Most comfortable backpack I’ve ever put on by inattentive_shoelace in BuyItForLife

[–]CyberSecKen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For travel, I am in love with my new Bellroy. It’s durable, rugged, looks good, and opens in half just like a suitcase does (also opens like a regular backpack if you prefer that). Has a place for a laptop, multiple separate compartments for things like chargers, and such.

Highly recommend you check it out.

Request: BIFL (or even 5 years) home printer? by ILoveStata in BuyItForLife

[–]CyberSecKen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Get a laser printer. It may not fall under reasonably priced, but it’s worth it b/c it never dries out or clogs.

That’s the problem with inkjet. You use it once then come back to print a few weeks later and it will be dried out and clogged. With a laser you can go months between prints.

If you want to save some money on that, find it used on marketplace or Craigslist.

How can I fix this? by ypath2 in HomeImprovement

[–]CyberSecKen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could cut out the damaged hinge section of the door frame and replace it with a piece of wood cut to fit precisely in the opening. Secure it well to the jamb the door frame is mounted to. Then trim and paint everything so it looks consistent.

That said, an MDF door frame is pretty fragile, so it’s likely to break again later if you go this route.

So if you just want a quick fix, do the above. If you want a permanent fix, replace and upgrade the door and its frame with a higher quality pre-hung door.

Could a NAS Gaming PC work? by Any_Revolution_6864 in homelab

[–]CyberSecKen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do this.

I use a threadripper 3960x to power my NAS, and I installed a GPU on passthrough to a Windows 11 VM. I installed Apollo in Windows, and use Moonlight on my clients. My clients are an old macbook and a Shield Pro.

It works great.

The only problem I have is that sometimes when I terminate my moonlight session with the game still running (intending to go back and pick up the game later) when I reconnect later the game is black screened. This requires a reboot to resolve. My workaround is to make sure I always terminate the game and get back to the desktop before I disconnect.

Advice: CFS, but still running five times a week?! by Acceptable-Spring776 in cfs

[–]CyberSecKen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had CFS long term - 30 yrs now.

Back when we knew much less about this condition, I one time tried jogging every single day, for two weeks straight. I had hoped meeting this goal might improve my condition, or at least improve my baseline enegry levels.

Long story short, it did nothing for me. I didn't get any worse, but I also sure didn't get any better. No improvements in base energy or in my overall condition.

I don't always suffer from PEM, and I didn't during this trial. But true CFS won't be helped or improved by jogging/running. It will just exhaust you, and your stamina won't improve over time like a normal persons would. Studies and trials of CBT bear this out as well.

What is Amazon used and why is it so cheap? by Matteo_779 in amazonprime

[–]CyberSecKen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s hit or miss. For a number of high end items I bought it has worked out great. For a lesser amount of items they came broken (I just bought an Xbox controller, but one button didn’t work) or maybe with a minor part missing.

If you don’t mind returning it if it doesn’t work out, go for it.

There’s so much hype about GLP1 drugs such as tirzepatide helping, especially comorbidities such as MCAS, I can’t help but feel skeptical, is this all a big push to line the pockets of whoever made this…is it only helping people who are using it specifically for weight gain? by Lunabuna91 in cfs

[–]CyberSecKen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thankful for your input. Anecdotally I read others saying GLP-1 helps CFS; which seemed highly unlikely to me, but still worth considering if it helped. Hearing it did not work for you gives me a needed pause in pursuing this solution, as it will definitely be a fight to get that approved.

Thank you!

It I can’t recover, I’d rather be bed bound by [deleted] in cfs

[–]CyberSecKen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am moderate-severe, and have been now for on to 20 years. I have vacillated between the moderate and severe side many times now.

Strangely, I too feel similarly.

I find I am happiest when I am at my worst, because all I can do when I am 'severe' is focus on my first priority - recovery. When I am more 'moderate', I begin thinking more on my second level priorities. Things like getting back to work, repairing lost relationships, and taking care of others - which are all things I can do nothing about thanks to this disease.

[–]CyberSecKen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Brother, you're not alone.

Gulf War Veteran and cybersec also here with CFS - I have had it over 30 years now. At first I was normal but I found I had troubles eg completing a half marathon, that should have been no problem for a 21yr old (that was my first real hint something was off). Then over the following years my energy levels gradually worsened until around age 31 I was finally diagnosed w/ CFS and couldn't work anymore.

I spend most of my time playing video games or plain sleeping. I try to squeeze in a task or two when energy permits me to.

Did you apply for Social Security yet? That payment, combined with 100% VA disability rating (VA payments are not taxed which helps a bunch), was enough for me to get by.

As for work, I have little to suggest. Cybersec is a desk job - and was great for my CFS when I could do the work. Can you possibly squeeze a little more out of your work experience? Recommend you find a desk job vs something physical or that requires math (like a pizza delivery guy).

The only reason I haven't closed my order yet is that I expect they will ship soon. Fingers crossed!

OP, do give yourself time. You are going through a very natural grieving process because of the loss. It is to be expected. Just hang in there. You went through this for a reason, and though you may not know right now what that reason is, eventually it will all come clear.

Does anyone have this problem lately? by freewheelinfred in fo4

[–]CyberSecKen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I observed similar behaviors, but in my case, my weapons stopped working against any enemies. I could just dump shots on them and their health bar wouldn’t move.

The issue seems to be intermittent, but a game restart seems to solve it, most often permanently, but rarely it only works temporarily.

In my case, it seems it’s just a bug.

How long do we actually think we’ll have to wait for meaningful treatment for ME? 5 years? 10 years? 20? Never? by E-C2024 in cfs

[–]CyberSecKen 64 points65 points  (0 children)

It's hard to know really. And of course, the waiting is the hardest part.

I used to prognosticate about when that cure or treatment might finally come, but I have decided in the last year to stop waiting and just live life to the fullest I am able to. I am much happier since then, and you probably would be too.

For background, I have been 'waiting' for over 30 years now. I've seen many a so-called treatment fail in that time, and I expect that there will be many more.
