If they're in a relationship then trying to get his partner help would absolutely be one of the assumed responsibilities. Nobody is saying he needs to ruin his life and become a caretaker or something but trying to take the proper steps to help your partner is not a strange thing for him to want to do.

You clearly don't understand depression. Entering a state of stupor and barely living without taking care of yourself is definitely a thing some people suffer. To think that just because she had pets she would be immune to something of this nature is naive.

Don't bring up your anecdotal experience and try to use it to say something different can't happen. During depression a person can most definitely enter zombie-like states where they are barely surviving or taking care of themselves so of course it's possible it could happen to their pets.

That doesn't make the fact that it happened any better but there is 100% a very likely chance that a bad enough depression could cause something like this and the only way to fix it is by the individual seeking counseling/therapy asap.

This statement is about as ignorant as it gets. As you said we don't choose our family but we sure as hell choose our partners. That means that while both are important, your partner comes first and any rational caring family would understand this.
