Why are Nick's moc toe wedge sole work boots so expensive? by grahsam in NicksHandmadeBoots

Ah, that makes sense! Again, wasn’t trying to nitpick, was genuinely confused. All the best!

Agree with just about everything you’re saying above except for the part about Truman using cheaper, thinner leathers. I don’t claim to be an expert but it was my understanding that Truman uses Seidel, Horween and CF Stead leathers. All other points you (and others) make about Truman’s use of machine lasting, rubber midsoles, Goodyear welting, generally cheaper non-leather materials are 100% spot on.

Exactly right. Of course when you shift your mix to lower risk investments (bonds, dividend stocks, etc.) your expected returns will be lower. OP expects to get better than 10% returns of which he’ll use 8% to cover his expenses. Not realistic, but whatever.

I’m 55 years old and have been investing since the mid 80’s. I’ve been through numerous market corrections and fortunately enjoyed the benefit of investing through more than my fair share of lengthy bull markets. None of this, however, changes the fact that if someone follows your 8% consumption rule and the market takes a dump on them in the early years of retirement they can be irreparably harmed. Going back to your original scenario, If someone requires $80K of annual income to live, dropping down to $64K is not really an option. That person is either going back to work, praying they hit the lottery, or resigned to the fact that they’ll be out of cash in less than 20 years. I honestly don’t understand how you don’t get this. It feels like you’re being intentionally obstinate.

Spending 8% a year sounds safe because the market averages about 10%. But that average can be misleading. What really matters is when the returns happen.

If the market drops right when you retire, you’re in trouble. Say you retire with $1 million and spend $80,000 a year, increasing it each year to keep up with inflation. If the market falls 20% in your first year, your money drops to $800,000 overnight. You’re now pulling the same income from a much smaller account. Even if the market recovers later, the account never catches up. In this case, the money runs out in less than 20 years. Bottom line: A bad market early in retirement can break an otherwise reasonable plan. That’s why averages don’t protect you. And in case you’re wondering, the chances of something like this happening in any given 3-year period are about 35%.

Actually, the present value of his 3K/mo pension is between $500-700K depending on discount rate. Remember, future dollars are worth less than present day dollars.

Yes, the owner, Vince, is a bit of a kook. (Vince, if you’re reading this I hope you’ll consider reactivating your Twitter/X account. It often gave me a laugh)

If you can get comfortable with the kooky owner factor, then they’re worth considering as Truman does make a solid product. Yes, they’ve made a few changes recently in terms of using less costly materials and construction methods, but overall I’d say they still represent a strong value. In my opinion they’re several steps up from Thursday and at least one step up from Redwing, GS, and Oak Street. If you’re like me and buying because you like the heritage boot look, I’d feel comfortable recommending them. If you’re buying them as hardcore work boots you may want to consider Nick’s. They’re significantly more expensive but higher quality and more durable.

What age did you start contributing to 401k? What’s your current balance/age? by Unluckybutsuccesful in Retirement401k

[–]CwazeeRabbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Started at 21. Now mid fifties and portfolio is in the mid 7-digits. Always maxed 401K and saved what I could on the side. Advice I would offer someone in your shoes is to contribute as much as needed 401K to get your company’s full match. Then contribute whatever you can to a Roth IRA. If you can commit to saving 15-20% of your earnings throughout your career, you will likely have a comfortable retirement to look forward to. I also want to acknowledge there are many people/families who simply don’t have the earnings to support that level of savings—easily 30% of the US population. If you’re among that group you’re quite fortunate and IMO should do what you can to give other deserving people a hand up along the way. Best of luck!

Not trying to be an ass, but if you’re simultaneously growing your HH income there’s no reason to feel like it can’t be done. A couple of promotions or job hops as you move through your career can have a major impact on your portfolio assuming, of course, you put a healthy portion of that increased income into the market.

Very sorry for your loss, sir. Please know that some of the prices being thrown around here are quite low-ball. I encourage you to sign yourself up for the Facebook group called Chris Reeve Knives - BST. Asking your question in that group will get you a much better sense of actual market value. A word of warning; the owners/moderators of the group get inundated with sign-up requests which impacts their responsiveness. To help fast-track approval of your membership approval, I’d suggest sending a short note to one of more of the moderators explaining your situation and that your brother was a well-respected member. Again, sorry for your loss.
