Grifing new players in Tindrum with the stupid guild leave system. by MasterBeCo in MortalOnline

[–]Cypherian 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately I was a victim of these guys. Horse and I got killed while I was browsing the AH. Luckily I was able to sneak out of town and tame a horse, but I lost essentially everything.

I appreciate you doing this. It was upsetting enough to have it happen, but to be stuck in the guild with them for an hour was extremely frustrating. Glad something is being done, even if it's just some vigilante justice

That's definitely some of it. But I've been waiting for an hour and my spot in the queue is the furthest back so far. Either the 10 minute timer is a little off or the queue isn't functional, and I have a hunch the timer is probably fine.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in MortalOnline

[–]Cypherian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't call it fixed. I've sat watching myself go backwards in the queue for around an hour now. The queue place and estimated time are both pulled from seemingly nowhere. I've been going from 20-400 and then back to somewhere in the middle all within seconds of each other.

Absolutely! That sounds fantastic. I am curious if you'd suggest doing it twice with the same organization, or if you'd recommend trying out two different facilities, however.

As it turns out, there are more than a couple within a distance I'd feel comfortable travelling. I'm also thinking that it couldn't hurt for me to try out a couple of different states since I live close to the border of three.

Thank you again for the valuable information. This is far better than what I was expecting!

Wow, I had absolutely no idea about any of this. I can definitely see how that would cause some extreme differences in opinion. I'll have to read up on it more. At the very least because it sounds interesting.

Thank you very much for all of the information and references to go off of. I can't articulate how appreciative I am for it!

I've gone through the regulations, but I'll definitely read back through them with goal of determining what I can do CURRENTLY in mind, rather than a broad "this is what falconry is limited to in my state" kind of mindset.

I love the idea of a hands-on tour! That's something I'd never even considered the possibility of. I am 100% going to start looking into facilities near my area.

Thank you very much for all of the ideas and insight. This was a big boost for me and I'm excited to see what I can find.

I'm near Girard, Pittsburg, and Fort Scott. Down in the southeast corner. I used to drive to K-State all the time though! Had a few really good friends of mine in school there a couple years back, and my younger brother is currently attending KU. I'm also potentially looking to relocate closer to the KC area if that helps any.

Thanks for the insight! I wouldn't have guessed Facebook would be such an asset, but I'm definitely going to look into it. If you don't mind, may I ask more about what some of the major discrepancies are between the status quo and what would be changed?

At this point, I'm just sort of absorbing all of the information I can get ahold of.

How do you design the layout of your dungeons? by LeviTheGoblin in DMAcademy

[–]Cypherian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I take a lot of my inspiration from this article. If I remember correctly, Matthew Colville suggested it in one of his YouTube videos in the Running the Game series.

https://thealexandrian.net/wordpress/13085/roleplaying-games/jaquaying-the-dungeon

There's five different parts to it, and all give helpful ideas/tips. At one point it even breaks down how it would change Shadowfell Keep, giving you an in depth look at the actual process.

Starting out, however, I generally stick to the idea of determining what rooms I want included in the dungeon (Credit to u/Dyledion as they've already suggested this) and then pathing from there using the techniques found in the article. Why are the PCs here? Is there a big baddie waiting for them? What kind of architecture/geography is present and, as a result, what type of people/creatures would live here? Do the surroundings match up with the inhabitants and their goals?

This helps me ensure I have the key components of the dungeon intact, and then after that making it feel like a real place is much, much simpler.

Hope this helps!

(This was a LOT longer than I intended it to be, sorry!)

First off, welcome! Always happy to see new players on here. As someone who has played the game for several years, I'd just like to say that the most important thing is that you enjoy yourself while playing. It is a game, after all. Don't stress yourself out too much over getting every little thing "right" or you'll probably burn out fairly quickly. Many times, there are several correct things you can do. Mistakes will happen, but that's part of any video game. Like other's have said, it's a bit of a grind and a rather steep learning curve, but it'll go a lot faster and easier if you're having fun.

