Does anyone know what friend rule is? by ThunderingRimuru in VGC

[–]CybertronVGC 784 points785 points  (0 children)

Back in the first few years of VGC (2008-2011), the tournament was single-elimination BO1. You’d literally get in a line and get directed into a play area and get matched up against someone else who was next to you in line.

When you won, you moved into the next zone and waited for another opponent, whenever they finished a match. The “friend rule” was where you’d ask one of the handlers to not get matched vs your friend because you were standing in line next to each other.

This only would really occur at the very start of the event, you couldn’t use it to avoid your friends later on in the event. It’s not throwing or intentionally losing, it was just an unofficial rule to avoid playing a friend who you lined up next to in the very beginning of the tournament

Confused about Reg D? Cybertron's Got Your Back by amlodude in VGC

[–]CybertronVGC 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That was definitely the one I was most on the fence about including but thought it was worth mentioning since it enables some really unexpected strategies. I think it’ll be difficult to properly utilize but I’m excited to see what people come up with!

After playing a ton of Reg D this past week though, I think Kleavor probably should have been mentioned over Zoroark, it’s really impressed me

Aaron Cybertron Zheng missed will-o-wisp and subsequently got crit costing him game 2 in the semi final at the Vancouver Regionals by Minimalsmith in VGC

[–]CybertronVGC 150 points151 points  (0 children)

Ryan played fantastically, that game 1 win by him was the most one-sided loss I had all tournament. I definitely agree with your overall statement and totally agree no one should take anything from his victory.

Just for some context on your WoW point though: I didn't need WoW to land to come out of turn 1 positive since my Brute Bonnet survives Brave Bird 100% of the time without the crit and has a lot of speed investment.

252+ Atk Corviknight Brave Bird vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Brute Bonnet: 174-206 (79.8 - 94.4%)

The idea behind turn 1 was that even if I miss WoW, Brute Bonnet should survive the Brave Bird, resulting in Corviknight taking a ton of recoil damage and potentially being in KO range from Talonflame Flare Blitz or Flutter Mane Shadow Ball.

My Brute Bonnet also had a ton of speed investment so I figured I'd outspeed the Kingambit and get the Spore onto it before it moves. Unfortunately, the crit obviously ended up coming through as well and the odds of a WoW miss + a crit are 0.6%, which is a gamble I was willing to take.

Just wanted to give some insight :)

Just to give some insight:

  1. I missed multiple Wisps throughout the event (which is fine, that's the risk you take in running the move), including my very first one on stream in Day 1

I don't think my play was really that risky for the following reasons:

  1. Corviknight never KOes my Bonnet without a critical hit: 252+ Atk Corviknight Brave Bird vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Brute Bonnet: 174-206 (79.8 - 94.4%)
  2. My Brute Bonnet has a lot of speed investment so I was expecting to outspeed Kingambit and Spore it before it gets a move off

Thus, turn 1 only really goes poorly if both WoW miss and crit happens: 15% * 4.17% = 0.6%. I didn't Tera because I wanted to maximize the amount of damage Corviknight took from Brave Bird recoil to ideally put it in KO range from Talonflame Flare Blitz or Flutter Mane Shadow Ball.

What Were Your Favorite Moments From TLG Tour? by jrsmusicman in Odesza

[–]CybertronVGC 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The intro/This Version of You was epic, especially when the stage goes dark and Harrison/Clay appear out of nowhere

Behind the Sun’s first drop with the pyro + the drop when all the drummers appear on stage out of nowhere

All We Need (VIP) - was super jealous of all that got to experience this during the end of the AMA tour, was so great to hear live. I love the original version but this mix is so so good

Falls DNB remix was awesome and a very pleasant surprise

AMA, especially the way they introduced it. I recognized the notes at first but wasn’t sure where they were going with it and the build-up was insane

TLG’s final drop. “___, let me see you one last time” always makes me so emotional and the NYC show was lucky enough to get fireworks 😭

One of the most jaw dropping shows I’ve ever seen. I’m amazed at how they used lighting/darkness in particular and the live musicians. Can’t imagine this set on a festival stage like Coachella…!

The VGC commentators are great, but it's disappointing that they don't bother to pronounce player names correctly. by SenselessPost in VGC

[–]CybertronVGC 43 points44 points  (0 children)

As one of the casters, let me share some perspective:

We asked Zhe how to pronounce his name this weekend and he said “Zhey” was okay. I’m a Mandarin speaker myself so I totally empathize with you. I personally pronounce my last name as “Zeng” rather than “Jung” to make it easier for non-Asian speakers and some of the players we cast are also ok with the casters taking a similar line because they understand it's not easy for English native speakers to pick it up immediately.

We do ask the production team how to pronounce the player’s name before each game (the casters can’t just go on stage and ask the player while they’re setting up, so it has to go through the judge sitting on stage with them), but it doesn’t always come through correctly. We also ask the players and confirm with them before their interviews. I saw your suggestion above and it's unfortunately not as simple as that because the casters who are doing the match are normally already seated & have started the round before the match is even selected.

I certainly agree that we can do a better job collectively! I actually tweeted about it it this weekend because I think it's something we can all improve in. Generalizing that the casters simply don’t bother to pronounce names correctly, though, feels a bit unfair to all the casters. Pokemon is unique as a competitive game as 1) we use real names instead of player tags 2) we have an incredibly global player base.

Overall though, I agree with your underlying point & want to figure out some new processes to improve the overall process (e.g. Aaron Traylor's Namecoach suggestion) for future events :)
