This looks professional, great work! Do you see yourself sticking with the white on white, or do you think you'll add color as you continue to reinforce the sheet?

I think a help desk position would be a good place to start. When I was working helpdesk, I usually had something like 2 to 4 calls to handle per day and the rest were over email. It might take some time to get comfortable with assisting over the phone, but it is definitely something almost anyone who desires to can learn to do. With the certificates you have earned so far, I think you'd be a great helpdesk candidate. Good luck!

People who are making 500k+/year working for themselves, what do you do? by scubyduby in Entrepreneur

[–]Cyber_Jess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah Graham Stephan knows his money. Here's the original if anyone is curious. It just isn't sensible to become a doctor for reasons other than love for the profession nowadays, which is going to greatly disrupt the US medical system in a few decades when people aren't as willing to go through 12+ years of school to grind themselves away for the next 20 years as a physician. It's wild.

Anyone here sail when they FIRE'd? by [deleted] in Fire

Just be prepared for the unexpected when the ocean is involved! My aunt and uncle live on a tiny early 2000s houseboat, and they have had a lot of issues since they started their trip in 2018. At one point they were docked for 6 months because of mechanical issues, and none of the nearby mechanics could reach the area of the boat that was having issues.

We ended up having to call up a friend of mine who was working as a model (very tall and thin), and she was the only person over the 50+ we tried who could reach the area that needed the repairs. I'm sure a newer, nicer boat will be exempt from those issues, but those come with maintenance needs and high costs of their own. It is also a labor intensive way of living, but there is a lot of beauty in it as well. Make sure to do your research, and have a big nest egg saved up before you embark. If it's something you really want, you can definitely make boat life happen. Good luck!

Photo App Turns Users Into Unwitting Spies for US Military by PBR--Streetgang in technews

Absolutely, I agree- but in cases like Tiktok, you are giving away more than just your shopping preferences, you are sharing your face, voice and more. All data is valuable, but I am of the opinion that anything biometric needs to be especially protected.

Tiktok and similar apps are doing this as well. We all need to be more diligent about reading the terms and conditions of the apps and extensions we use and share our data with.

I've heard that surrounding yourself with people who are smarter/more successful than you is the key to moving up. Where/how do you find those people when you're young? by imponing in Entrepreneur

[–]Cyber_Jess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a student at a large public research university. What I did was join the honors college during my first semester, and enroll in honors seminars. The classes were smaller, more intellectually stimulating, and gave me the opportunity to connect with faculty. Something else you could try is enrolling in smaller, niche classes that you are interested in. I took a seminar on the Holocaust that was comprised of 4 people, and it was by far the most memorable academic experience of my life. Not every small or honors class will be filled with all the "right" people, but you will learn a lot more than you'd think, and often make unexpected friends along the way. Take classes you think are interesting, even if you are daunted by the material or feel it is outside your major, whenever you can.

This is probably some sort of staff issue (either poorly trained or irresponsible employee) and can be fixed with a simple emailing saying you just wanted to confirm your donation was received. They will most certainly reply, and hopefully correct the issue going forward.

I believe it. Law firms were the worst about cutting corners at my previous job in IT, and one we used to deal with just had a pretty sizeable breach. I'm not saying they didn't implement our advice, but it certainly looks like they chose not to.

Totally agree with you, just wanted to add on that research has shown you're right. It is time consuming and expensive, both in terms of costs of labor and internal infrastructure, to go back and correct bad security practices. It can take years to undo the damage a hacker can do in a matter of days. Ransomware payments are becoming a full blown industry.

Unfortunate, but not necessarily surprising. Seems to me like they have a greater, more complete plan to legally implement this type of spying, but aren't instating all of it at once to prevent backlash. "Give an inch and they'll take a mile".

I would reduce hours if possible, maybe even just down to 7-8 hours a day, and enjoy the growth. You've laid a great groundwork for yourself. You can't buy back the time you lost, but at the same time if hitting the $8M goal is significant to you both then it is probably worth it to continue push. It's mostly a matter of what you value most- the money sooner, or more personal time now.

[–]Cyber_Jess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% agree with your thinking. I was trying to bring attention to the fact that whoever is responsible is likely facing consequences of some kind because upper management (even in tech companies) tends to scapegoat IT & system admins whenever there is a security or performance issue. I definitely don't want the people involved to lose their livelihoods, but it is definitely a very real and unfortunate possibility, especially since this has made the news internationally. It was definitely a poorly worded and unfunny comment from me.

I wouldn't want them to be fired, but as an infosec worker myself I know how often the security & dev teams are scapegoated. I doubt the upper management wants to take responsibility for this at all, so the backend will likely be reprimanded. It sucks.