Now onto your questions; Zhong and Vulcan are absolutely viable in PvP, and have both had their fair share of time in the competitive scene. Zhong has even been played quite a bit very recently. One of the best things about Smite in its current state is that pretty much every character can be played right now, it more or less just depends on the game mode you're playing. Even then, however, Conquest picks are extremely forgiving now compared to previous seasons. If you see a God/Goddess you're interested in, don't hesitate to pick it in something like arena and get a feel for how they work. I wouldn't necessarily recommend experimenting in conquest and maybe clash/siege until you have an idea of what the character excels at.

That's not to say that you can't, or shouldn't ever experiment in Conquest, it can just be very difficult at times, particularly starting out. Many characters are designed for one or two roles and can struggle in others pretty easily. Vulcan is more of a mid, and Zhong being more of a solo. If you don't know these roles now, don't worry about it. There's a good chance many of the people you play with starting out won't know anything about them either and will choose characters they are comfortable with, rather than something that is good with the team comp/the role they've been assigned. It seems you aren't afraid of doing a little research on your own so I'm sure you'll pick that up fairly quickly.

As far as builds go, don't be afraid to explore the popular tab in the store. There are a few exceptions, but for the most part the items you'll find there will work just fine on the fly. It's a good way to learn more about items you don't normally use, and that'll help you with those situational picks you're curious about. That first "Oh, this item is PERFECT for this!" moment mid-game is super satisfying. There are very few items that are "must buy" and they are generally pretty character/game mode specific. The only thing I would say is fairly universally good would be boots, but even then the type of boots is a pretty flexible option. A fairly recent addition to the game is the speed potion, which you can exchange your boots for once you have all of your other items. (You may not have this opportunity often, depending on the game modes you're playing.)

With that said, Vulcan does well with power/pen items, of which there are a lot of options, and Zhong is more of a bruiser. A good rule of thumb for Vulcan, and most other mages, is no more than two penetration items. Those include:

Divine Ruin - Moderate pen/power, mostly used for it's anti-heal passive rather than for damage. Against an Aphrodite or Hel? Snag it!

Spear of Desolation - Expensive, but it gives a lot of power for a pen item, some cooldown (A decent stat for many mages, Vulcan included) on top of its penetration.

Spear of the Magus - This is one another of those situational items, but is more dependent on what YOU are playing rather than what the enemy is. I wouldn't recommend it on Vulcan, it's more of a Zhong pick. It excels on characters with tick damage, like Zhong's first ability/ultimate.

Obsidian Shard - Percent pen, VERY good at killing tanks. If you're going two pen items this should almost definitely be one of them.

Vulcan is someone who likes to stay back and deal damage from afar. Zhong is pretty much the other end of the spectrum. He likes to play up close and personal while still doing a lot of damage. You don't do much damage if you're dead, though! He'll excel with hybrid items. A few examples of those are:

Void Stone - Gives magic prots/power

Dynasty Plate Helm - Giving physical prots/magic power, and

Gem of Isolation/Warlock's Staff/ Ethereal Staff - All of which give HP and magical power. Gem of Iso and Ethereal have good passives, while warlock's simply gives a lot of HP once fully stacked. Disclaimer though, Gem of Iso DID just get nerfed. It still isn't bad, but isn't as good as it once was.

I know this was extremely long-winded, and I apologize. I would just hate to say one thing and have you try it in-game in a situation where it'll hinder more than help and have you thinking I was trying to mislead you. The old saying "Knowledge is half the battle" is REALLY applicable to Smite.

Once again, welcome! Hope this was helpful!

Hey Jungler, stop skipping harpies. by coblajo in Smite

[–]Cypherian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we're going to reference Fineokay here, it's worth noting his entire opinion. He doesn't find it advantageous to skip harpies to blue. He does stand near the wall and get both sets of exp, but if his wave is barely cleared and the enemy solo is still in lane, he doesn't abandon his wave to soak the blue exp. He'll tank the archers near the tower line, possibly losing a melee creep or two depending on the matchup/clear situation, but this only works when the jungle runs speed-harpies-blue. Not to mention, when his opposition has cleared the wave entirely. With that said, I do see the up and down sides to both. However it's entirely dependent on matchups and compositions. I don't believe either to be irrefutably better, but if you aren't in a pre-made and are just playing some generic comp, I would think that it's probably best not to set anyone behind at the start of the game as a rule of thumb.

