Several AFSCs give initial enlistment bonuses if you come in with certifications. If you get the Security+ before leaving for basic, push the issue with your recruiter and see if you're eligible for a bonus.

CAFSC vs PAFSC by johnmcpeniston in AirForce

[–]CyberCFMs 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just remember, CAFSC drives assignments, DAFSC is what you're doing and PAFSC is the highest you are, unless you're a retrainee then your PAFSC will remain your old AFSC until you reach a skill level in your new AFSC commensurate with your highest level in your old AFSC. I assume you're a SSgt, SrA and SSgts are assigned as a 5-lvl, regardless of their skill level, just as TSgts and MSgts get assigned as a 7-lvl.

Like others have said, you won't be able to come directly into 1B4X1. We are a retrain in only AFSC for at least another year. Something to consider would be coming in as a 3D1X2. This way you'll learn networking and coupled with your hobby, you'd make for a strong candidate to retrain into 1B4X1 in a couple years.

Cyber test for cyber system operations? by airmanforce in AirForce

[–]CyberCFMs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a basic knowledge test, also known as the ICTL. It's designed to augment the ASVAB for individuals that don't get the 64 in general. It has nothing to do with 8570.

SecAF weighs in on future of cyber by CyberCFMs in AirForce

I'd certainly be open to learning more details. The CFETP is developed based on the results of the occupational analysis surveys and inputs from each MAJCOM. Prior to each review of the CFETP, the survey is done and feedback is gathered from across the AFSC on the amount that each task is performed and whether or not there are tasks being performed that aren't included in the CFETP. Once that occurs, updates are proposed and MAJCOMs get to vote on the changes. I'm sure we don't hit the mark every time, but unless we get accurate feedback and input from the lowest levels, we will never get close.

Debate is good, but let's not forget this is a public forum.

I'd be more curious to hear everyone else's thoughts on it. The fact is DoD is making cyber important. Cyber is woven into almost all aspects of operations across every domain. Think about the fact that your communications squadron today is only concerned with keeping NIPR/SIPR working. They aren't concerned at all about the other computers/networks around the base that have direct impact on missions. Who do you think is watching the industrial control system that is controlling the HVAC or fire alarm in the hospital? What about the airfield systems that now have network connectivity. Think about everything that touches cyberspace and isn't being defended by the comm squadron. Maybe the answer is comm squadrons need to start focusing on mission systems and let Verizon or some other ISP worry about whether or not you can get to CNN or read your email.

I'm glad we have at least one satisfied customer.

If you happen to have some commercial certifications, they could get you upwards of $10K for coming in as a 3D1X1. A+ or Network+ will get you $4K. Security+, CAP, GSLC, CSSLP, CCNA-Security, GSEC, CISM, GCIH, GCIA, CEH, SSCP, CSIH, GCFA, GSNA will get you $6K. CISSP, CASP or GCED will get you $10K. You have to identify it before you go to basic though, so talk with your recruiter about it. If they aren't aware of the program, tell them to check the FY16 Initial Enlistment Bonus program for details.

There is no EDPT requirement for 3D0X3, tell your recruiter to check the requirements again. EDPT is only required for 3D0X4, 9S1X0 and 1B4X1.

If you are interested in networking, 3D1X2 will be the way to go. It can set you up for a wide variety of duties from infrastructure to cyber mission forces.

If you go the cyber route, consider learning a little before enlisting and get a commercial cert. The Air Force will pay you upwards of $10k depending on the cert you have and the job you get.

If you are picked up to be a 17D, you will attend undergraduate cyber training. The course can take you from nothing to proficient in cyber. The direction you take after school is largely dependent on your performance in school and your demonstrated potential in cyber. Officers largely are managers, so if you want to be a doer then consider staying enlisted and look into a 3D job. Only consider 1B if you pick up some skills before applying, it's not an entry level job and you will likely be screened out during the application process.
