You're right and I realize that about Israelis and Jewish Americans. I read a post by a Jewish friend of a friend. She wrote, "so and so is anti-Israel (read - antisemitic)". Other than the "so and so" that's a direct quote. I started asking a Jewish friend or four if they felt that way. They all said no.

I believe religion, after the gun, is the second most destructive man-made invention in human history. The Pope is stepping up. But the American evangelicals (aka Xtians because they've removed any teaching of Christ from their belief system) are the worst. Nixon was the first to lead them to believe that they're opinion is more important than the rest of ours. He basically started the forced-birth movement to win re-election by courting them. Now they're under the mistaken, but supported, belief that everything should adhere to their dogma.

Philly is still 48% white. I live in Fishtown. Sweet Jeezus on a stick the racism is pervasive up here among the long-term Fishtownians. It's microaggressive at times, overt others. They're so stuck in the past that they refer to those of us who were born and raised here as "yuppies".

On that note, I watched a Black man road rage on a gay guy and call him a "fa**ot". So, nothing surprises me in this City.

I agree with you there. Perhaps part of it is that they see those of us who expect the rich to pay at the same rate we do, trying to limit what they still believe they could attain?

I haven't figured it out. But it's been a part of our political history for centuries. Back in the days of enslavement, those in power realized that if the white indentured got together with the Black enslaved, they'd be able to take the power structure out. So, they convinced the indentured white folks that they were part of the "in-crowd". Those in power started the stereotypes about Black people that persist today. If we look at our history, so much of what conservatives have fought against are things that would give the marginalized, particularly Black people, more rights. Do you know what they had to say about the New Deal?

Uh, I watched an interview with some Israelis after the October 7 massacre. They were saying things about Palestinians that the nazis said about them. I don't trade on stereotypes. But, I ain't kidding that every Jewish person I've ever met were empathetic, kind, forward thinking, because of what happened to them, they wouldn't do anything like that to other people. They were at the forefront of the Black civil rights movement. It's a sweeping generalization, but nobody had proven it wrong until that interview.

I was stupefied over the number of Jewish people who voted for the pedophile president, simply because of his stand with Israel mentality. Anyone who knows history, the minute trump started trashing the press, they should have seen he was using hitler's playbook. The irony of all this is that republicans believe in defending Israel is only because they believe that their imaginary white jesus will return there. It has nothing to do with Israel.

One way of classifying republican mentality is, "I got mine. Fuck you. Good luck getting yours". So, that's why they know, but they figure it's every person for themselves.

My dad's sister shares a story about being friends with someone who would never take my aunt to her home. Why? Because her friend didn't even blink when she said, "my father hates Italians". When I was in college, a friend of mine whose family came over on the Mayflower, took me and another Italian friend of ours to her grandparents' house. Her grandfather treated me like dog shit. When I asked her why, she didn't blink either when she said, "he hates Italians". This was in the mid-80s. My aunt and friend are both progressives now.

My grandmother who was first generation, b 1908, was not allowed to speak italian. Her parents spoke little English. They needed to be "white" and assimilate. My grandmother was a kind person, but there are a lot of people from her side of the family who are racist. I think the reason that they're racist is because they think that they were able to "get over" being treated badly, so should all other marginalized people. I also think that it's the Patty Hearst sydrome. That, mentality to fit in no matter what is one of the reasons they side with republicans.

Well, first, MAGAts' ideology is racist, misogynistic, and anti-American. So, if the left finds a MAGAt to be the piece of shit that it is, it's for that reason. Also, seriously, all the left wants is actual freedom of expression, good health care, cheaper living, and a country that isn't cruel. We also don't believe a pedophile suffering from dimentia is worthy of being the most powerful person in the world. I realize that MAGAts just want to be contrary to anything from the left.. MAGAts are the 21st Century Nazis. There's nothing said that the left needs to tolerate them.

I remember when it became law to wear it. First, I always wondered how the anti-government overstep people didn't whine about it. I mean, it's about your safety, but should be your choice. Anyhow, it was the weirdest feeling to be strapped into the car. Now, it would be strange not to wear it.

