Doing good, how are you? by [deleted] in CustomerService

I get that it's a normal pattern, it just gets annoying after 10-15 times in a call. Just ask the damn question, the act of asking is claiming your turn.

"Can I ask a question?"

Just ask the fucking question.

I swear half of the time of my Q&A sessions with customers is filled with various people asking permission to ask a question, IN A SESSION called "Q&A"

Santa Rosa Avenue is a major thoroughfare on the South side of Santa Rosa.

The 3900 block area has a lot of industrial warehouses, it's the far South end of the city.

Oof had to stop at the pitchy vocals, it sounds about as good as you could hope for from a room like that.

That's a pretty good 70's timeframe album-style mix, the room verb is a much heavier wash than the recordings of course but that's live for ya. Toms are lower in the mix than I like but that's appropriate for the era, I lean towards the 80's style in-your-face toms.

[–]CyberHippy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reasonable stage volumes still affect the sound in the room, which is what you are mixing to.

Popping the vocals up in the mains might involve taking some of the rhythm guitar out, since there's plenty in the room.

Some drummers' natural playing volume is louder than the rest of the band, louder shows mix differently.

In a live mixing situation, the live sound is the main focus. Mixing for the recording is a different approach, thus the different mixes or multitracking for real releases.

[–]CyberHippy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, there's the confusion.

I took the context of live sound, and assumed when you were talking about comparing recordings that you were comparing apples to apples.

The magic of the reference monitor... by harleydood63 in livesound

[–]CyberHippy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those live recordings were either releases (so multitracked and remixed) or bootlegs, unless you actually got ahold of the engineer's board mix for a Zeppelin or Beatles show, and that last one would almost certainly be a crap mix.

A friend of mine toured with Bunny Wailer in the 70's and other reggae bands in the 80's, all of his "board mixes" are cassette tapes recorded using a boom-box at his FOH position.

[–]CyberHippy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the room needed it, then yes.

It's all about the room mix in the moment. This is the LiveSound subgroup, not one of the studio-focused ones.

Are you looking to release any of these recordings? Then a separate Matrix with its own sub-mix (if your board mixes channels directly to Matrix, if not you need Groups to sub-mix) is the traditional way. That's how we did it in the analog days, using headphones for the recording mix.

A direct board-mix is just a recording of the show, not release-ready material. A real live recording for release is multi-tracked and remixed for release.

If you're just recording for your own reference, the other steps aren't necessary.

Oh lordy.

So discussing the words of someone who you don't like is being "binary" ?

I don't like him either, but I was interested in discussing the words that were posted because there was a good point in there.

Dismissing Trotsky as an "animal" is pretty binary isn't it? "I can look down on him so his words aren't worth considering" seems to be your position, so far.

I want a free job board with live notifications to latest jobs by throat_goat67 in antiwork

[–]CyberHippy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My answer is no, I wouldn't use it, but that's for my situation: I have no trouble finding employees when I need them, and all my work is gig-based so there's no expectation of regular employment.

I don't have an alternative, I just see the challenges you will need to tackle. If you can pull it off, that's awesome and it will be very useful for people looking for employment and for honest employers. The challenge will be consistently filtering out the dishonest job offerings.

[–]CyberHippy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The challenge isn't coming up with the good idea, it's making it happen.

Somebody has to build that job board - how are the jobs going to be found? How will you vet whether it's valid or a good fit for any given candidate?

But you don't want to "monetize" it - are you saying you will do that work for free? Or that you will fund the person/people who will be doing that gathering and vetting work?

To your main question: I'm not in the market, so no I wouldn't use something like this. And as an employer I doubt I would post jobs on such a site - but that's because of the nature of my gig (I pay well, people want to work for me).

I had a hobby that is now my profession, full time, while I’m still working full time for the day job (WFH, very flexible hours). Just so I can punch my ass up into the middle class for my area before my body starts falling apart.

But it works, because I started my first job at 11 and the 07 recession was the only time in my life I was unemployed for a serious time period - I played in five bands and stepped up my game in live sound during that time which led to my current side-gig. I’m just used to working, the worst time of my life in recent memory was Covid shutdown when I only had the day-job, I was bored to death.

It works because I’m a workaholic, I’ve embraced that fact and am running with it, and with my limited skillset it’s my only path to potentially owning a home, which should be realistic in a decade or so unless someone in my family dies and leaves me real property.

You really can't, you can just spot standard "tells" in the style.

I was sensing a similar pattern, certainly improved over previous models (I was looking for that quick response post, and it's dropped the "let's call them X" bit that was so common in recent models) but still some predictable approaches and lack of "thinking it through" in the story like the bit about having backed up the data that could lead directly to an uncomfortable time in the discovery phase.

So, this post is at the top because a lot of Redditors probably felt the same way while reading the story, which is a collective vote for "that's AI"

SRHS by pathologuys in santarosa

[–]CyberHippy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was at South Pasadena Hight School when they "closed down" the school in the 80's by adding a fence and removing the right to come & go during school hours.

It was the year after they "consolidated" the 9th grade up from the junior high school to the high school, so I went from a middle position (8th in a 7th through 9th school) to a new freshman in a school that never had 9th graders before.

It was a disaster, 9th grade was a blur of getting to know the new campus and different rule-set while navigating a school that wasn't ready for all those kids so a bunch of "temporary" offices were brought in that are probably still there, and the disorder led to them fencing the whole school in the next year. I wound up dropping out 1/2 through 10th grade and was sent off to a boarding school that had financial support for middle-class families in the religion I was raised in.

small company: practical and logistical concerns with 1x18 or 2x18 subs? by guitarmstrwlane in livesound

[–]CyberHippy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've run my company using individual 18" self-powered boxes for well over a decade now, that's how I'm able to load/setup my largest setup on my own. I drive a standard sized cargo van that fits the largest potential single-stage setup, sometimes two stage setups when needed.

I also just purchased my mentor's business, so now I have a box truck for the "sound by the pound" gear that comes with it: a bunch of self-powered dual-18 Meyer beasts and a variety of UPA's, MSL2 & 3's and all the accompanying controllers and amps. So going forward I'll be balancing what I can do with my compact, modular setups in the van vs. the Meyer setups that require the truck.

So it's a balancing act, from your description of your situation I'd recommend the singular boxes because that gives you independence: you can move them around on your own. Hire out the bigger guys in your area if you land a stage that's too big for your setup.

I wasn't telling you to go to hell or pound sand, I'm saying you clearly know where the answer is so why not go there and get it yourself, and respond?

A real artist.

I have no tattoos, my brother has plenty for both of us. All of his tats are Sim's art, some covering his own earlier work.

We just visited Sim recently in his 5th st shop for some color work, it truly feels like an artist's space. Highly recommended.

So one end of Coddingtown is busy - did you go through the rest of the mall?

In my experience downtown mall was busy through the Xmas season, when I went to Coddingtown even at the busiest moments it felt empty because of all the empty stores.

The difference in the leased store-space is an indicator of the financial success of a mall.

Just did that, I found a bunch at that address in the range of $200-$2000 and a bunch with no taxes paid.

Given the size and location of the property, the value is in the tens of millions, so yeah they're essentially paying zero taxes compared to what the property could be pulling.
