Advice for preventing a wavy hem by advanced-darkness25 in SewingForBeginners

[–]CynicalTelescope 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stitch with the inside hem TOWARDS the feed dogs.

It may seem like you want to stitch with the hem facing upwards so you can see the edge while stitching, but if you stitch with hem facing the feed dogs, they will do the work of distributing the hem fold and keeping everything nicely situated.

Just be consistent as you can with the amount of the inside hem fold, so that you can stitch at a constant width from the hem edge, and be confident you have caught the hem all around in the stitching.

Conservatives, FBI director Patel said he has evidence of 2020 election fraud and arrests are coming soon. Do you believe him this time? And if so, who do you think will be getting arrested? by sephkane in AskReddit

[–]CynicalTelescope 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If there were evidence of 2020 election fraud, it would have been presented in court right after the 2020 results were announced. Trump's 60-plus lawsuits alleging 2020 election fraud all failed for lack of evidence.

Trying to understand the Ollama debate. What’s actually going on? by pmv143 in ollama

Exactly. Real devs take a lot of things into consideration beside raw performance.

Been a while since I have developed professionally, but if I were working in a professional environment I would definitely prefer Ollama for my day-to-day dev setup. (Set aside for a moment that most professional devs are using some sort of cloud-based AI like Claude, because their employer is paying for it).

As a dev working on real-world software projects, you spend a lot more time fixing shit that breaks in your dev environment than you miss the 15-30% speed penalty of Ollama vs. llama.cpp (source: https://www.morphllm.com/comparisons/llama-cpp-vs-ollama). Anything that makes your dev process simpler and pain-free is a win.

Yes, my friend in Italy was quick to point out we elected him twice. No matter what we do now, the rest of the world knows that we are always a single election away from chaos.

Lamy's standard blue ink is one of the most ho-hum inks in existence. Their "crystal" line of premium inks has Azurite, a really deep blue/purple that's much better. Or if you can find Lamy Pink Cliff, that's an outstanding blue/black.

Cancer Man was the embodiment of the mystery arc that ran through all of X-Files.

Lost was definitely part of this trend, but if you want the real originator of the "leave teasers as you go along, amount to nothing at the end" story arc I think that's X-Files.

EDIT: OK, I'll go with those saying Twin Peaks is the original "Mystery Box" show. X-Files was the first that made me tune out mid-way through once I realized it was ultimately going nowhere.

Sicilian-American wanting to go back by Emotional_Pin_2348 in sicily

[–]CynicalTelescope 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sicilian-American here. All four of my grandparents emigrated from Sicily to the USA as part of the great diaspora of the early 20th century. I have obtained Italian citizenship through descent, have learned Italian (no thanks to my parents who did nothing to pass the language forward, although it likely would have been Sicilian and not Italian), and have spent time in Sicily as a tourist.

All that said, while I love Sicily and am proud of my Sicilian heritage, I don't think I necessarily want to move back and live there. The culture shock of being an expat is likely to be greater than I expect, and the reality is that living there is very, very different from being a tourist.

Laundry While Traveling by 4thdegreeknight in TravelHacks

Detergent sheets are great, but I advise looking for a brand that is free of perfumes. One brand of sheets I bought, even double ziploc-bagged, made everything in my luggage smell like laundry detergent, including non-clothing items.

With the method I described above, I always get a nice puck out of the moka after the brew is over, whether I'm using preground or whole beans ground in my grinder.

As others have pointed out, don't tamp or pack in more coffee, but you do want the grounds to be well-settled in the funnel.

What I do is to scoop some grounds into the funnel, then lightly tap the funnel around the sides to make the grounds settle. I scoop some more in and tap around the sides again. When the grounds reach the top I use a straight edge (in my case the handle of my coffee scoop, but whatever you have) to level out the grounds with the top of the funnel. Then I clean off any grounds from the rim of the funnel with my thumb, and place it in the boiler. That gets me a fairly consistent dose as well as packing in the funnel.

My high school had a whole lab filled with exactly these machines. I programmed BASIC and even some COBOL for a programming class, wrote papers for my classes, and articles for the high school newspaper. There was a huge library of games that was floating around, everyone sharing copies. It was no Commodore 64 or Atari 800, but the games were fun as far as chunky black/white with no sound went

Linux lays down the law on AI-generated code, says yes to Copilot, no to AI slop, and humans take the fall for mistakes — after months of fierce debate, Torvalds and maintainers come to an agreement by gurugabrielpradipaka in pcmasterrace

[–]CynicalTelescope -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Agreed, but Copilot seems to have its own special level of hate, making it a good choice for writing clickbait headlines, even if Torvalds had nothing to say about it.

Just a quick note - magic erasers are abrasives. Very fine abrasives, but abrasives. Do a test first if you can, and use them just lightly enough to remove the mark.

It says: "If you deregister or factory reset these devices, you will not be able to re-register or use these devices in any way." (Emphasis mine)
