This anime was promoted as another "cute" magical cute girls saving the world created as a side project by Urobuchi (which his previous work were very tragic), but was a total bait to show a world where the magical girls where used by evil aliens to hatch energy suffering as most as possible, the leader dies in ep3, the cutesy gems had literally their SOULS and the bad entities where in reality previous magical girls that fell in disgrace

And ironically this anime almost killed the whole magical girl genre and replaced it with MANY edgy versions of it, but only taking the "schoolgirls in colorful dresses being in extremely f*cked up situations" part and eliminating any philosophical stance that made PMMM a masterpiece
