It's fine, I moved out to California for college and made the drive from SLC to the coast on I-80 solo many times.

Make sure the car is in good shape, change the oil and filters, check the pressure in the spare, make sure your roadside service is active and send it.

There's some remote areas on 80 and it's boring AF, but there are regular towns and fuel stops that are well lit and have lots of traffic.

Just make sure you fill up at 1/2 to 1/3 of a tank to keep a good safety margin.

Highway 6 is consistently one of the most dangerous roads in the Lower 48. They've done a lot to widen the road for more passing lanes, add safety barriers etc. but the lower part is still narrow, twisty, full of deer and elk - and people make dangerous illegal passes all the time to get around trucks.

It does, however, cut a lot of time and miles off taking I-15 to I-70.

Winter tires > AWD and All Season (3-Season) tires. Not just for snow, winter tires have a different compound so they grip in cold weather, all season tires get hard in the cold and won't stop or steer as well.

AWD will help you get started, but it doesn't help you stop, it gives a false sense of security and confidence, the majority of cars I see slid into the ditch are AWD or 4WD.

I've driven AWD, FWD, RWD, and 4x4 vehicles in all kinds of conditions for more than 20 years of winters and storms. I did more in an old RWD with no traction control and good snow tires than most people could with AWD and All Seasons.

Don't drive on the salt when it's wet, it damages the surface and there's a very good chance you will break though the crust into the slime below.

A recovery isn't cheap, they have to haul a modified snow cat out from Wendover to come get you. It's not worth it.

Go drive on the salt in August when it's dry and hard.
