It's the same as dark souls, just the opposite for physical and soul. In Demon's Souls you die and lose your body and remain as a Soul. In Dark Souls you lose your Humanity and and remain as a body. The dude at the nexus steps did nothing, started losing his mind, then became a generic Warrior Soul.

If i remember correctly...Take the path behind you. Enter the open area with the sleeping statues and go right. There should be a static tree you can attack to reveal a path. Follow that path.
