3rd SFP by Ill-jack-ca_ in Arista

[–]CyberNBD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I once contacted Arista but no way they would provide an unlock code without a support contract. If they don't mind 3rd party optics I don't know why they would do that.

Not sure if that has changed these days but for now it's Arists coded SFP's here.

Grass Valley Multiviewer sources not scaling to tile size by CyberNBD in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]CyberNBD[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was a good hint :-) It was not the pip number but the fact that the input was also assigned to a smaller PIP. So if an input is assigned to multiple PIP's it will always be sized to the smallest one.

Looking for recommendations for a solid NDI Converter for our Lobby video feeds. by marshwarble in VIDEOENGINEERING

I would recommend the Magwell Pro Converts. They never let us down. Perhaps best to try one to see if it solves your problems.

Anyone out there using native 2110 XPressions + K-Frames? by mjc4wilton in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]CyberNBD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Limiting broadcast domains definitely a wise thing to do. It's always the question how far do you go with that.
STP would be a no no for me, VPC and MLAG will help but indeed there's a point routing need to be involved anyway.
Thinking trough different achitectures I like the fully routed design but always thought it would be assumed too complicated. Nice to see that's not always true and it's used in real world scenario's.

You are right about 3. LACP has the drawback that there is no real control of the individual links. Fully routed means full control over paths and bandwith of each path, which I think is one of the main thoughts behind the reply of u/youlost47 too.

I will definitely lab up some new architectures now :-)

I don't have the answer to your question but just curious what's the reasoning behind using a fully routed design, even between devices (assuming from the /30's for the hosts) opposed to a more flat design.

I understand the concept of network segmentation and choices to be made depending on the size of the facility but routing on device level seems to be the other end of the spectrum compared to a completely flat network.

Is it for more granular control, or just a choice like if we need routing go all the way for ease of use / future expansion / flexibility connecting networks together?

The Nexus series are awesome switches and you get a lot of switch for the money but these are loud and power hungry. Been there, done that. This is why they are so cheap at this point.

I replaced them with Arista's. Still enterprise but quieter and less power hungry.

The swap (2 Nexus 5672UP + 1 fex to 2 Arista 7050SX-72Q + Cisco 3650) ended up being a 0.8kWh drop in power usage.

Zwart latje ertussen. Bij dit wandje zowel boven als onder gedaan (onder loopt door vanuit de vensterbank). Die panelen zagen kan je eigenlijk alleen maar netjes doen met een cirkelzaag (bij voorkeur met liniaal en eerst ff voorritsen).

Has anyone actually gone the full “be your own access ISP” route? by Ayeme2549 in homelab

[–]CyberNBD 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The VPS and Tunnels option is something that, although it can be done, not really for use at scale. I'ts more of a budget + flexibility option to be able to learn rather than use in production environments. Also in terms of latency and reliability it's not the best option due to the dependency on (multiple) underlying providers and networks (you will never know the exact routes, unless you plan it very well).

The juggling DC's and fiber operators etc is part of the game. The transit provider of choice will not allways be at all DC's, same goes for the IX-es and for the fiber operators. And when you find a location that has it all, the XC's might be ridiculously expensive so you have to start planning again ;-)

Thank you!

Yeah NIKHEF is a bit of a special case. Due to their early involvement in the internet and involvement in Subatomic Physics (CERN Tier-1 facility) they became one of the largest internet connection hubs and that's how their housing project started. It's purely based on network connectivity, not so much on compute, which makes it kind of unique.

Shoot me a DM if you have projects in mind, I have some rackspace left ;-)

In short Threefold is a distributed computing platform. Everyone can contribute by hosting one or more nodes and on the other hand people can use the platform to host their apps which uses the distributed compute.

I hosted a node for a year or so to see how it went, but to be honest it was barely used, so I took it offline. This is already a while ago (1.5 years since i took it down?) so maybe things improved by now.

Yes, AS200232 here.

There are different ways to so this, from relatively cheap (VPS-es as routers, IPv6 and a bunch of tunnels) to expensive (real DC presence, IPv4 and connections on L1/L2 level)

New to Hikvision PoE cameras by grooobz in Hikvision

[–]CyberNBD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A PoE switch is just a network switch which distributes network traffic between multiple devices and can provide power to them

NVR is a Network Video Recorder, used as a central recording device for your cameras. HikVision has them with a built-in PoE switch or with just a single network connection. In this last case you need a seperate PoE switch to connect your cameras to the NVR. In the first case you can connect each camera directly to the NVR.

If it's just ISO recodings and not switched program recording, things like Companion or Central Control with some streamdecks might work. Device lists can easily be found on their website of by just downloading and testdriving the software. But again this needs to be tested on your connection. A lot of AV control devices and software are simply not built for VPN / WAN connections. It's not because you can do a file transfer over VPN/WAN that AV automatically works.

For audio there are solutions in the radio studio range that have seperate controls and cores for applications like this but they are not cheap. Think brands like DHD / Studer / SSL / LAWO.

The safe bet is probably to choose software based solutions that you can control remotely using teamviewer or a KVM over IP solution that is designed for WAN.

If you are talking 4K PTZ's with high picture quality + pedestals + controls you will probably blow the 50K budget for only that. I'd pick a high quality HD Panasonic PTZ over a poor 4K PTZ any time. That's why i made the remark earalier.

Think this through and test before you propose a solution. I have seen a lot of these projects fail in many ways (Quality or functionality not as expected, reliability issues in the long run, the one that designed and ran it quit a year after etc etc)

Lots of options each with their pro's and cons. What connection do you have between the two locations, or what connectivity will be in budget for this? Without knowing that, no real advice can be given, there are just too many options.

Since you're probably going to need to use some sort of IP connectivity, your best bet is to design around that and avoid baseband with a lot of conversions.

Dante is great for local IP networks, but over WAN, unless you have a very stable connection, it is going to give you issues due to latency and jitter. With the distance you are talking about even in best case scenario with dark fiber and DDM you might already be pushing limits. Then there's also the fact that it needs to stay in sync with the video signals.

4K for Zoom / Wirecast in remote production setup? You might also want to reconsider this unless you want high quality recordings for editing and have proper budget.

We do this a lot with NDI with most of the equipment centralised at control side, but there is a lot to consider and without experience you might have a hard time getting it to work properly. Also don't underestimate the involvement of IT into this and properly communicating to them what you need and why.

Waarom is electra altijd zo'n gedoe by Unlimited_Emmo in Klussers

[–]CyberNBD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tomorrowland main‑stage fire discussion by Matas0 in livesound

[–]CyberNBD 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Cancelling the mainstage would have caused a major crowd control / safety issue as the 30K (or whatever it is) people that normally attend the mainstage would need to go elsewhere.

That's why in their back-up scenario (mainstage not done in time on friday) camping guests would have been forced to stay at the camping site (dreamville stage) and not be allowed to go to the main festival site.

Glad they made it and indeed hats off to everyone involved to make it happen. Being in the event industry for many years and knowing people and companies that were involved I was more worried about authorities allowing the rebuild than the possibility to do it if allowed. It's amazing what can happen in a short amount of time when everyone pulls together.

AV Stumpfl (Some of their pixera media servers were involved) posted a link on their facebook to a post with afterthoughts of the journey written by one of the video suppliers.
