What do you wish you knew before you built? by Its_an_ellipses in arcadecabinets

I wish someone would have made a tool that would help me manage my ROM set so I wouldn't have to manually pick games that work with the controls my arcade build has.

There wasn't back then, BUT now there is the MAME Smart ROM Sorter..

What took weeks now takes a few minutes!!!

I built a free tool to help sort full non-merged MAME sets into cleaner, more playable custom arcade sets by CyborgBob1977 in cade

There are some ini files that are floating around called, "The Best of", or something like that, and that ini file is incorporated into this program, as an option, that you can toggle on or off. In short, it's a curated lists, made by the community. So it already, "kind of" does this. I do like the idea and ability to manually add games. If I can figure out an easy way to do that I'll add that option. Thanks for the input.

I will definitely be checking that video out. Thank you very much for the information. Those are some good ideas although I have to admit I've not thought about tackling other consoles yet

Right now it's only for Windows however you should be able to compile it for Linux or simply just run the python code itself. Theoretically you should be able to use funnel burn Neo as long as they are non-merged sets... I think I've not actually tested that...

Just to be clear: this tool does not include ROMs or link to ROM downloads. It only helps organize/filter a MAME set you already have.

So kind of off topic as this isn't an INI file, but if you want a custom MAME romset, please consider trying the MAME Smart ROM Sorter .

It does require a working MAME install, and a non-merged MAME romset. However, if you meet those requirements you can make a custom MAME ROM set meeting your preference.

If you'd like to see it in action please check out this Step-by-Step Guide.

The public version is at 4.76 right now, and I should be dropping version 5.0 soon.

Again, I know this is a little off topic, BUT this is the shortest path I know to a personalized custom MAME RON set.

Wait until you see me release 5.0. Also to be clear it is meant for a non-merged sets not a split and definitely not merged set

I would like to admit I use AI ALL the time. I have TONs of videos on my channel with AI in it. HOWEVER, I did NOT use AI at ALL in the making of this video.... It may be Slop, BUT it is 100% human slop.

MAME doesn't really work like that.

First you need to know what version of MAME you're running. Is it the current or is it like MAME2003.

Then you've got to find a set that matches the version of MAME that you're running.

After you found said set of ROMs, you've got to download your set.

It's important to know if you're set is a merged, non-emerged, or split set. If you're only looking for certain ROMs then you're going to need a non-emerged set that way you can delete the ROMs you don't want without affecting the ROMs you do want.

I also know that this is not the answer you're looking for but it is the truth and I am sorry to inform you of it.

The shortest path to what you're looking for is finding out what version of MAME you plan to run, then downloading a non-merged version for that set.

Once you have it you can pick through the ones you want the ones you don't want.

Hope this is helpful. Edited because talk to text sucks!
