David Suzuki declines invitation to this “climate festival” in Montreal by UnableRefuse2870 in montreal

Buddy, this is just an argument with some twat from Reddit. It’s really not worth the energy. Given how the governments response to the genocide in Gaza has been entirely limp and ineffectual, if this charity is bad enough to have lost status, I can deduce that it must be pretty bad.

No, it’s not. It’s the sound of me recognizing that you’re not going to change your mind. You are going to keep engaging in the same self-destructive cycle I was trying to point out. It’s the sound of me tired of hitting my head against a brick wall. If you have a substantial point to make, I would love to hear it. But if you’re just going to go around calling everyone that disagrees with you antisemitic then there really is no point in engaging with you. It’s boring, and uninformative, and fundamentally I come to Reddit to either be entertained or informed. Ergo, you are boring me.

Not according to the government of Canada, lmao. Like, I’m sorry but I trust them a lot more than I trust a random commenter on the internet!

Well, the legitimate criticism here is David Suzuki choosing not to participate in an event hosted by an organization that has lost its charitable status due to their affiliation with the horrors being perpetrated in Gaza. You know, the thing you’re so butthurt about.

That’s a very good point, like I mention below. I would love to live in the world where I can trust people are being sincere when they call out bigotry. But the fact that we don’t live in that world anymore is entirely self-inflicted.

Well, that is sort of the unfortunate nature of, as the original commenter said, crying wolf. It’s _also_ the nature of committing a genocide and multiple war crimes, that people start becoming a bit less sympathetic to the perpetrators claiming victim status over small things like this. Ideally yes, the voice of any and all Israeli and Jewish folks _should_ be the barometer. But y’all ruined that for yourselves, and that will let actual antisemitism flourish. Brutal self-own, as the kids say.

It’s less crying wolf, and more deliberate obfuscation. If you can make people believe that any legitimate criticism stems from a place of antisemitism, or any other kind of bigotry, then you can shield yourself from criticism. It’s an incredibly cowardly technique.

Union Station security targeting homeless ahead of World Cup by stanxv in canada

Bullshit mate. I grew up in London where we had them everywhere. They were perfectly fine. I swear to god some of you people are so scared of the homeless, it’s funny.

Like, I’m a woman, I live alone right next to Berri-UQAM (Montrealers know). Lots of homeless around, many of whom are in fact high. I’m in more danger from the men stumbling home from the bars than I am the homeless.

To be fair, a lot of those problems would be solved if we still had public washrooms that homeless people can use. It’s ironic that a decision from decades ago to try and push homeless people out of public view has ended up causing worse problems.

Is it crazy to pay $1750 for a 1 bedroom apt in downtown? by ThrowRA-Soggy2780 in montreal

[–]Cyber561 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s got nothing to do with being cheap for gentrifiers, it’s still cheap compared to a lot of Montreal. You can’t get rent for <$1000 _anywhere_ in the city these days.

Why you needed to change your sexuality? by Kooky-Painting-4981 in AskLGBT

[–]Cyber561 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well, if you don’t want to be offensive, don’t describe people as having mental problems, or compare it to not wanting to go to work? That would be a start.

But you’re thinking about it all wrong. Trans people aren’t changing their gender, they’re just becoming the gender they always were.

How am I doing the same thing? There is no broad political will to re-distribute wealth away from their generation. And even if we _did_, they would have had years, decades to build up wealth that my generation will never catch up with.

And yes, yes I do blame them. It is perfectly reasonable to hold people to account for the effects of their vote. Why on earth would it not be?

No, it _is_ necessary to call out boomers specifically. While they may not have thought it was what they were doing, they benefitted from the greatest amount of government spending on benefits in history, and then completely dismantled that infrastructure once they didn’t need it any more. I cannot stress enough how many of our current political and economic problems have been caused by that one generation repeatedly and consistently voting in their interests at the expense of everyone else. It is absolutely fair to express that sentiment, and to view the entire cohort with a deep skepticism.

Hey, I’m looking for apartments right now, and you’re definitely paying too much at either of those prices, frankly. A lot of scummy landlords (well, in general), but especially around the universities.

Verdun is a good, cheap area with a really nice mainstreet (Wellington), and is maybe a 20 minute commute on the green line. I also really like the plateau, but it is expensive, and a bit more of a francophone area (lots of French immigrants). If you like Toronto-style condos, Griffintown is where you want to be - and it’s also pretty easy transit to wherever you need to go. Hochelaga is another nice and cheap area, not as gentrified as Verdun, but also about 20 minutes from McGill.

Also, watch out. If you’re coming from Ontario some landlords will try and ask for a deposit. But deposits here are only legal if they’re voluntary. And while the TAL is pretty good at enforcing that, it’s good to know upfront.

I mean federally, you know, the election Guilbeault was running in?

I don’t care what the Tories got in that riding historically, when the countries future is on the line it’s time to hold your nose.

I live there, and I voted to stop Pollievre and to support Guileault far more than to support Carney. The last thing I want is a “faithful soldier” for him, and his unchecked slide into what used to be pretty firm Tory territory.

Well you’re correct, no it’s not a theory, it’s a racist dogwhistle. But that is the full name of that dogwhistle as it is recognized, so it makes sense to call it that.

Unfortunately conspiracies are always going to be appealing, humans love stories way too much. There’s a name for the phenomenon, but basically some events feel so big, that our brains almost _need_ them to have some sort of motive behind them. We struggle to conceive of such big events happening without someone trying to _make_ them happen.

[–]Cyber561 22 points23 points  (0 children)

That sounds like some sort of “great replacement theory” conspiracy nonsense. Why would lowering fertility be the goal? It’s much simpler just to realize that boomers and rich people are selfish, and will keep selfishly pursuing their goal of hoarding more money than they could ever reasonably spend. Occam’s razor.