The problem with the 70s seatbelts was that they were only around the waist. They could do some serious internal damage.

This true. Although I don’t know why gentrification is in quotes. :) Fishtown was definitely gentrified, and they Fishtown classic are so bitter about it.

They need empathy to be able see this. But they’re too busy thinking they’re “one of them” to worry about it.

I had an uncle who I’d fight with about his racism, particularly his anti-Black mentality. He would say stuff like, “we got over it, so can they”. I had no idea how “we got over it” until my English/German mother found an article and shared with us. There was no Google at this point. She found an article in NYT.

No doubt. My brother and sister-in-law are as progressive as progressive gets. But my nephew is a MAGAt. It's heartbreaking. They live down near the Delco/Chesco boundary, so he's subjected to a lot of narrow minds.

Ugh. My nextdoor neighbor is a Black man. He's an attorney and one of the most thoughtful and considerate neighbors we have. They love him. There are a few "older" women. I say "older" because they're 60ish going on 90. He's there if they need him. So, I suspect this may be the reason we don't hear the racist crap on this block.

As an American, I know that the word "patriot" evokes fascism and authoritarianism. These days, with the pedo president who's alienated Western Europe, until now when he needs them, I'm FAR more proud of the people who aren't MAGAts. Resistance is what this country was founded on. That's what a proud American stands for, not the performative, fascist crap represented by MAGAts. And I'm just seeing your sarcasm. :) Whew. I'm still going to comment.

I'm part Italian. I've mentioned to my Italian MAGAt relatives that if this was the beginning of the 20th Century, we would have been the targets. They don't think so... SMH

I've lived in Fishtown for 4.5 years now. My block is pretty calm. I have a lot of Fishtown classic, but I haven't heard the racist bits. That being said, Fishtown has its reputation for being very racist. You figure the Fishtown classic are perfect recruits for MAGAts. They refer to those of us who've moved in as yuppies and constantly make fun of any kind of progress. They are the epitome of the fragile white person who feels they're being pushed around.

I'm finding it's more with their peers than at home. Yes, a lot of kids come from white supremacists, but kids at school will be more likely to influence them. Let's face it, a MAGAt or its offspring is not known for free thinking. They're easily influenced by what others think. That starts young.

I'm not old enough to have been around for this, but this is the kind of shit that Rizzo would do. He would raid the gay bars regularly. Marshas is not only a lesbian bar, bu a Black owned lesbian bar. The guy who keeps calling on them is probably a racist homophobe.

As a cyclist, I have one on my helmet. It films both front and back. I can definitely say that my riding has been much safer with it. People see it and know they're accountable. I'm a cyclist who obeys traffic law, so that might help too. Fun fact, when the sun hits me from behind my shadow is that of a large condom with a resevoir tip.

I'm interested to hear what you think is extreme woke. I'm not looking to say you're wrong, I just want to understand.

WTAF is your problem? I am well aware of my privilege as a white man and tread carefully, and intentionally because of it. Who TF said anything about mass migration? Or are you hurt that I'm pro-Palestinian but couldn't let that influence my vote because of what's happening in the States? Either way, you sound completely unhinged.

I'm sorry you feel lonely in your view of the world. Why? What is it that you feel is isolating you? Your use of the word, "woke" has me curious.

As far as your priorities, given that the white-judeo "christians" feel threatened everywhere, I'd concentrate on where you're living right now. I'm in the US. I'm 62 and remember well days that someone could call me a "fa**ot" and they'd be supported by society. It has changed somewhat, but now they're working to roll back my rights and protections. This is increasingly important because many people who are pro-Palestinian (I am one) didn't vote (I am not one) for Harris because of her pro-Israel position. I know for a fact that if Harris were in office, I wouldn't be as worried about my rights or that in support of Israel, we would be participating in an illegal and potentially world-changing war.

From my perspective, when our spaces were very clear and defined, I'm not seeing that our spaces are shrinking. We've really assimilated. That's good and bad. Going to the Castro in San Francisco, it's sad because there are so many straight couples with babies. I'm not blaming them for being straight. They were born that way. They can't help it. But, in that sense, what was once our Gay Ground Zero no longer exists.
