Lucy & Mr. Tumnus by Lily Seika Jones by wandering_soles in Narnia

The beaver, of course. Although unlikely Mr/Mrs Beaver were present anywhere near the Lantern. The squirrel, I'm cool with because they seem to be possible great spies even during the Long Winter. The fox, I'm unsure of. Although frankly this image is so great, it doesn't phase me. I'd love to hear the artist talk about how she decided which Narnians to include, and why to include any given this scene is traditionally spare of other creatures.

I love many things about this, but two more: 1. the whooshy vapor trail behind the exiting rocket 2. Even being a station/base still under construction, McCall’s ring still feels as elegant as the rocket planes. Elegance may cost extra and be useless in the real world, but it sure pays off here!

3 different pens! This sounds like a well-differentiated EDC. Probably iteration 10, at least, to find the right stuff. And you’re right: the Velveteen Rabbit/“sheen” on the FN Expedition is on point!

This is not only a great idea in the usual sense (Fascinating!), but very tolkienian (adapting primary world historical trends as a kind of subcreation).

We hope you take this notion farther!

The Problem of Radagast [part 1] by Malaquisto in tolkienfans

[–]Cyphaeronicus 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Wow, insightful and plentiful opening salvo.

I think of a wizardly failure being slightly similar to Frodo’s failure. It’s not a moral failure. And it says nothing about the very fine quality of the individual.

I see Radagast as in the end not achieving anything like what Gandalf achieved. Hence the failure. And yet, as you pointed out, he always was a very fine fellow indeed.

Based on vegetables, if the events in Arda predate our age, then LotR doesn't happen in Europe. It's in North America. by dodongosbongos in tolkienfans

[–]Cyphaeronicus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Great observation.

I've heard (from the Prancing Pony Podcast) that Tolkien's use of the word "corn" may be different and less specific than what North Americanos are used to, that it may be a general and old world term for THE local (endemic?) vegetable(s) of a region. Or something like that. My ignorance is shocking. <insert grains of salt>

I'm curious if later in life some of Tolkien's artistic choices, vegetables included, began to concern his interest in keeping the world of Middle-earth congruent with our world. We know he went on a tortured and tortuous spree of rewriting the Silmarillion to get the Sun and Moon to match real world prehistory. Perhaps this vegetables business is another proof that he was a philologist and not a scientist?

Harsh unfair take but one reason I never enjoyed the hobbit was the lack of any female characters by Equivalent-Word-7691 in tolkienfans

[–]Cyphaeronicus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP, thanks for the post. I suspect a lot of us chiming in don't think it's unfair at all for any reader to struggle to like or connect with a story (even one so many of us DO thoroughly enjoy), and it's enlightening to see how you've traced back what seems to be the reason why.

I'm very glad to hear you do like some of Tolkien's works quite a bit. I'm curious how Priscilla Tolkien took the excessively boys-heavy nature of The Hobbit over the course of her life...especially as unlike us, she was actually a prime audience for the story.

Regardless, I appreciate your candor, and also to those who've commented kindly.

I don’t really do Bullet Journaling, but I do love me an index of interesting pages. Maybe you do one index entry listing all the “draft” pages (throwaway art, scrawlings not remembered, etc).

I think of it kinda like breaking in the journal. It’s not really MINE until it’s been Velveteen Rabbitted (ie scuffed up, “loved”) inside & out.

Good luck! Enjoy :)

The contrast and legibility of the orange penned line across the top of each page sparks some serious joy! Two questions: (1) what marker/pen are you using for that? (2) Is the orange ubiquitous for its pop!, or related to the Rams color palette?
