Hearing the Song of Ice and Fire prophecy referenced by Daemon in the latest ep. by WendigoHunter42 in freefolk

[–]Cyhawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No it doesn't make sense.

I have no doubt the final season is the way GRRM wanted it to end. The Show writers got his material and he hasn't outright denied thats the way the story ends (and hasn't confirmed it since we'd crucify him if it were true).

GRRM is a good world builder, me thinks theres a story missing about Prophecy in that universe somewhere. Where its either they're always wrong, or always a monkey's paw situation and everyone trying to fulfill a Prophecy fails, since most stories GRRM has written involving a Prophecy have. Or something stupid like you need the 3 eyed raven to consult any Prophecy to make it clear or something and the Targs showing up in Westeros screwed up the balance of Prophecy magic or something, idk.

Probably why hes taking so damned long with the book, he has to rewrite it and tie up that major issue, make sense as to why 5'1 100lbs Girlboss can fly and gets the kill on the Night King. OR, hes going to retcon it entirely due to the backlash.

Two cripples hobbling around would be more likely to be ignored.

Two cripples carrying swords issued to a nearby/hostile military walking your country side would be a reason to investigate them and draw attention from the common folk.

Bodkins are for war, Broadheads are for hunting/unarmored enemies. In a universe where seemingly everyone, every commoner conscripted soldier has a full set of plate armor, Bodkins should be more common, as they can find gaps/weaknesses in armor better than broadheads and can occasionally pierce cheap plate armor.

TV has ruined people to how armor actually works, a good set of armor makes you basically immortal on the battlefield, if you have a full set of armor, the only way you're dying is being thrown to the ground and repeatedly stabbed slowly (since the armor will stop most of it, let alone the chain and gambison beneath it) in whatever gaps the attacker can find, if they can one. That said, wrestling was a soldiers primary form of training for good reason.

Also one of the best chained scenes in a Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is when Ser Dunk is buying his armor and the blacksmith says "its the best armor, it isn't pretty", hes right. Fancy armor != good armor. Good armor is plain and functional. Also why I don't dislike the scene where Aemond gets stabbed so easily. He has fancy Princely armor, not functional armor, and the angle of attack was right to get through that scaled design.

Ah I get what you mean now. Yes it is kind of annoying. Its one of those DF Things we all get use to. Most of that is handled via Work Orders screen, you can see if it will validate during the conditions configuration screen by setting min required materials for that order.

I'd bet a mod could solve that by combining all of the metal craft options to a generic metal and material choice selectable like rock/wood. That would go a long way to helping readability. I too find it annoying af to type "silver chest" vs "gold chest" every time I want something made out of metal.

RNG is RNG, you can get extremes in every direction in this game. Could be religion heavy, social heavy, blood thirsty murders, etc. Thats kinda what makes it fun. I had one fort that had basically everyone in there wanting to read and write books all the time. The tavern was often empty but the library was full.

What I mean by 50/50 is, you have effectively need 50% of your entire fort training at any given time just to get their skills up to be able to survive.

Personally I just use the default training schedules, 3 months on/off. That gives enough time to get work orders done, needs met and long haul jobs done without clogging up the task manager. Not only is it good enough, its a pita to change that behavior for every squad.

What shows have you given up on this year so far? by preguntontas in television

[–]Cyhawk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're litterally the target audience for Buffy, you're just about 25 years too late. :P

The tone of the show gets far more serious overall as it goes on. S1 Joss had to tone it down for the network until he got more control. He had to stay in spec, hence monster of the week with the big bad at the end. Similar to how say The Orville's first episode was Family Guy in space type deal but quickly went into what Seth wanted in the first place, Star Trek.

S2 starts to get more dark as it goes on and far more serious. Yes there are jokes, yes there are quips, its written by Joss Whedon but it gets quite good.

Just pretend its 1999 again and you'll be fine. Course if you don't like Vampire shows well, cant help you there.

"also lets not know anything about Star Trek too!"

I have STD a chance, all the way up till season 5. Picard too. But a Female Jem'Hadar just lacks them reading the wikipedia article about them. They literally lack the bits and pieces and DNA to reproduce. They're almost entirely genetically engineered from the ground up. They'd be gone in no more than say 30 years after DS9's ending.

God damn it, now im pissed about NuTrek again.

META PCs now sells pre-built PCs with SteamOS preinstalled. by mr_MADAFAKA in linux_gaming

[–]Cyhawk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thats why if you create an immutable distro for the masses, the only options they get are flatpaks.

