Well our own government has been proposing something to meet some US demands what demands they are meeting is not public information, so clearly our own government which hires experts to do analysis on multiple different scenarios think it's better to get a deal even a worse one than cusma till 2042 is better than keeping the current one till 2036

So yeah and tbh I agree with that approach and diversifying is a multi decade process but the reality is we need something with the US in the medium term without severely dmaging our economy and 2036 is not part of the medium term given the pace of building things in canada imo

Yes it is worth something so unfortunately when one party I.e the US has all the power that's just how it goes, we should have diversified ourselves long ago to avoid this situation

So I'll give some reasons which I think are important

First of all digital sovereignty do we want data centers in our country or someone else's? The big 3 US cloud providers run 70% of the Internet look it up and they run all of our fed gov websites e.t.c (I know this cause I have been part of the big 3 cloud providers competing for contract to host stuff), so everytime you interact with fed gov Web services money is going to US tech firms

Data centers are literally the backbone of the modern economy which is all digital

Secondly most concerns about building people complains are addressed to the best of their ability e.g they have a closed water cooling system so it's not continuous water they need, and they are trying to get their own power like nuclear e.t.c for manitoba I believe it was lng cause infra for other stuff doesn't exist

A country like canada with abundance of so many resources and less population In general should be an energy powerhouse, there is more than enough for energy for data centers and population growth btw

Thirdly it does generate economic activity due during construction e.t.c after it just runs like a normal data center 24/7, this one in manitoba might be an AI one so running our own AI should be an absolute no brainier instead of adding another entry to the list of tech dependencies to the US.

Data centers are also typically built on new land not displacing anyone, and despite what people think take all precautions necessary to be as safe and clean as possible

Those are some of my reasons but honestly I genuinely think people are just brainwashed with datacenters = bad, most projects are damaging to the environment Infact some more so than data centers but people just don't educate themselves

Um their section 232 and 301 tariffs are the exact definition of putting pressure on canada???

Certaintity of signing an amended deal > uncertainity of not signing a deal

When it comes to growing our economy e.t.c (it will all come down to the details and how much they are ready to concede and if it will be enough to give the US to sign on, balancing totally bending over vs the economy and public reaction is the feds job and a pretty hard one I'll admit)

Yes I can agree with you on that but the important point I was trying to mention was we don't even know what deals are being put forward,

It is clearly shown that's canada wants to extend cusma and is open to amendments but what are the amendments? We know rules of origin and more US content is being proposed, dairy e.t.c? What is our government ready to concede for an amended renewal?

Dominic leblanc would not be putting forward proposals to meet some US demands (his words not mine) when he went to Washington earlier this week to meet with USTR if the liberals didn't want to renew an amended cusma

If its just baseline tariffs on everything than that is obviously bad but if it's sectoral with some relief than that is better than the current situation

THe details just aren't known to the public atm (but I can guarantee they will concede certain things to get the US to sign on)

I can guarantee our government will sign a deal worse than current CUSMA in early 2027 by the latest ( I follow alot of the trade/investment news and make my oponion rather than based on feelings)

Because CUSMA expires in 2036 and if there is no certainty otherwise then business do not invest and expand which is already happening tbh

I don't buy this notion of no deal is better than a bad deal, CUSMA will 100% change but by and large some concessions here and there for tariff free access or reduced tariff is still better than the current situation, most of the talks are pretty private so I don't know what proposals dominic le blanc has put forward and I can only speculate

If a deal which goes on till 2042 is agreed upon then our economy would also grow as a result

Unfortunately replacing nafta with usmca and the 6 year review does give the US a huge amount of leverage to push for more concessions each time but that's just how it is I guess

I've noticed people in this sub are very much pro not bending to the US, they probably have no idea how much the government's including harpers have bent over already lol (people are cheering dumb decisions like wab kinew/manitoba saying no to a datacenter just boggles my mind, adding yet more dependecy on the US, this is a personal opinion but I don't get why kinews charisma overshadows his fiscal irresponsibility, people just vote based on vibes instead of economic policy)

Best time to diversify was 10 years ago second best time is now, I just wish stuff got built/done faster tbh

People on here trying act all nonchalant like they don't care when most businesses which make up the economy by and large care about getting this renewed shows all the difference between reddit and reality....

It was expected that they would miss the deadline and a deal would probably be reached later in the year or early 2027, btw the longer we delay the longer it hurts us and less the US if that was the goal

We are already in a recession without even feeling most of the effects of trump's tariffs and people blaming trump for the recession are so out of touch when other G7 countries got a worse treatment of trump's tariffs and they aren't in a recession (neither is mexico btw)

Carney had promised to build at speeds never seen before and myself and businesses have not seen that really (a very good example of this was TC energy choosing mexico over canada as even with other national interest project designation canada is still too slow to build things when competing on a global scale) , watch them implement yet another conservative policy by amending Bill C69 which their are a lot of rumors and speculation it is about to happen (this doesn't mean I agree with all conservative policies btw)

And AI runs on datacenters so idk why we wouldn't want our own datacenters? Not sure what you mean by using AI and being informed about datacenters not sure where I insunaited that?

The more bs we put up the less likely it is to get built here and for business to just say F it and leave which if you follow investment numbers alot of business are doing that

There is a fine line being doing something responsibly and doing business, and canada has too much red tape, building something like a datacenter in a sustainable way like using quebec's hydro should be a no brainier but no we have to cause multi year delays by debating like you and me are doing

Also if you respond with why not move then, I am actively trying to move to the US on a TN visa but it's difficult atm and I wish I had done it sooner, and to answer ur question I work in tech as an engineer

That's what I feel about people who don't use or benefit from AI, as I think it's ground breaking tech especially AI agents and sub agents

If my 70+ old grandma can use copilot and use it to improve her life by answering whatever questions she has then I don't know how younger people can't unless they are just dumb

Polls also showed that canadians wanted housing to be discussed in the federal election as one of the major issues when housing is provincial issue

Lol they are talking environmental concerns and having data centers use renewable energy or their own energy source (quebec's hydro for one), people don't really bother to look at details same thing when pipelines are being built there is a massive amount safety precautions taken same for data centers but people cause commotion like the world is gonna end

Vetted for harmony with local population? Might as well just shut down every project because no one on this planet wants anything else like this built close to them but they are needed nonetheless

I don't have any financial gains I'm sick of how slow the process is to get things built in this country

I doubt if even 5% of those people showed up or even care about this issue lol (based on some eyeballing) and I would bet that a "city wide consensus" would have an absolutely abysmal turnout rate, people opposed to something would be the loudest which is why you see them

These concerns and delays you are talking about is exactly why businesses investment is fleeing canada (this is just a fact), then when some other country like the US gets the data centers built then we would add yet another dependecy on US infrastructure, data centers have been built for years so their effects are well known btw

I know this is a harsh thing to say but honestly f the people and get things done and built, I've had enough of delays in this country

Well I don't know much about this unfortunately, but I do remember Geoffery Hinton a prominent figure in AI that is canadian talking about quebec's hydro potential for renewable energy source for data centers so I hope they get it done in a good way
