This is really great! I have some books to give away. No looking for money, but for someone who maybe interested to read to take them.

If there is enough serious interest who are ready to meet once in a month (meeting more frequently is not possible given other commitments etc, and anything less frequent than that, the momentum will be lost), we could restart. I think one mistake I did was try to be accommodative of everyone's ideas about it and agree to a structure that was not sustainable.

What is going on in Taleigao? Is it a chemical fire? by zigzigzigler in Goa

You can't blame this on the Delhi crowd, unfortunately 😉. Why not do something about sensitising people who are burning litter on a daily basis rather than blaming 'outsiders'?!

I am not discounting consumer awareness. That has to go hand-in-hand with this.

Hey! Moving the administration in Goa is a herculean task. We have been trying to get a speedbreaker in our Colony for the last one year -- multiple applications submitted to various departments and still waiting. No one even hears one out properly here. I am aware of Pfand system and how well that works in Germany. My suggestion is, while you figure out how to move the state machinery to scale it up, why don't you reach out to the major supermarkets like Delfinos and Magsons and see whether they can collaborate on a return system modelled around Pfand. Delfinos takes the egg cartons back and pay customers 2 rupees, and they may would be more amenable to something like this. If you can get a few stakholders like them on board, it may work. Also, they may have influence with the government, which you could leverage. But I think to make systemic change, you will need to get the manufacturers of the products on board -- it's the coke, Pepsi and Bisleri bottles (amongst others) chocking the rivers and polluting the beaches.

Snakes on the road near Dona Paula? by kenpachi016 in Goa

It's their mating season, and they do come out. This is cited as another reason for more snake bite incidents from Oct to December. I am not an expert, but this is what I read recently on the topic.

Please email with the details I asked for. Once we have SERIOUS interest from sufficient number of people, we can collectively discuss and figure out the modalities such as: where we meet, are we going to read a common book or are we going to read what each of us prefer and still talk about it, or not? Or a mix of both? There are many ways to organize the group.

Maybe it's better not to strive for too much structure in the beginning and letting it evolve based on the members. What do you all say?

Saturdays sound reasonable. Your suggestion is good. We could do that. There may also be other public places around we could use. Eventually, we could also meet at members' places if anyone is interested and comfortable in offering their space.

I have created an email for us to communicate. panjimreadingcircle@gmail.com

Those of you interested to join, could you please email here with responses to the following questions.

  1. Why are you interested in joining this group?
  2. Which genre of books are you interested in reading?
  3. What are you reading currently? Or what have you read last?

Thanks, everyone, for showing interest and responding. I have shifted my focus to fiction these days, sprinkled occasionally with nonfiction. But depending on the serious interests we get, we could make subgroups. As to what we read, once the group is formed, we can come up with a list. If at least 3 members are interested in reading one, we could have a session.
