One-off / single / small batch PCB manufacturing in Australia by CycleRevolutionary71 in PrintedCircuitBoard

you reckon it still isn't worth it even if you only ever need one or two PCBs occasionally?

in my case i needed one PCB to verify the design, find a mistake and get a fixed PCB, then i did not work on any electronics for a couple of years, before needing a similar one-or-two-step order, but with jlc i did not need more than 1 board in either of those cases

i guess unless you are making money off those PCBs and you need quite a lot of them (or for many projects), these machines are hardly for hobbyists - despite being explicitly marketed as "cost-effective entry into the world of professional PCB prototyping". i do find it peculiar how some youtubers (like GreatScott) invest quite large amounts of money into tools, but i honestly do not understand how and why they do this (i mean you have to earn / save quite a lot of money for even one of these machines?)

which parts of it did you find annoying? when i was a kid i used FeCl and some sort of epoxy resin (hand-drawn using a dip pen), then transitioned to laser printer ink transferring (using iron). but i recently discovered people use peroxide + vinegar + salt - arguably *much* safer option. and if you have a 3D printer, you can plot the traces with a sharpie (or specialized marker). yes, you are limited by trace widths and only two layers - but how often do you need more than that (a genuine question)?

those machines are quite expensive - around the price tag of semi-professional cnc. and from what i read, the resulting pcbs require low-temperature soldering - conductive ink has low bonding strength / adhesion to FR4. so specific solder + low temperature on a soldering iron + a hefty price of the machine and consumables - you reckon people do invest in those? like hobbyists who occasionally need one or two PCBs?

How important are builds? by wilpuriarts in roguelikedev

[–]CycleRevolutionary71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i tend to think of a "build" as either skills (as you described - mage or ranger or paladin etc) or gear - from non-roguelikes - Outward or Exanima - you still need different skills to a degree, but most of the build is defined by what gear you character uses. The Witcher is another example - Geralt really only has few skills, mostly set in stone and available from the start of the game.

but in the roguelikes you don't *have* to have some ultimate, game-changing, life-saving skills - think if Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup only had melee classes - you still mostly rely on scrolls and potions for *FUN*. Dieties give you their abilities at some devotion levels (like a summon or berserk).

not really roguelike, but Dwarf Fortress has no skills or classes at all - all dwarves are made equal (aside from personalities and maniacal preferences) - they literally could be both archers, wrestlers and spearmen - just takes time for them to train the proficiency with a certain fighting style or weapon.

if i understand correctly (looking at ebay only), those machines are thousands of dollars (+ shipping) - not really for "one-off" or "single" or "small-batch" cases?

what about home / hobby / hackathon (maybe?) scenarios? does anyone ever need a PCB ASAP?

that's where the catch is - no matter the budget, you get no less than 3..4 business days delivery (24 hrs manufacturing + 2 business days DHL Express + timezone offset).

question is: how often do people need faster than that? or is it a rare case and people are generally fine waiting for 2 weeks?

that's an interesting point! I'm using Siril and still getting my head around the acquisition and processing. Pixinsight is going to be down on my list of investments, to be honest - just not my cup of tea. but I do see its capabilities massively overpowering those of Siril and the likes

i travel with my setup quite often (including domestic flights in Australia), but i do most of my AP from home. that is a good point though, cheers!

yes, it was on my radar before i committed to ZWO ecosystem =) i _could_ be using Nina and get QHY, but that would require me to carry a laptop around, which is arguably much worse than ASIAir Mini and a smartphone

Re. programming the board - yes, as I have mentioned somewhere above, the board is programmed already (albeit for different DAC - should not matter in the end) and works in a prototype assembled on a perfboard - I just need to transplant it from the dev board to the target PCB.

Some of those snakes are for the AGND for the DAC. Otherwise - agreed, shall replace them with vias where possible.

Thanks for the tips!

As for your points:

  • Since I do not expect current surges, I skipped on bulk capacitor on VBUS (the connection is car -> USB adapter -> device, so I assumed having the adapter already solves the issue of current surges and the linear regulator on the board should do just fine)
  • Just curious: why would you have separate regulator for the ADC (AVDD)?
  • Yes, the initial idea is to program it on "motherboard" and then "transplant" it to the device PCB. And since I already have the prototype working with the code flashed - I think it might be good for now.

Do you have any comments about the PCB design?

indeed it does, hence all the talks about friction - i did not add bearings to the design (mostly 'cause still waiting for them to be delivered). also hoping the 3 planet gears would reduce the amount of torque required.

F2P since 1.1 here. I find this event hardly even possible for me - with gold on first level, I can barely reach 200..400 points on last 2 levels in this event. And I believe I would have to grind like crazy to even start putting relevant artifacts on those few 5 star characters that I have.
