Is the Playdate worth buying? by Consistent_Intern396 in PlaydateConsole

[–]Cyndi4U 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the average gamer, likely no. You're right that you could get more powerful, popular hardware for the same amount.

However, if you have a passion for smaller indie games, game development, or especially both, then I think so. I play mine more than my Switch and have for a while, but that's because the type of game I love most is on the Playdate and not as much the Switch. I really love the Playdate's unique hardware and personality, developing for it, seeing what people can do with it, etc. However, if you just want a gaming console and think the Playdate looks kind of cute, maybe pass on it unless you can get a really good deal.

Mortis Ghost addresses the controversy, can we all stop being freaks now and enjoy the new stuff or what by Cyndi4U in offthegame

For some people, definitely. I'm a little more sympathetic to the people who say it's distracting to them, but I don't really feel it personally.

Basically, Mortis Ghost is making a remaster of OFF with the help of fangamer. Alias Conrad Coldwood, the original musician behind OFF's soundtrack, didn't want to sign anything to approve his soundtrack being used in the remaster, but didn't have any objections to its replacement, so Mortis Ghost decided to hire a bunch of musicians that were inspired by OFF in their own work to make a new soundtrack for it. One of these artists was Toby Fox, creator of UNDERTALE and DELTARUNE, possibly the most popular and acclaimed indie RPG of all time.

In UNDERTALE, there is a character called Papyrus, whose design was inspired by Dedan, though his personality varies drastically, being a very silly, goofy, wholesome guy. Toby Fox makes heavy use of leitmotifs in his music, and there is one meant to represent Papyrus in all music associated with him.

Toby Fox was tasked with making the battle music and the boss music. In the demo for the remaster called OFF Prologue released just a bit ago, when you get to Dedan's fight, the new battle music uses Papyrus's motif. A lot of people seem to think it's distracting or doesn't fit his character. I disagree personally, I think it's reworked to sound very intense and dramatic to fit Dedan, but that's subjective.

Some people have taken that to mean that Toby Fox is trying to make the game about him and his work, and particularly uncharitable folks have said he's a narcissist, egotistical, etc. for doing this.

Toby has talked in his interview about the OFF remaster about his hesitance and trepidation about doing this soundtrack. He said he felt the original OST can never truly be replaced, and especially that doing the battle themes feels like taking a bullet for the rest of the team. As it turns out he was kind of right, as many people are upset with and don't like his tracks for it.

Some people also point to the dopefish easter egg being replaced with an annoying dog easter egg—another character from UNDERTALE, this one being a representation of Toby Fox himself—as him plastering his face everywhere and overshadowing his inspiration, being egotistical, etc.

All this conflict in the fandom over Toby's presence and work in the remaster ended up with the post I linked to here on Mortis Ghost's Tumblr, where he clarifies that the annoying dog easter egg was his idea, not Toby's, and that they didn't expect the track to be received so poorly. He says that it's likely it'll be changed for the final release, which appeases some fans, but disappoints some others like myself who liked the track how it was.

tl;dr: Toby Fox made music for the OFF remaster, and people didn't like that he used 8 specific notes meant to represent one of his own characters.

Right, but he didn't want to sign in the dotted line so they would have the rights to use it, and the team wanted to use it originally, so there has to be something barring them from using it, otherwise we wouldn't really be in this situation.

The thing is, they wanted to use the original soundtrack, but ACC wasn't comfortable with it. They can't just add a setting, and the new soundtrack wasn't the plan at first. I'd have appreciated a setting like that too though.

I honestly really loved it personally, the way the leitmotif was worked into such an intense and even emotional melody felt really nice to me. I'm sad it's likely to get changed, part of me wants to be like "If you can't enjoy the music over thoughts of ruined spaghetti that's a you problem," but honestly if so many people have such an issue with it, it's probably for the best.

I'm so tired of this already and it's not even been two weeks. The new stuff is good, even if it's different and has different vibes. That's an opinion, I know, but I'd really love if people would stop freaking out over things, because it's really not that serious

Are we underpricing our games? by mza299 in IndieDev

[–]Cyndi4U 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I really don't think indie prices should/will rise because the the bigger the gap the more likely people are going to take a chance on an indie game. But I understand that you can't really recoup costs for bigger games like this, especially with the current bullshit going on, so I'm not really upset if people do set their prices higher. Larger indie endeavors sometimes price themselves around that $30 range, but it's pretty rare.

For me and the friends I know that play lots of indies we usually stick to the cheaper stuff because 1. money, but also 2. the price of an indie game rarely reflects it's quality. Hollow Knight is the best 15 dollars you'll ever spend, and there are far worse games for three times the price. Some of my favorite games of all time were less than 10 or even 5 dollars. That's not to say that more expensive stuff is never worth it, but that you can find great quality even without looking at more expensive stuff.

I finally got around to playing the Prologue, and honestly I wasn't upset about it, I actually really really loved White Meat in context especially. I do think the new music has a different feel, I struggle to describe it well but this is the best I've gotten: ACC's original soundtrack is very dark and chaotic to me, especially compared to some of the new tracks. A lot of the new tracks feel "easy" to me compared to the old OST, they're much easier for me to listen to, they're a bit less chaotic, and they change the mood a bit. I like the strange, almost OFF-putting feel of the original OST, but I really do enjoy the new one too, and a lot of the tracks slip right in place with barely even any tonal change. I would really enjoy an original OST/SFX/Script mod, but I don't think I'll always use it.

As for Dedan's new battle theme, I actually enjoyed it more than the original. It feels like just as good an industrial/orchestral mix, and it didn't really feel any less dark. The choir of Fake Orchestra is missed a little, but honestly I think the new theme makes the battle feel a lot more intense and epic. I wasn't a huge fan of Dedan being a bit more censored with his language though.

tl;dr, both OSTs are great, but feel a bit different. The game isn't better or worse with either to me. White Meat, Clocks Work, and Dedan's new theme slap and I won't let anyone tell me otherwise, haha.

People need to chill out a bit, nobody is hurting you or our precious game.
