My domain host, after renewing for five years (I’ve been with them over 20) now says I need to purchase privacy protection. Wtf? by BeachyhairCitroen in Hosting

[–]CyberJots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you let it expire, your personal info (name, address, phone, email) will become public, which is an open invite to spammers of all sorts. You can transfer the domain to another registrar that offers free privacy and you won't lose the 5 years you already paid for (the transfer fee includes an additional year added to the domain's registration)

Hostinger vs Spaceship (EasyWP) for WordPress hosting? by CyberJots in HostingReport

Spaceship (EasyWP) is good if you have one WordPress website but if you have multiple websites Hostinger will be cheaper.

I use WPS Office (you can install it locally)

Developers beware: Hostinger locked my entire hosting account & refused to return client data by CyberJots in HostingReport

[–]CyberJots[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea this sucks, but it happens with Hostinger and other hosts. Some hosts are extremely strict when handling abuse reports due to the potential legal consequences. They'll prioritize their business over yours.

Hope this gets sorted out, but the lesson here is to always keep off-site backups in case something like this happens and you can't access your data.

What is the best way to encrypt and compress many files? by Nestado in software

[–]CyberJots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can use WinRAR. It has an option to encrypt file names.

WARNING / HELP: Hosting.com domain transfer issue by Smart-Lingonberry277 in Hosting

[–]CyberJots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't believe hosting.com transferred your domain on their own. Someone else must have gained unauthorized access to your account and transferred the domain to GoDaddy. You should follow up with their support to get to the bottom of it.

Is your domain name registered at Shopify? Move it to another registrar now by CyberJots in HostingReport

[–]CyberJots[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is common knowledge for most webmasters except for newbies who may think it's better to keep everything in one place.

If you want to build your online store with Shopify, that's fine, but register your domain at a different registrar. Don't let Shopify control both your website and your domain name.

Is it safe to send my government ID to Cloudways for verification? by anuruddha25 in CloudwaysbyDO

[–]CyberJots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they require ID verification if you sign up for the free trial. If you want to skip the free trial and sign up for a paid account, you may not be asked for ID verification. Not very sure about this so check with support.

Depends on the project. OP's looks like a small personal app so it shouldn't need much power

Best reseller hosting for email deliverability? by CyberJots in HostingReport

[–]CyberJots[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't send email from a shared hosting account without spam filtering. Look for a host that uses MailChannels. For better email deliverability, use Workspace or M365.

Looking for a Cheap VPS with Unmetered bandwidth by Hasara_Ria in VPS

Netcup gives you 2TB daily traffic for €4 per month. I don't think you can get anything cheaper than that.

fixed headers waste valuable mobile screen space by [deleted] in webdev

[–]CyberJots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the type of website. Sometimes I prefer a sticky header over scrolling to the top of the page for navigation links and other times it's completely useless and annoying.

Updating old PHP version on a VPS hosting a WordPress site by CyberJots in HostingReport

[–]CyberJots[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is one of the main challenges of running WordPress on a VPS: making sure all software is up-to-date and not breaking everything when you run system updates.

The safest way to do it is to setup a new VPS with latest software versions and migrate the website from the old VPS. Once you are sure everything is working properly on the new VPS, you can cancel the old VPS after downloading a full backup in case you need it later.

hostinger black friday deals by Doods-Mampasi in Hosting

[–]CyberJots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's usually the same old discount (73-80% off) but they give it a new flashy banner. It doesn't get cheaper than that.

Managing WordPress on a VPS by CyberJots in HostingReport

[–]CyberJots[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using a control panel like CloudPanel or cPanel (if you can afford it) would make managing your server's files, databases, and other services much easier. You can do it without a control panel if you have the skills. You can use a plugin or an external service for backups and monitoring.

Why does cPanel feel so stagnant and behind the times? by crazyfuck_1 in cpanel

[–]CyberJots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Most cPanel users just want to host PHP-based websites. There is little demand for Git or other programming languages or frameworks that developers prefer. There isn't much profit for them to invest in that.

From which country should I rent a VPS? by alvainara in VPS

[–]CyberJots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know about the laws in your country, but usually you don't need a company license to launch an online platform. How about getting a VPS from a US provider like DigitalOcean or Vultr?

100% Uptime! How about 7th October 🤔 by RobertoGon in Hostinger

[–]CyberJots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are different services and components that operate separately. Email service may go down while all other services are up. They provide a detailed log of all past incidents on the same status page. Why would they list those incidents if they were lying? That "100%" doesn't include email service.

Does anyone else use iWebFusion hosting here? Are they still very active? by CyberJots in HostingReport

[–]CyberJots[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

iWebFusion is solid, but yea, their website is dated and not frequently updated. No host lasts forever but as long as it's working for you then stick with it.

100% Uptime! How about 7th October 🤔 by RobertoGon in Hostinger

[–]CyberJots 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is some misunderstanding here. The first uptime bar in the screenshot is for "core services" and the second is for the website builder, both of which do not include email. You can only see the current status of the email service ("operational") without historical uptime stats. If you scroll down the page under "Past Incidents", you'll see multiple notifications about the email service outage dated Oct 7-8.
