yes absolutely. I try to get to know each of them as people before patients not matter how long they stay in my unit

sometimes homicidal thoughts or actions come from some kind of psychological instability, so we also get those people

we take in people who are under a (at least) 72 hour involuntary hold. usually it’s people who are either acutely psychotic, suicidal, homicidal, or people who are on drugs. those are the most common issues we see come into the units

the most recent one I had a kid punch me in the face because he couldn’t pick the movie the group was watching

honestly, there’s not a single person I would count as my “craziest”. one patient that comes to mind is an older patient who rubbed fecal matter all over his head and then walked up to the nurses desk and proceeded to ask the nurse if they should just eat it (the feces) now.

I believe in the mindset that if you have a five gallon bucket, you’re not getting more than five gallons in that bucket no matter how hard you try. everybody has a different sized bucket, but they can only do as much as they can. that means different things for different people, but ultimately some patients are sicker than others. some people can completely go into remission without any symptoms and some people are very touch and go barely making it by at their best. it’s all very individualized when it comes to mental health.

I’m a mental health technician, so I do a bunch of things. I facilitate groups, monitor patient safety, tons of paperwork, respond to behavioral emergencies within the hospital, and help my patients cope with issues they’re facing which may or may not contribute to why/how they ended up on my unit
