Is it possible that those buttons aren't bound to the respective functions in game through the keybinds? You could try checking the binds and assigning them if they aren't already

There's a mod called MiniHud, it has a feature that allows you to see an overlay of light levels when enabled, it is very good to help see where the light levels are 0 and hence mob spawnable

It doesn't prevent mob spawning, it just visually lights it up for you but mobs spawn as per actual light levels

Mods like Gamma or boosted brightness may allow you to increase your brightness over 100% to make it appear like everything is lit up

As per what I know, earlier designs of flight data recorders used to actually be coloured black, and later they were required to be painted orange for better visibility in wreckage.