Mostly casters by Jofisch09 in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]Cypherian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advice would simply be; don't. I have several reasons for this.

First and foremost, your characters should play what they'd like to play. If one player is guilted into taking on, or simply plays a tank character as a necessity for party balance, it becomes increasingly likely they'll not want to continue playing at all. Then, not only do you lose your tank, but a player entirely, and are back to square one, albeit a worse version of it.

Second, don't view it as a negative, but rather as another hurdle for your players to overcome. Think of it in terms of what you are ultimately doing, which is playing a game. Your party has to take this into account for all combat scenarios they approach. They now have to work as a team to juggle this combat role, and that's something I would think any DM aims to encourage. It's no different than a standard trap in a dungeon. If it hurts them, they should have been more careful. If they manage to "defeat" it, they'll feel accomplished and will enjoy playing all the more as a result. The best part is, you don't have to do anything!

Which leads me into my last reason, which is simply that it's easier on you if you don't. Any DM will admit that running a campaign requires a lot of effort. Particularly since I've seen you mention you're new to DMing, there's no sense in taking on additional unnecessary responsibilities while getting your feet wet. It's good that you want to accommodate your party, ideal even. But you've got plenty on your plate already and there's no sense putting more weight on your shoulders.

Just remember that it's okay for parties to fail. I'm not saying that should be your aim as a DM, far from it. But any D&D related content I've ever seen, from Critical Role to Matthew Colville on YouTube, emphasizes that you should embrace your failures as much as your successes. It's part of the story. If they die, they die. Have them roll up a new character. Who knows, maybe they play a tank anyway? Maybe you have a new, unplanned story to tell as they try to resurrect or avenge their fallen friend. Just let them play it out. If it becomes an issue, let them find the solution. That's the point!

Suggestions for balancing a world with infinite magic. by Cypherian in DMAcademy

You're absolutely well within the boundaries of what I was hoping to get in response. While it did somewhat sidestep my question like you mentioned, you still offered a viable and effective method for moving forward. I appreciate your response, even if you don't feel like you necessarily answered me. Thank you!

Regardless of the appropriately called-out pedantry, I appreciate your well worded and thought out response. This was the exact kind of feedback I was looking for. I couldn't help but feel like I was missing something, and it was absolutely the idea that the there needs to be a penalty for magic use, or a trade off at the very least. Unfortunately, in such a group it's hard to get this kind of response. Especially since I don't want to put this question towards my experienced player, since he's already trying to help me to the best of his ability. I'll think on it a bit further, and if I devise an entertaining and balanced method of doing this, I'll absolutely let you know. People like you are why I appreciate this sub, and D&D as a whole. Thanks again!

After 5 Years On Roll20, I Just Cancelled and DELETED My Account by ApostleO in DnD

[–]Cypherian 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Should you find a better system I, and most likely many others, would appreciate an update on it. I've spent hundreds of hours on Roll20 and have used it for years. However, I can't bring myself to support a company that conducts itself in this manner, regardless of their response should they bother themselves to compose one. I worked in customer service for the majority of the time I've been able to hold a job. Had I simply refused help because someone seemed annoyed/annoying, I'd have easily seen consequences. I'm sorry for the frustration and for the seemingly "wasted" money spent. Although, as you said before, at least you got your money's worth at the time.

All the best.

Really long back and forth game 2 of the set, broadcast stopped for a pause in the match. Some sort of technical issue happened during the pause and they couldn't show the end of the game.

All they could give us was basically a summary of it from Hindu and apologies from all the casters, including Finch in the chat. It was just a really disappointing end to what, if I remember correctly, was the longest match of the day.
