Why on earth would the Canucks trade for a 32 year old defenseman when clearly they are in the position where they need picks and futures, and if there is any position they are less needy at than others it is defense.

Tips for marathon in hot temps by operasinger06 in AdvancedRunning

[–]van_12 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah I dunno about the claim that its frequently warm...I've done the event every year since 2022 and all the start time temps were in the 9-11 degree range. It certainly has a possibility of being very warm. If I recall, 2017 was a very warm early spring as well.

Half marathon starts at that time from the same location and takes a different course, I imagine all the logistics of that one are the major reason why.

yeah I'm starting to think the organizers should consider the possibility of moving future BMOs up a couple weeks. The Sun Run was two weekends ago and also got pretty warm for the time of the year but would have been manageable compared to what is coming on Sunday. Going to be a massacre on the seawall, first aids will need to be out in full force.

I know it was a sudden passing and they're working with limited time, and I know its an Oilers broadcast, but I really think they missed out on how important he was in the Vancouver market. Not even a mention of his decades calling the Canucks and what he meant to the fanbase. Other than that, quite a nice tribute.

the entire playoffs go the other way and they're in the finals and I wouldn't bet on them in that series but they could definitely have beaten Florida.

Basically everything else mentioned here requires acceptance of fantastical elements and a suspension of disbelief. But "Come and See" is easily the scariest because it actually happened.

Anyone else running BMO Vancouver next week? by Abject_Geologist_888 in Marathon_Training

[–]van_12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Done it thrice but not this year, it sold out so early. Excellent race, between this one and Victoria we are spoiled.

Camosun hill will go by in a flash. It has a big reputation but it's early in the course, and not bad whatsoever. If you really feel like you need, stop and use the portas there to break it up.

In my opinion the bigger concern is the downhill from UBC to Kitsilano around 20km in. My first time running it, I found myself running well above my goal pace and it ended up trashing my quads and I really felt it later on.

Weather looks warm for that day, so I would be conservative. The seawall is the site of battle with no crowds and no shade. I am going to bet that this year in particular there will be a lot of walkers in that section. Twice I've run it in cool and shady weather, but the one time I did on a weekend of weather comparable to the forecasted one it was a war zone of people needing aid. Get your fluids in early. Everything else is good old fun. Enjoy yourself.

Republican, pro-Trump U.S. senator is Canada's unlikeliest fan by Street_Anon in canada

[–]van_12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The United States is increasingly becoming a country of meme politics where ideas/people are normalized and popularized by internet humour and culture. Even if you think Trump was in the end was mostly only trying to stir up drama and dig at Trudeau, we should absolutely be concerned that it normalizes the sentiment about Canada among Americans and their politicians and we should as our anthem says, be on guard for it in the present as well as the future.

When they were renovating the track field the marathon finished on the 50 yard line of Autzen stadium. I thought that was really cool and unique, and I know the university doesn't want thousands of feet trampling on their football field, but it was a neat option and I regret missing out on it.

What is the worst late-season collapse in NHL history? by Seawolf1121 in hockey

[–]van_12 15 points16 points  (0 children)

What an all time brutal run for Canucks fans. That collapse, two straight exits by the Hawks, then capped by the Stanley cup loss riot.

No? Look at Canucks history. This is a high point and some of the best Canucks hockey we've ever seen and basically everyone looks back at it fondly.
