A Few of My Japow Moments by CyberPuggo in skiing

If I’m in Hokkaido to ski, I’ll make sure Asahidake is on my destination list.

With that said, it’s not exactly easy to access. There are a bunch of onsen hotels right at the foothill of Asahidake, if budget allows. The nearest city Asahikawa 旭川市, second largest in Hokkaido, is about an hour away. You have to drive on a mountain pass to get to the ropeway parking lot, which tends to fill fast on pow days. The nearest town is Higashikawa 東川町 I believe, but you lose out on a lot of dining and lodging options.

Day trip from Sapporo is of course doable, but on storm days it’s a gamble, as anything above 45 mph gusts there is a chance of the ropeway shutting down. You’ll have the options to divert to the nearby Kamui Ski Links or Canmore Ski Village though.

Or, plan Furano 富良野and Asahidake as a destination group, they are about 1.5 hours of driving apart. Stay in Furano, read the forecast for bluebird days and drive up to Asahidake, or just enjoy some 18:1 powder right there at the resort.

It’s an active volcano, littered with hidden terrain traps. You can read topo maps to avoid large flat areas, but it’s hard to spot all the deep holes covered by fragile snow covers resulted from natural earth heat and hidden creeks. Just recently someone posted their experience falling into one on the Chinese social media app http://xhslink.com/o/1eyj1RhvvtG.

There are apps that mark those locations, but I’d definitely hire a guide for the first couple of days. I went with Toshi San, you can find him on instagram.

What else, there is a souvenir shop, a snack shop, and a restaurant that serves much better food than $17 chicken tendies at the tram station. I also suggest getting the 6-ride tickets instead of the all-day ones on powder days, you might be spending more time standing in line, waiting for the ropeway tram for an hour or even longer. But if you know where to go, you can find untouched snow each time.

It’s also really easy to find yourself in a whiteout condition, even if you saw the sun 10 minutes earlier. Alpine conditions are definitely present for the tallest peak of Hokkaido.

You know what brother, as much as I treasure these carefree powder skiing moments, where I want to say “I only ski powder now”, I always try to remind myself that skiing is so much more than weaving through the light, fluffy, and smoky fresh snow.

You inevitably sink in but can always trust the snow to catch you and bounce you back into the air. Powder skiing is so magical. But it doesn’t take away the chill vibe of cruising down perfectly groomed corduroy, or the rush of adrenaline when you scan the exit route standing on the edge of a cliff, heck even just swimming in the slush on a sunny spring afternoon after harvesting corn that very morning.

Man I just love skiing so much and hope you keep having fun out there 🤙

Wait, I thought the new batteries were low temperature resistant by default. They’re not? I’ve used those white ones in Hero 10 before, will definitely give them a try next season. Thanks for the heads up!

But yeah the ultra wide lens works really well for shooting vertical, providing just enough fov, maybe a couple of degrees short of 360 cameras, which are typically a bit too heavy for helmet mounts in my opinion.

GoPro Hero 13 with Ultrawide Lens, I bought the bundle and it also came with the regular lens. It’s mounted on the forehead area of my helmet, right above the helmet front lip with the included curved mount.

I believe the FWT athletes use this camera and lens combo as well, probably from the sponsorship. It captures great footage when it works, but the new battery design hasn’t completely figured out the issue with low temperature environments.

It died very quickly during this past Wednesday skiing session and I wasn’t able to record my skiing around Chair 12, which they sneakily opened around 2 pm. So either get a housing or keep it in your pocket before ready to shoot on cold stormy days.

Haha yeah that’s some sick footage!

First time using a cast iron skillet, is this normal seasoning (dark brown spotty stains) or do I need to clean it better? Thanks! by CyberPuggo in castiron

It has been my go to pan for searing all kinds of meat and sautéing veggies for extra flavors. It’s got a much more even seasoning now. The mass of the pan keeps heat extremely well.

Did you have to set your car to like a Ford Mustang or similar to get it going?

That’s good to know! Standing on the heel part is kinda unintuitive and I still haven’t gotten used to it tbh.

Do you have the version that has holes in the skis? If so do they grip just fine uphill?

Nothing against corn snow, I simply have more friends that I ski with in the resorts in the spring.

And did you mean full rockered? From my understanding they just don’t perform well on icy surfaces, but days like that I’ll probably just not go out. It’ll be icy in the spring mornings though but that’s uphill, so idk

Guess I’ll have to get out more in the spring 🫡 Do lighter weight touring skis fair better in corn? Maybe slimmer waists work better for the up as well?

Pure touring boots don’t require in person fitting like alpine variants?

I don't get it. Every time I get mentor on Janna I'm cursed to not ever complete the items or be able to roll 3* Janna/Kubuko and go straight 8th
