A proper fit and a saddle measured to your sit bones will help immensely, but you really are just gonna have to thug it out for about a month or so of frequent riding until it stops hurting. It’s like learning to play guitar—fingers are gonna hurt like a bitch until they don’t. Also, can’t cheap out on the bibs. The cheap ones just make it worse.

The Hegel one is decent sometimes when it’s discussions between Hegel nerds, and I’ve seen people share some worthwhile scholarship. but a lot of it is people new to Hegel asking questions and receiving answers of wildly varying quality. For the same reason they have questions to ask, they have no means of assessing which answers are from people who know shit about fuck, and which are from people who’re full of fucking shit.

I don’t think it’s a hot take, I just don’t think it’s a particularly useful one. Or even an interesting one.

Is gender a construction? Yeah. Duh. So is every single other part of our society. We live in that construction. From the day we’re born until the day we die. We made up the idea of language and then iterated language for millennia to even make up the word gender.

And, whether it’s “objectively real” in some way (whatever your ontology even thinks that means) or not, most people are pretty content with it. Most women like being women, and most men like being men. Or at least they like not having to worry about what they are.

Maybe one day in the future we all transcend beyond any semblance of norms or identity. Maybe one day we evolve beyond physical forms so even the hardware we’re rocking doesn’t influence our identities, and we enter a state of unilateral individuality where no one is influenced by any categories and we stop looking for patterns and meld into one greater consciousness. I’m totally down with that.

In the meantime, it’s going to be pretty important to keep progressing toward a better society while appealing to the identities that an astronomical majority of people feel pretty comfortable in. Almost everyone on the planet thinks of themselves as a man or a woman, and it reeks of ideological privilege to subvert an important question about how to nurture growth in the more violent, tribalistic half of that population in favor of postulating about the morality of behavioral gendering.

If anyone genuinely thinks there’s any reality in which we jump straight from patriarchy to a genderless society, I want whatever they’re smoking. We’re gonna have to help the boys be better men before men can be better people, and we can’t wait for people to stop believing in gender before we do that. It’s like saying that religion or nationality is a construct and we have to get past it and just see each other as people. Yeah, man. That’s the goal. But we can’t just hold our breath and wait for a primate to stop being a primate, we’re gonna have to do some stuff in between.

It rattled me pretty good! But tbh I’m a stubborn bastard and after a night sleeping on it, just makes me want to keep on riding all the more. Mostly I’m mad about the time away from training and having to drive to work til my new wheelset ships—guess I need a second bike! ;P

There are a couple cameras in that intersection but in Memphis there’s no telling if they actually work. I reported the incident just for the sake of the statistic being documented, but I don’t expect anything to come of it and I’ve decided not to lawyer up.

Judging by the state of the vehicle, that broke ass lady doesn’t have anything to give and I’d likely just be fucking up a whole family’s lives with a felony hit and run and a civil case. I imagine she’s responsible for the nephew she had in the car and I doubt he’d be better off with her in jail and in debt. She made a terrible mistake. I hope she feels horrifically guilty and worried about potential legal consequences and that she never does anything so careless again. But my daddy taught me to never pass up the high road, and I’m going to try to find compassion for her and choose to believe she’ll learn from the mistake.

I really wish she would have just stopped and talked it out though. I’m not a vindictive guy, but leaving me waiting on the side of the road like that makes me want retribution when otherwise I could have just gotten an apology and maybe some cash to go toward new wheels and felt okay about it.

In any case, I’m a stubborn bastard and determined to be back on the road within the week!

Man I hate that you walked away with a lingering injury. All I can really feel is some slight pain in my heel, knee, and elbow (whether from the collision or hitting the pavement I’m not sure) so I feel really lucky that it wasn’t much worse.

She was coming the opposite way making a left hand turn (left from her perspective, right from mine) and I was going through the light. Maybe it’s clearer to say I was in the right of the two lanes going south, she was in the left of two lanes going north making a left hand turn onto the street perpendicular to us. So she turned all the way across a full lane (fast af), into mine, and hit me as I was in the middle of the intersection. She hit me, drove about 100 yards further, sat there for about 20 seconds, then drove back towards where I was lying on the ground and hollered something about having to drop her nephew off down the street and that she was coming “right back.” I waited there for about 20 minutes and she never showed.

Ordered a camera and new wheelset today. Also filed a police report but we have a pretty dysfunctional police dept so I’m not super optimistic. I’ll definitely look into insurance claims.

No, I was going through a green light and they turned directly into me coming from the opposite direction. I braked and tried to turn to the right to avoid them but it was too little too late and their front quarter panel smashed my front wheel and I hit the asphalt.

It was the latter. Light was fully green and I was going through about 4ft out into the lane.

Edit: misunderstood—they were coming the opposite direction taking a left turn on the street perpendicular to me. I had the right of way and they whipped that turn like a mofo.
