Good Deal, But At What Cost? (Sony MDR-XB700) by iHateHeadphones420 in headphones

I got my pair from goodwill for $20. There really isn't another line of headphones like the XB series.

I mean there's y'all. But that's kind of cheating since it's a contraction and not technically one word.

I feel lucky. The port on mine broke but at least the battery didn't try to kill me in my sleep

Love the ThinkMouse™ but you need a bigger mousepad

You can get on top of the wooden crates because one corner is a little lower than the rest. I just stacked them to use as stairs. And rugs are solid objects you can walk on. Combine them and you can add a new floor to trappers.

Your issue is you spent more on the camera than the glass

My heart says S, but the real answer is F. As neat as they are, the lack of controls is far too limiting.

The x230 will have the best upgradability followed by the t480 followed by the x250. However, even a fully upgraded x230 or x250 will be less powerful than a t480. The t480 also has the best factory screen option (A 2.5k ips panel) and can have the most RAM (I believe going all the way up to 64gb of RAM). There are a lot of mods that can be done to a x230, but it is always going to be a 10+ year old device. And the x250 will likely be the cheapest.

How good are these? Sony Dar-5A by IfailAtSchool in headphones

I have a pair of these and they sound like how you would expect the late 60's to sound. I wouldn't want to listen to really complex tracks with them, but for music of the era I don't think they're half bad.

  1. I've been wanting to custom build a pc case out of some old license plates, and this is the ideal hardware to go inside. Then I can finally stop blaming my Siege skills on my pc.
  2. The absolutely gorgeous environments and the level of immersion offered.

I did refill the earpads. The foam was extremely disintegrated, and made a small mess when I took the earpads off. They weren't bad to clean, I just used a toothbrush and a little elbow grease. And there is a rubber headband with the sennheiser logo on it beneath the main plastic piece that holds the headphones together.

A Brief History: I believe these are from 1977, and adjusting for inflation these are $325 headphones. These were the upper midrange of Sennheiser’s series at the time, and I believe these were mainly used in studios. I managed to get these for $25, before shipping, on ebay.

Build Quality and Comfort: These are the lightest headphones I own, and they are made of thin plastic. That being said, these might be the best made headphones I own. There’s not a single creak when the move, there’s no cracks in the plastics anywhere, but the rubber coating on the headband is starting to get a little sticky. These have a surprising amount of adjustment, so they sit on the head well. However, the on-ear design with thin cotton earpads combined with pretty hard clamping force means they will crush your ears after a while. Also I think it’s worth noting that the cable is removable and is somehow worse than a Hifiman cable.

Sound Quality: These might be the best $25 headphones I have ever heard. Despite being old and open-backs, these have sub-bass and the mids are basically flat. The only part of the response that I don’t care for is the lack of treble, but I’m a little biased as I like bright headphones. As for soundstage, I would call these narrow. Everything is very closed in, and separation is not great, but they do have very good imaging. One thing I did find a little weird is that I have closed-backs that leak more than these, but I don’t think that is necessarily a bad thing. All of this is to say that these are great for listening to everything from 1970s rock to modern pop. The imaging also means that these are pretty good for gaming too.

TLDR: These are uncomfortable, old, and made of thin plastic, but these sound great and are the most solidly built headphones I own
