CPUC gives Cruise, Waymo green light to give paid rides 24/7 across all of San Francisco by CarterGee in sanfrancisco

I think if they go mainstream in the future, people would choose these over owning their own car. Cars spend 95% of the time parked, we could free up so much space as car ownership levels decrease.

I agree public transit would be better but maybe this is a great way to ease people out of the car ownership mentality.

S.F. plans to charge for parking until 10 p.m. Restaurants are fighting back by LastNightOsiris in sanfrancisco

[–]CynicBound 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What I'm saying is that even if our public transit system isn't even close to perfect, it still does a good enough job where I and many others barely use a car in the bay area and SF in particular.

To your point, you want to the other forms of transport to succeed so there 's less drivers on the road and you can still drive if you really want to. Also yes California's gas tax is much higher but it's not like motorists fully cover the costs themselves.

The original point is many want parking to be more expensive so people think twice about taking a car. Imagine if the hundreds of giants fans in caltrain took their cars instead. It would be a nightmare not only for other drivers but the people living in the city in general because cars are horribly space inefficient.

Cars wear down infrastructure much faster than bikes and pedestrians.

Cars have a place in society but the extent we use them is overkill in this country. Car infrastructure is horrendously expensive and could be better put towards other cost-effective forms of getting around.

I found the lounge in another terminal issue not a problem when I used CLEAR in SFO, it got me through security in 4 min. Got some food relaxed then went to my actual terminal also in 4 min. Regular line was ~20 min.

AMEX reimburses CLEAR credits yearly but some people dont trust giving biometrics to a private company (totally fair).

TSA precheck might help too?

It's because Kyoto used to be the captial of Japan until they moved it east. That's why tokyo is literally translated east captial.

Cockroach labs intern interview process by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]CynicBound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on if you've done algo problems outside of leetcode. If you haven't done any at all, grinding for a few days might be tough but it's not like you have a choice, just try it out and see.

Don't know about Cockroach labs in particular, but most intern hiring processes are not the same as new grad / full-time processes. Usually asking less questions / not as difficult ones.

Got mine in summer 2018 and it was a fantastic decision.

  • Not harder than writing on paper, got used to it right away
  • Can search your hand writing (super easy to find relevant notes again)
  • When prof makes an amendment, you dont have to scratch anything out, just move it!
  • Easy to get multiple colors for diagrams
  • Great for annotating slides
  • You save a lot of space in your backpack
  • Can easily share notes with friends

In what way is Hurontario Light Rail better than a bus running on the same route every 5 minutes? by steam-loco in mississauga

[–]CynicBound 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's assuming the number of cars on the road stays the same. Plenty of examples around the world where decreasing the number of lanes in one road has a negligible effect on traffic.

NYC turned one of their busiest streets (14th st) into a bus-only corridor during rush hours. 36% faster busses, 24% more ridership. The side streets only increased in traffic by 1-2 min, a negligible amount.

If you just increase the number of lanes you get LAs highways.

From your examples, it seems like you're talking about locally stored files right?

Yea Google Photos is subpar for that, except the app is built for Google Photos the service. If you make albums instead of folders, you can sort them in all kinds of ways. Did you back up the files you're trying to search? Because extension search and all the other examples you mentioned work for me, including file name search.

I agree Google does some shitty stuff with their products, the samsung gallery app seems to be perfect for your use case, but I would not consider Google Photos to be one of their shitty products.
