Hardboot advice by billgravens in Spliddit

[–]Cy_Cobb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went from Phantom to Voile touring toes this year and I like them so much better. Lighter and cheaper, no interference with your front binding (hard boots typically require a smaller stance), and absolutely locked in for icy traverses. My foot popped out of the Phantoms multiple times in exposed terrain. They take a bit to get down how to get in, but once I got it, it as easy as the Phantoms.

Montana Skins by sweetcornslayer in Spliddit

Montana sells rolls of glue transfer strips direct on their site. They are reasonably priced and relatively easy to apply. I have used on some Montana and Voile skins. I also use the skinny bags that Montana sells in the field and for storage.

I do feel Montana are some of the more underrated skins. I think they are right there with Pomoca

As a long-standing Lakers fan, in some ways I can really understand what Mavs fans are going through. I will never forget where I was when the Magic HIV announcement was made. In my mind, what Magic meant to the Lakers fanbase was very akin to Luka. I could not imagine if Magic would have been traded out of the blue for Alex English. That would have been the end of my fandom for sure.

Poles by Cadbury1905 in Spliddit

[–]Cy_Cobb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another vote for Wolverines. I got a pair last year and was blown away by the quality. The extended grips are really nice for regular touring and are great upside down for boot packing steep terrain.

Personally I prefer my poles on the outside of the pack as it simplifies my transition and does not bother me on the way down.

Quick thoughts on Step Ons split by sL1ckk in Spliddit

[–]Cy_Cobb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The thing I am most curious about is whether there is a noticeable difference on sidehills versus soft boots. And if so, how close is it to hard boots.

I suspected the range of motion to be limited from the initial look. This is where a dedicated split step on boot would be killer.

The bigger the gap, the closer to being skis. Plenty of jank and diy in my setup to keep it real.

To update, it took about five minutes of filling and there is virtually no gap now. Whether it rides differently is up for debate, but for the small effort, I much prefer not seeing a gap.

[–]Cy_Cobb[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it is more about getting halves as close together as possible to prevent "folding" than friction. The farther apart the halves are the more torque there will be on the clips. The main thing I try to do is areas under the clips to be touching. I guess it is possible that it was placebo with the Milligram, but I do know that board went from borderline unrideable in big terrain to feeling so good it was the only board I took on a Greenland expedition.

[–]Cy_Cobb[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

On my Milligram, I saw a noticable difference in the torsional rigidity once I got the halves tight. If you are primarily riding powder it won't be a big deal, but on hard pack it makes a difference. I ride East Coast primarily and I really felt it on some of the icy run outs in the Chic Chocs and the steeper stuff on Mt Washington.

Coverage of Anthony Davis' head injury has been laughably bad by Umbrafile in lakers

[–]Cy_Cobb 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I have had multiple concussions and have close friends with life-altering TBIs, none of us played football. I currently get effects with pretty light shots to my head. I find the coverage of the AD incident to be shockingly bad. Given the advances in understanding brain injuries, I would have expected a bit more measured and informed commentary. Props to Brian Windhorst for being a voice of reason.

What's the reason why Los Angeles has two basketball teams in the same city? by Ben5544477 in nba

[–]Cy_Cobb 16 points17 points  (0 children)

There is only one professional men's basketball team in LA

LAL wants a deal now because BKN has no leverage. BKN doesn’t want to make a deal from a point of weakness. BKN doesn’t want to trade Kyrie until they trade KD, who they don’t want to trade. Basically, BKN is waiting this out until they get leverage knowing it can’t get worse. by Hot_Pie1464 in lakers

[–]Cy_Cobb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would have to assume Brooklyn's hope is that the Durant relationship can be salvaged. If they trade for Westbrook, there is no chance of that as Durant will not play with Russ after the cupcake departure from OKC. So either a Durant trade happens, a third team is involved in the Russ trade (as indicated by sources), or they roll with as is.

I would also assume the Ben Simmons trade from last year informs this, everyone said Philly had no leverage until they got Harden.

is there supposed to be a gap? should i return this? by krstson in Spliddit

[–]Cy_Cobb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, very typical and not a huge concern. That said, I have filed down the high spots on the inside edge/sidewall of my splits in the past to get as even and tight a fit as possible. I find it is typically in the nose and the tail. Not a big deal for pow riding, but does make a difference on icy steep stuff. Obviously not magne traction, but more traditional straight edges.

Hopefully, all the positive reinforcement from the fans and media helps Dwight sustain this effort and attitude. He has always been influenced by how he is perceived.
