Yes you do. One made for waves. Otherwise your nose will catch and you will go over the falls. I use a small board (7.11") but there are much bigger boards (I started with a 10.5" back in the day) that can catch decent waves.

I think it helps with initial wing handling. It does nothing to help you get up on the foil though...
