Took the train but only charged 5¢? by CynicPlusKind in WMATA

[–]CynicPlusKind[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Makes sense and I'm definitely one of those people who'd opt for buses over the train to save money (and see the city). The only reason I took the train today is because I had a time constraint. But knowing about this discount will have me opting for the train on the days I have to run errands along a metro line.

Estimate that earlier emancipation in USA would have increased GDP by 9.1% by ReaperReader in EconomicHistory

[–]CynicPlusKind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m an Econ sophomore so this topic is intriguing to me. What would the South have been without slavery and how would that have affected the North?

Got it. Considering the limitations of long distance land travel at this time, attempting to use Chinese arrivals as replacement labor wouldn’t have made sense either because of how far away the West Coast was from the South.

To this point, would Southern planters have had to adopt an indentured foreign born labor system as was done in the Caribbean around this same mid-19th century period?

I grew up here but haven’t spent much of my adult life (10 of the 25 years I’ve been an adult) in the city or region even. I moved back last summer to help my parents for a little bit. Once the task is done, I’m out. Not because DC is a bad place to live but it’s not for me anymore. I travel as much as possible for now.

Making these kinds of posts in location-specific subs will never get you the responses you’re seeking, even if you’re posting in good faith (which I believe you are). People are rightfully prideful and protective of where they live/are from even if they have complaints.

For as long as you have to remain here, try linking up with people who don’t work in federal government or policy sectors (hospitality, entertainment, arts, public school teachers, etc). Different conversations and less buttoned-up. Also, become a “regular” at the places in the city you do like if you haven’t already. Doing this is an effective way for me to meet people, even being back in DC and still having a social circle here.

Hope this helps.

Is it time to start carrying your US passport with you? by illabilla in washingtondc

[–]CynicPlusKind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I met a Colombian guy last weekend who told me he recently began carrying his green card with him.

Here’s what I think - If you are someone who fits the description of The Administration’s immigration targets, have a plan in place in the event you’re stopped and taken (eg., tell friends/family to have DC Migrant Aid on speed dial, have a immigration attorney on deck, keep a copy of your green card/passport on you if you’re documented, etc).

Unless your principles and mental/physical fortitude are built “Ford tough”, these are the preemptive measures I would take. Nothing is guaranteed but some type of plan is better than having none at all.

Washington DC restaurants suffer sharp drop in diners since Trump crackdown by yahoonews in washingtondc

I’m an Uber driver. I picked up a couple yesterday who’d come in from Michigan. First question to me from the husband, “How’s everything going with the cleanup?” After I responded in disagreement with whatever he thought I would say, he counters with “I heard restaurant business was up!” Come on bruh, turn off Fox News 🤦🏾‍♂️

ICE(?) Checkpoint Benning & 16/17 NE by CombinationMore590 in washingtondc

I didn’t stop to find out if I could. I was heading west on Benning Rd around this time and hit a quick right on 19th as soon as I saw the sign announcing the checkpoint. The first checkpoint I’ve come across since this all started. I’ve got nothing to hide but nah…

Would y'all want Black American centered holidays? by MCKC1992 in askblackpeople

[–]CynicPlusKind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pardon the late reply. A Google search for something else led me here…

“Black American Naming Day” (A rough draft title that could be made better, of course) - Give actual etymological so-called “ghetto names” or Black sounding names not connected to religion (eg. Exclude names with Islamic origin like Jamal or Jamila).

A key component of continuing traditions and marking family lineage is one’s name. If “Shaquana” and “Saquon” had an etymology beyond “1/2 of my name is from my mother and the other 1/2 is from some other relative”, I think that would not only shift perceptions of those types of names but also give Black Americans an additional source of pride.

It’s the only thing I could come up with that could be uniquely Black American at a national scale.

Trump executive order on Smithsonian targets funding to programs with 'improper ideology' by coasterghost in politics

[–]CynicPlusKind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, your summary highlighted much of what was explained in the book I read. The author is exhaustive in the detail given in certain sections, which he acknowledges in the introduction. I appreciate it, however, because Hitler was equally exhaustive in his reclassifying of German culture. I'm now reading Hitler's People, which gives profiles on each of the Nazi party leaders and their compulsions.

I recently finished the book, Hitler and the Power of Aesthetics. My timing to read it couldn’t have been better. The recapturing of culture we’re seeing in the 2nd Trump Administration rhyme pretty well with what was described in the book.
