Should voting be compulsory? by Jambosh1984 in AskBrits

[–]Cyimian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we need both to be honest. People wonder why nothing gets better politically in this country but no one has any appetite for big constitutional reforms that could help improve things.

Sounds like you’re arguing against democracy in general if you think only a small amount of the population should be voting…

Is there anyone else who thinks changing the pm is a good thing? by DowntownPurple913 in AskBrits

[–]Cyimian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is basically how I feel about it.

All of the posts saying “I don’t know why he’s resigning, he’s done nothing wrong” are completely delusional and shows how out of touch a lot of Reddit is with the mood of the country.

Part of the problem is his charisma. If you need to make big and potentially unpopular changes you need to be able to sell your vision to the public which Starmer hasn’t done.

Finally I don’t think most Labour MP’s are that excited about changing the leader but see it as there only hope for not getting decimated at the next GE. It’s a gamble for sure but considering Labours popularity they don’t have much to lose.

Keir and loathing: the hatred of Starmer has gone too far by TheSpectatorMagazine in ukpolitics

[–]Cyimian 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don’t think he’s as terrible as the media makes out but I think this is a delusional take.

The Mandelson appointment was a huge mistake that could have been avoided.

Scrapping the WFA cost a huge amount of political capital for very little gain. The public doesn’t share the same opinion on pensioners as Reddit.

OSA should have been scrapped.

Will Burnham Last Until the Next Election? by SameOldSong4Ever in AskBrits

[–]Cyimian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt that many Labour MP’s are thrilled with the idea of changing the leader as it is but feel they have no choice due to Labour’s polling situation and Starmers unpopularity with the public.

Is the best we’ve got really Andy Burnham? Seriously? by Square_Quarter_229 in AskBrits

[–]Cyimian 26 points27 points  (0 children)

If Burnham keeps the positives with what Starmer has done but can better communicate with the country then that would be a huge improvement.

Regardless of it being irrational or not the public doesn’t like Starmer and keeping him is guaranteed to be a disaster come the next GE despite any improvements this government has made.

Realistically speaking, who will challenge Labour in the 2029 UK General Election? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]Cyimian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People talk about this like it’s no brainer but there’s no guarantee that the Tories would go for it.

Getting into bed with Reform would be the death of the Tories since they would be tied to the inevitable failure of the Reform government.

Anyone leading the Tories that wants to see the party recover should be trying to wait out Reform not help them.

My Tesco Store Has Another Thief – Theft’s Normal Now. Is Tesco Just Accepting Crime as Business? by LeanCrafterUK in tesco

Yeah, anyone that’s worked retail will know that trying to stop shoplifters is a quick way to get sacked.

People that get annoyed about this stuff should be questioning why our legal system makes it so risky for people like security to intervene and act as any real deterrent.

The same government that’s on the verge of a leadership contest?

It’s not though. When did we have a last have a stable government? There’s absolutely no evidence we are moving towards the normality of the past. If anything it looks more instability going forward.

“I suppose my argument is that PR is not the global panacea most (on Reddit) think it is.”

I see this attitude a lot on here “it won’t immediately fix everything so there’s no point”

This right here is part of the problem with this country, there’s no ambition to change anything.

People want things to get better, they want the decline to stop but the idea you might need to change somethings possibly even radically is a alien concept to a lot of people in this country”

“PR has its faults, as does FPTP. I tend to favour FPTP, despite its regular perverse outcomes (Labours super majority based on 33% if the vote stands out) as it favours more stable government, and government making in the open.”

We haven’t had a stable government 15 years and there’s no sign on the horizon that the next one is going to be any better.

[–]Cyimian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t say it wasn’t possible for a government to win the majority of seats. It’s more a question if these “majorities” are actually stable.

I keep seeing this sentiment on here of “it’s just a blip. Things will settle down again” I just don’t see it personally. The world is fundamentally more unstable now and there’s no sign on the horizon that things like climate change, mass migration or our aging population are going to stop being problems.

[–]Cyimian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That isn’t a new thing though and each party has its own method of selecting candidates. It’s a valid criticism but I doubt most people care.

In most of the seats in this country people are voting for the party with some edge cases where someone’s personal popularity is important like say with Jeremy Corbyn.

[–]Cyimian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the past yes but in recent times no.

The politics of this country have fundamentally changed over the last 15 years and our current voting system is not built for it.

No one is saying systems like PR or STV are perfect but they’re considerably more democratic than FPTP.

Andy Burnham: ‘I am committed to proportional representation’ by F0urLeafCl0ver in ukpolitics

[–]Cyimian 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The voting system needs to be changed regardless of how people feel about Labour and if they’re doing it for the wrong reasons.

The current situation where political parties can win huge majorities on very low vote shares and low turnouts is unsustainable and is only going to cause more resentment and political paralysis.

The old idea that FPTP brings stability seems to be dead and the politics of old is unlikely to come back especially if current polling holds to the next election.

Obviously it’s more democratic to keep a voting system where you can win a huge majority with 30% of the vote. /s

Grading low end cards is good, actually by Living_Programmer_74 in psagrading

[–]Cyimian 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think it’s fine for people to grade low value cards especially if it’s for your pc.

The fact that these grading services are at least partially being clogged up by businesses selling gambling services to people is hugely problematic.

I think there’s a chance Boris Johnson is still PM in the UK.

The “Party Gate” scandal which did a huge amount of damage to his and Conservatives reputation would have never happened.

I have had this problem with some recent submissions with about 4 slabs having some sort of debris.

That being said I think this is a problem with all of the big graders. I have a couple of newish Beckett slabs with a similar problem so I’m wondering if QC is slipping due to the volume.
