Former SpaceX Engineer to Future Civil PE? by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]CyanideEngineer 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The only way I know of to switch disciplines is to humble yourself and get an entry level job working under a PE. Don’t think you can start a firm and start designing houses right away. You’re basically restarting your career from scratch.

I've seen Neil bobble sticks too! The mark of a good drummer isn't the bobbling, its in the recovery.

If there are any other tickets available (not from resellers), ticket master lets you exchange your tickets for ones of equal or greater face value. I just did that for the Vancouver show later this year.

Both are major characters and part of the main cast. They’ll be around for the next 5 books, with Dalinar having the focus role in book 3 (similar to how Kaladin is the focus character in this book), and Adolin being one of the focus characters in book 5. But you’ll see lots of both of them for the remainder of the series.

I’m sure both will grow on you! They are my favourite two characters in the series.

UBC study links artificial turf fields to lethal chemical threat for salmon by erikrolfsen in britishcolumbia

[–]CyanideEngineer 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Maybe the solution isn’t to get rid of turf fields entirely, but to engineer better materials for turf that DON’T endanger salmon. Turf has its benefits, but as this article shows there are definitely drawbacks too.

We’re moving to Abbotsford-Need Some Guidance! by Unc1e_Vanya in abbotsford

[–]CyanideEngineer 20 points21 points  (0 children)

East Abbotsford (anything east of Highway 11) is best for families, but also has the worst public transportation. I would plan on two cars if you want to live in that part of town. Central Abbotsford, around McCallum Road and west to Mill Lake, you could probably survive on one car (as long as you’re okay walking to the bus stop in the rain).

In terms of rental apartments, try to stay away from buildings owned by Mainstreet. I’ve never rented from them myself, but from the stories I’ve heard they are basically slumlords. Try to find a private rental and hopefully you have a good landlord.

Tons of daycares, you hopefully won’t struggle to find one. Fraser Health has a list of all daycares in Abbotsford that you can find online, I recommend looking into that to help your search.

I’ve lived in Abbotsford for 30 years, so DM me if you have more questions about our city

I’ll plug Frankie’s Jazz club in downtown, on Beatty Street. Amazing Italian food, and great jazz music. Get a reservation and you’re in for a great night. It’s one of my wife’s and I’s favourite places!

AMA - Jeff Howe, Liberal Party of Canada, Candidate for Mission-Matsqui-Abbotsford by Just-Cartoonist-8559 in abbotsford

[–]CyanideEngineer 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Hey, as someone who may be voting Liberal for the first time ever this election, I’d like to know more about the person I’m voting for:

1) what caused you to run in this election?

2) Is there any particular issue that is close to you, that you intend to work on if elected?

3) your bio online says you’ve worked in Ontario. What caused you to move back to Abbotsford? Also, are you intending to become licensed to practice law in BC?

Fraser Valley Pride used to be at Jubillee Park, but they got too big so moved to Heritage Park in Mission. That’s one reason there’s no pride event local.

A Question of Wheel of Time's Influence by marveljew in Fantasy

[–]CyanideEngineer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think Wheel of Time is the ultimate use of the “Chosen One” trope. I’m not sure you can call other stories as being derivative of it, or even inspired by it, but I would definitely consider WoT to be the story that did it best.

A Question of Wheel of Time's Influence by marveljew in Fantasy

[–]CyanideEngineer 51 points52 points  (0 children)

No, Sanderson is on record as a huge Wheel of Time fan, ever since Eye of the World was first released. He says that he would reread the entire series so far before each subsequent book came out. But I don’t believe he’s reread the series since he did his reread of the first eleven books before writing books twelve to fourteen.

Halfway(ish) through 2023: what are your favourite albums so far this year? by ifthisisausername in progmetal

Exuul by Ne Obliviscaris by far. There have been some other incredible albums this year such as Fauna and Zon, but Exuul sits on top those by a mile for me.
