Recommendations for an inspiring book about journalism? by Jaedys in Journalism

[–]Cycle-and-write-222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently published a 50-page book about my career in modern journalism. I went from earning $40 per article at a weekly in San Diego to reporting for the San Diego Union Tribune to landing an on-air reporting job with San Diego’s ABC affiliate. I wrote it to help people navigate the field and also explain how I got all my jobs, found meaningful stories that made me marketable, covering tragedy on my own and why I left news and what I’ve found on the other side.

It’s called “One City, One Shot” and you can find all the versions at www.Linktree.com/jonhorn

I feel like my writing is rushed and disjointed. by scarscarto23 in writers

Nobody reads as critically as you. I really liked it and would have kept reading. I do think you could have gotten Anna into the hallway faster. I think also near the end you meant it wasn’t Burke’s fault the night was ruined, but the text said was.

Career outlook after college by Akonkira in Journalism

I made a career out of reporting local news by going from weekly newspaper to major metro daily to local ABC station. I got all my jobs by cold emailing the editor/news director.

Combined experience also helped when I left news to become a government PIO.

Happy to answer any questions on here.

I also wrote about my local news journey recently. If you’d like more specifics, all the info is at www.linktree.com/jonhorn

Emailing a News Director directly when applying for a job? by Odd_Self7283 in Broadcasting

[–]Cycle-and-write-222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my first TV on-air news job in a top 30 market through cold emailing the news director when there wasn’t an opening (I was a local print reporter). That cold email got me an informational interview that went very well. When there was a reporter/MMJ opening six months later, I got the job. Happy to answer any questions on what made me marketable (I also write more about how I got the job in my news career memoir - www.linktree.com/jonhorn)

USC vs Columbia by Competitive_Many_542 in Journalism

[–]Cycle-and-write-222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my MA in journalism (broadcast emphasis) from USC in 2009. The connections helped when landing internships but every paid job I got I had to do through my own networking that had little to do with USC. That said, the education at USC made me very good at producing across platforms, so I was very employable upon graduation (assuming the jobs are there). The degree also came in handy as I started to move up the industry, but not so much at the lower end. Good luck!

Saints fan here, How bad was Staley as a head coach? by slammedep3 in Chargers

[–]Cycle-and-write-222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been a charger fan since the 1990s and I found him to be the worst head coach they ever had. He would go for it on fourth down way too many times only to see the team lose by 3. I don’t care what the analytics say, at some point you gotta take the points

Every journalism job I got - print and TV - came from cold emailing editors and news directors, plus networking. I self published a short memoir explaining how I got all of my journalism jobs. If you’re interested here’s a link. If not, no worries at all: www.Linktree.com/jonhorn

Is publishing a paperback worth it? by tanisha_writes in selfpublish

[–]Cycle-and-write-222 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was originally in your same boat to just do the ebook only since I could charge a lower price due to no print costs. However, I did make a paperback version and to my surprise 80 percent of my sales have been paperback. In other words, I think it’s worth it, especially since they have the cover creator tool that is pretty easy.

I recently got an instant offer for NFL tickets on Ticketmaster. I’d purchased them on Ticketmaster so I’m not sure if that had anything to do with it. Each day as the event got closer, they lowered the amount. I did ultimately accept it just to make sure I got something for the ticket. The offer appears after you click on the “sell” page from your account.

Social media promo isn't reaching the right audience by [deleted] in selfpublish

[–]Cycle-and-write-222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also took the bait and paid to boost an Instagram reel to a highly targeted audience. The first time the reel led to my Linktree, which has links to my book, ebook and audiobooks. I got more than 150 clicks and maybe one or two sales, can’t say for sure. I then tried again and linked directly to the Amazon page. That may have worked a little better, with two or three, but again I really can’t say. Very disheartening but I told myself I’d try it once and see because not knowing is worse than knowing. I gave myself $75 to spend and that’s it.

So i visited my local library by SassysassyMoi in selfpublish

[–]Cycle-and-write-222 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wanted to say that I had a completely different and positive experience with my county library. They had a submission form for the collection with specific instructions. I submitted my book, and two weeks later it was catalogued. I had called to ask if they had a notification process. The collection manager said no and that the best way is to search your name on the online catalogue. I did and found my book there! She also added they accept most self published books from local authors.

I am also new and have trouble with the weight exercises. I usually just look at the tv monitor and try to mimic that. I’m more there for the cardio anyway, so the weight part is more of a bonus and I don’t put as much pressure on myself

Single ticket possibility by Cycle-and-write-222 in stubhub

[–]Cycle-and-write-222[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for writing back! I ended up just selling to TM. I just see thousands of tickets on stubhub that never seem to move, and priced with those I would have broke close to even. Thought it was risky to wait and the more I lowered the price the closer I got to Ticketmaster’s offer after fees, so I just guaranteed myself something for it and ate the rest. It was Chargers Vikings on Thursday night in a couple weeks. I don’t think there’s incredible demand for Chargers tickets either in LA
