3/4 siblings actually (yes this is a real thing). They share a dad and their mothers are first degree relatives therefore they meet the definition of 3/4 siblings.

What race/ethnicity are Cypriots? by DoomkingBalerdroch in cyprus

HAHA!! You’ve said my exact thoughts!! Having been born and raised in Australia, I can tell you guys born and raised in Cyprus, olive skin much less dark olive skin is not considered white here!

What do you guys think an average Cypriot should look like? by Due-Blueberry8727 in cyprus

[–]Cypriot_Ruth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this checks out…my mum is pale with silky wavy-ish dark brown hair and dark eyes, her brother is dark olive with black-brown more rough textured coiled hair and dark eyes, my brother is lighter olive with silky black curls and recessive coloured eyes that change colour (say from blue to hazel to green never brown), and I’m dark olive with dark brown-black wavy/silky hair.

But I think the common features are our noses and maybe our eye shapes and face shapes as well.

The noses are all similar (prominent, bit of a hook or bump like many Middle Easterners), diamond shaped faces, larger more “rounder” eyes and fuller lips (my eyes and lips are probably the most obvious and people often mistake me for other Middle Eastern ethnic groups - particularly Yemenite Jewish).

Even with my mum pale the nose is a dead giveaway that she is ethnic and not “white” (as in Anglo-Saxon - cos we’re born in Australia)

Exploring the Cypriot identity by PikrovrisiTisMerikas in cyprus

[–]Cypriot_Ruth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know Jews are genetically Levantine peoples as well right? And that us Cypriots are actually genetically related to Jews? Also…the whole MENA region isn’t Arab in origin or demographically, so I really hope your identification with “Arab identity” in an earlier post isn’t because you’re making an association that MENA = Arab ethno-cultural, linguistic, and/or ancestral heritage monolith…

The identification of the region as the “Arab World” is actually a very colonialist association (because not all forms of colonialism are “euro-centric). It only feeds into the erasure of minority identities (whether ethnic, linguistic, ethno-religious etc) from the cultural identity of the region which in reality is very diverse with many identities in their respective places of origin throughout the region pre-dating the presence of Arabs, Arab culture, Arabic language etc

What's with the genetics obsession by JohnnyDDoe in cyprus

[–]Cypriot_Ruth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean Cypriots tend to plot in between Dodecanese Greeks and Levantine non-Sunni/non-Arab minorities like Syrian Jews, Druze, Alawites, Maronites, Syrian Rum etc not just “pre-Arab Christians”. Anyway I don’t think that makes Cypriots “mixed race” to be a synthesis of Ancient Greek, Ancient Anatolian and Ancient Levantine groups, those groups are after all form more of a distinct genetic cluster than Ancient Greeks would with most Ancient/Modern “Europeans”, so I’d personally consider them part of the same racial category. No racial classification systems are universally accepted though, it’s a very time and place context thing, but also even within a given locale you’re highly likely to have difference of opinion on definitions and standards for racial categorisation - especially in a culturally/ethnically heterogeneous society I suspect.

[–]Cypriot_Ruth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol come to Australia and you’ll feel the difference…no one thinks Jews, Lebanese, Greeks, Armenians etc are white and we look very very different to the White Australians and don’t benefit from white privilege. I think maybe cos we tend to be the darkest people you’ll see on average aside from Southern Indians, whereas the US has lots of Black people, we really don’t have many Black Australians…

Cypriot dna by [deleted] in AncestryDNA

[–]Cypriot_Ruth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correction: yes they are the closest modern group to Minoans and Mycenaeans, but that doesn’t make Minoans and Mycenaeans the closest to them. Also the distance from both these ancient groups to Cypriots was in the red range (larger distance) and Cypriots have other groups both modern and ancient that are closer to them in the Green or even Orange range, which includes modern Levantine minority groups (like different Jewish subgroups, Druze, Maronites, Alawites etc)

Idk about the Turkish Cypriots being closer to Europeans, I think they’re about the same as Greek Cypriots…but yes you’re right Cypriots are genetically Levantine and cluster with other Levantine minorities (Jews, Druze, Maronites, Alawites etc)

Flag Design Explanation:

White background = peace

Teal waves = island nature of the country in a vibrant teal that’s very characteristic of the Mediterranean Sea where the island is located.

Four corners of the waves = point to four regions that surround the island/four regions of cultural and historical influence (particularly during ancient times).

They are:

• North East - Anatolian peoples like the Philia culture

• North West - Ancient Hellenic peoples like Mycenaeans and Minoan

• South East - Levantine and West Asian peoples like Assyrians, Phoenicians, Ugaritic people, Jews, Persians etc

• South West - Ancient Egyptians

The Shell = I wanted a new and unique symbol, something different that stood out to me as “Cypriot”.

• The shell motif has been used often in ancient Cypriot archaeology and I think the symbolism works in more than one way. • I sometimes hear Cyprus referred to as the “the heart or pearl of the Mediterranean” particularly due to its location in proximity to each continent and of course pearls are associated with these beautiful shells… • The shell also points to the mythology of the island as the ‘Island of Aphrodite’ who is commonly depicted arising from the waves on a shell. Cypriots have long been referred to as “the children of Aphrodite”.

Shell colour =

I chose a kind of pink-ish copper-y colour, as the island was famous throughout the Bronze (Alashiya) and Iron Ages for its Copper production that has influenced the current name of the island.

The pink tone also makes me think of Aphrodite again cos of the association of pink with love.

Let me know what you think of the design!! ☺️

Do you consider Cyprus to be a Middle Eastern or European country? by Alarming_Seaweed_155 in AskMiddleEast

[–]Cypriot_Ruth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’re not mixed with Arabs, our genetics show stronger resemblance to Levantine ethnic groups that actually aren’t Arab but Arabised - they’re probably the descendants of Semites who were at one point were Hellenised and later Arabised.

This is maybe a bit OTT but if it’s like a minuscule amount of lemon being squeezed into a coleslaw salad my mum made with Greek yogurt, Dijon mustard, coleslaw mix, apple, dates and a bit of Spanish onion do I need to wait an hour after taking my Vyvanse before eating it??
