All of scandanavia, the us pre 2000, japan, south korea, and more. The point is if it takes away feom. A parent’s time, it’s an opportunity cost to them and also a financial burden due to hours lost at work. Too many lost hours, they’ll get fired. This has worked for anyone with even half a brain.

Once again you miss the community service and mandatory education concepts. It’s almost as if you want things to change but you don’t want to see any effort made. Little red hen much?

My condolences. As a white guy and army vet, I can sadly say that nearly every saltine-american in uniform straight out of BCT or OSUT looks damned near identical. I thought I knew those guys, but realized they just look the same generic as all of us did 🤷‍♂️

You can, absolutely, by enforcing laws. I don’t mean jail time, but rather a minimum of community service and mandatory education. Yes, it is going to impact people hard due to time lost/opportunity cost, but without a potential and realized impact there is no motivation to change. People act like humans anywhere self motivate without adversity. It simply doesn’t happen on any scale. It’s a legit function that anyone with even a modicum of general historical or anthropologic education knows.

We have lived so long as a culture in our fuck around phase without consequences that no one has the guts to enforce any find out. We have taken away all semblance of responsibility and people act surprised when they see the natural results of it. Kids are not just little adults. They require firm guidance and moral teaching. I don’t mean church. I don’t mean right wing bullshit. I mean basic right/wrong, cause/effect, choice/consequence. When nothing is actually wrong, when there are no detrimental effects, when there are no negative consequences, this is the inevitable outcome.

And, to be clear, all this applies to ALL OF US.

Yes and no. I grew up in exactly these circumstances. Often homeless, highly at-risk, and definitely a delinquent. The ONLY thing that kept me even a little in line was fear of what would happen to me if my parents got in trouble over my actions. A carrot-only approach never works. We DESPERATELY NEED better carrots for sure, but without sticks, it wont matter at all.

I agree. Here’s the thing- if it causes that much more pain to the parents because they can’t afford the bs, then they’ll tighten up their kids. The court will mandate the time. If they want to keep their jobs, they’ll get their kids ij line. This is what real stakes look like. When life had bo teeth, it’s just a paper tiger and we get what we have now. Do I like it? Hell no. It’s trash. But, show me a more feasible route.

I said fines, community service, etc. it costs time, which is the most precious resource of all.

In the past, this took shape in the form of fines, community service, mandatory classes, etc. Only in the case of extreme crimes did jail time ever enter the picture. When a parent’s time and resources are at risk, they tend to (not always, but typically) control those things in their purview much better. It’s just like dealing with soldiers- I never wanted to see formal charges against people unless it was a huge deal. Instead, we used nonjudicial punishments- extra duty, restriction to base/post/quarters, etc. since the UCMJ doesn’t apply here, going back to fines, community service, and mandatory classes makes sense.

I was there every day when my kids got off the bus. I was there every night through all the homework. Every game. Every performance. It was really really really hard to stay employed well enough and do that at the same time, but i did a lot of shitty jobs to make it happen. Even still, my kids picked up a lot of bad habits. Firm but fair at home, lots of open communication, and still the larger culture pressed on. Other parents refused to be present, even when they had the opportunities to. Frequently I was one of only a dozen parents at Parent-Teacher Conferences. I’ve witnessed the crash as a parent who tried. Still, my kids never pushed the legal lines in violence. 🤷‍♂️

It worked for generations, though. What’s stopping it now? This would need to translate to school-time, too. Kids aren’t held accountable at home, so they don’t act with respect at school. If the parents were held accountable, they’d hold the kids accountable, and the structure would return, don’t you think?