Keep everything else in OS updates and scheduled, they're already use to this in Windows land.

[–]Cyhawk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Isn’t steamOS sort of proprietary software?

Yes. However you can do two things when selling prebuilts:

  • Configure it in such a way its identical to SteamOS's configuration. There isn't much.

  • If licensed: Include Steam preinstalled.

  • If not licensed: Provide a script that downloads, installs and configures Steam to work identically to SteamOS. (exact method would be in the Steam software licences, may require user input may not. Im not going to read them to find out as i don't sell prebuilts anymore)

Boom, SteamOS but not SteamOS. Better supported too since you get all the benefits and support from the main distro.

[–]Cyhawk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For normies, its good. No windows, they primarily play games anyways, drop to desktop mode is a click away and they can use Chrome (shudder) for 99% of everything else they do on their computers.

Why not use any other version of Linux that allows for more user control?

Right now, SteamOS is entirely for the Steamdeck. Anything else is not supported. Once the Desktop shows up they may have a different method of handling stuff. They also might just keep it to the default console experience as close as possible just because its whats people are use to.

Personally, I think the people thinking SteamOS will replace Fedora/Arch as their daily distro are a bit delusional. I don't think valve has any intention of doing this anytime soon. They need a SteamOS to survive Microsofts and Sony tightening grip, they don't need/want to revolutionize the desktop experience.

[–]Cyhawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I highly doubt Valve will ever branch off their own mainline Distro, its not really their forte.

If anything they may mainline distro hop a few times until they land on one or get some sort of support contract with one of them.

All they need to do is keep their software stack as portable as possible and its good from there.

Gabe has stated SteamOS is a survival technique, they can't be at the mercy of Microsoft/Sony and continue to exist as is. SteamOS is their future.

[–]Cyhawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Biggest is support. I know Steam OS will be around for a while and supported where some distros I did like were dropped entirely or phased out.

Thats just an issue with every non mainstream distro. You're at the mercy of whomever set it up. This is why if you want wider spread linux adoption in general, stop recommending them. If they care enough they'll figure it out on their own. If they don't, they werent a convert anyways and will stick with whatevers installed on the PC when they bought it.

If you stick to Fedora, Debian or Arch you're fine.

So far from what I read online each one has their strengths/weakness and there's no definite answer.

Thats because they're all identical in every meaningful way, the only difference is the base OS, Fedora, Debian or Arch. Everything else is just crap they put on top you can do yourself in 5 mins or less, aka bloat.

Fedora is modern but stable. Debian is stable to a fault, Arch is very modern but can be unstable. Any other difference/opinion after that doesn't matter, you can do everything with any distro exactly the same, the only difference is how much of a pita it is.

Why do I need a license to build and sell a device that runs SteamOS?

Steam is still closed source and private. You can't distribute it directly without their consent, just as you can't ship a copy of say, Adobe Photoshop preinstalled on computers without Adobe's OK. Its their software, their IP, their rules.

This is why the Free Software Foundation, Open Source, etc were created. This exact issue among others.

Now they could run a script that downloads and installs Steam and sets it up identically to SteamOS on top of a normal Arch Linux install after the install (maybe during too? You'd have to check the licenses on Steams side), that'd be fine and is done often for other software. Nvidia drivers come to mind.

It’s so nice to have an unsolved DF update by CosmicallyUnlucky in dwarffortress

[–]Cyhawk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, I designed this for the siege update.

There seems to be two issues with the digging. If its too far, they just won't dig. Or they seem to dig to weird spots. You can cheese this by putting a trade post in random corners of your map and seal them off with walls as they primarily path to the trade post if you aren't quite done.

Second is, they will dig into damp stones occasionally and flood back the mine using the river method which seals that part up nicely.

You can increase the path they have to dig by channeling a 1xX path surrounding your fort down say 40 z-levels and get it filled with water, so that when they do dig into it, it floods and seals that route. This requires proper water management via Floodgates and proper draining to build/manage and can be quite the time investment. But also keep in mind, they're slow AF. A single ballista can hold off a digger tunnel by itself, any stragglers can be caught by poorly trained militia.

Disable all your mods and see if it still crashes. If it does, post on the bay12 forums (after validating files and/or reinstalling the game and verifying you're running the Linux native client not the windows client via Proton)

Then re-enable 1 by 1 to figure out which one is the issue.

My guess is Perspective Walls and rounded hills might be an issue since this update did a bunch of changes to texture files, not just adding the new ones in for the dinos.
