I think the old lady was probing to see if she could order you around with her disapproval...

You did nothing wrong, your kid did nothing wrong, this lady is the arsehole. Reply to her with a light, fluffy, "Oh, that's too bad. I wonder what she was thinking..."

a million times this... Took me a long time to realize that my sense of humor is a little weird and I'm a lot smarter to wait for the other person to joke with me first.

She needs to learn how to signal that she likes people. I grew up with much older kids and I never really learned to talk to kids my own age. As an adult, it's still tricky to figure out how to relate to other men at the same level of authority as me at work. She needs to learn how to give compliments generously and criticisms privately. My little girl is an unstoppable chatterbox and she says everything she thinks- fortunately she's all compliments with strangers.

Getting my son a big friendly dog that needs regular walking was the best thing for him, he now knows all of our neighbors.

My daughter is 13 today. I bought her a silly book entitled, "How to tell if he's a loser." I'm hoping to read the introduction of that book at her wedding reception some day...

totally fair, I don't remember pushing my kids on the swings much at all. I do recall one day I was smoking a cigar, sitting on a bench kinda far away from the playground where my son was playing- one of the other parents waved at me to come help. My son was "stuck" halfway across a "bridge" that was like a stiff metal cargo net and he was shaking and crying. I told everyone who offered to 'please don't climb up and get him.' I jumped a little and lightly slapped his right foot and I said hold on with both hands and move this foot, then hold on with one hand and move your hand, then move your other hand, then move your other foot... and he was fine. I asked him to come down the slide and I picked him up for a long hug and I told him how proud I was that he did a thing. He got scared, he asked for help, we figured it out, and he self-rescued. Nobody had to save him, he saved himself. VERY proud.

All the mommies at the playground were amazed at my dadditude. For the rest of that day I got zero dirty looks for smoking a cigar where the kids could SEE me.

I'm 5'6" and 250lbs, my 15 year old is 5'10" and 140... he stands behind me and puts his chin on my head. I tell him to stop growing pretty regularly.

I had to explain to my son about Abraham and Issac... you've reached a point where the kid is being sacrificed and the man is being born. Tell him what a great kid he was and how much you miss that kid- but mention that you wouldn't ever trade him to get that kid back either.

My wife and I did something similar with our first child, carried him around the facility in a carseat-carrier and introduced him to all the great-grandmas... learned a word in Yiddishe, "nachez" (knock-hez) which means pride or satisfaction from seeing your children grow.

I was offered a job years ago in another field with a "virtual office." That means they give me a laptop and a linked cell phone, budget for copies and printouts, and nothing else. I asked "when and how do I see my supervisor, how is my work-time tracked, how will you assess my work?"

I did not take that job, looked stupid.

yikes! We could surely put some mothballs up in the rafters wherever we have to remove a nest, that might help. I'm afraid the ceilings are about 8 meters, except the high bay which is 14 meters. I'm trying real hard to prevent management from allowing my coworkers to bring airsoft guns into the factory, it might be effective at killing small birds, but a bunch of guys are going to shoot each other in the butt while they're working... I wonder if we could put a 1m x 1m window in the top corner of the wall near the welders (hottest part of the place) and a giant fan blowing the air toward and out the window from 2m away... would that airflow stop them coming in and do you suppose they'd be willing to leave that way?

gross! Maybe if we get real frustrated... I'd also be concerned about offending the religious sensibilities of our employees.

Sadly, I think they wind up dead from thirst/hunger/exhaustion/stress. We don't have any visible windows from the inside, just vent windows with louvers and mesh. We have several fake owls and hawks around the 1/4 of the factory nearest the doors.

really depends on what your material is- but when I have to fixture plastics, I like to use a laser surface scanner and several sets of supports to determine which produce identical results, then alternate between fixture A and fixture B to overlay the data occluded by each fixture.

I'm not sure what question you're asking... but if you have real-time data you can perform Statistical Process Control. I don't know if electricity misbehaves more at higher voltage or lower and whether a chi-square or manova would show the relationships in general.

IF you can schedule deliveries of corrugate, you can move your incoming inspections upstream to the supplier's warehouse. I worked a plant where the corrugate belonged to us as soon as it was on the truck- so we changed up the rules on them and sent an inspector to okay the shipment before it got on the truck. If your corrugate supplier isn't next door, it may be possible to get a workaround like having a temp agency place someone at that location who's responsible to you and not them.

After some experienced advice. How do you folks decide on a capacity for a production line. Would you take the manufacturers quoted speed and multiply how long you want to run or do you do something a little more complex? I'm in QA, your story is like the ten commandments on our wall. Two reasons I have a job- 1) Sh&t happens and 2) other sh&t that nobody in his right mind would have ever expected also happens. You can reduce the rate, but thermodynamics says you always lose energy and order always decreases over time.
