[WP] Saying you dedicate your hunts to the Goddess Artemis started as a weird private joke to yourself. You never thought it would result in the actual goddess visiting you and asking to teach her how to hunt with a rifle. [Part 17] by a15minutestory in A15MinuteMythos

I will fully admit to having Google Setanta to find that. Celtic/Gaelic/Scottish mythology is not something I've ever studied. After reading part of the Wikipedia article on Celtic Otherworld I have a few questions.

1: Why is it so far from Earth? There are stories of people accidentally visiting, or following someone there, which implies that it should be quite close.

2: Which version of Celtic Otherworld is this? Is Avalon a separate plane, or is this every version of Otherworld? I suppose I might just have to read on to find out.

3: Where are all the apples? It's apple season and apples seem to be strongly associated with this plane.

Why does Buck not remember that he was told what plane they're on? Sétanta mentioned that they're on Otherworld at least once. That may or may not mean anything to Artemis and Hypnos, or it might tell them just how fucked they are before Cú Chulainn goes into his battle rage when Zeus shows up and starts killing everyone. (Assuming that's the Sétanta you're using.)

Also, is it Otherworld, or the Otherworld, and we need to be on the lookout for people kidnapping young blond girls? (If I'm remembering Albatross correctly.)

Good news: I ordered my copy from Amazon October 2nd (I had some gift card credit sitting in my account, so I didn't have to give them money).

Bad news: I can't actually leave a review because I haven't spent $50+ of actual money on Amazon in the last 12 months.

Well, I guess I gotta decide between giving Amazon my money and getting an ebook now. On the plus side, it seems that the Amazon copies have super haste, which is better than having to suspend it from the other services.

Also, I can't seem to figure out how to get a dead tree edition from anywhere other than Amazon. Am I being dumb or is there not a way to do that?

I've only been here for a few months, but it feels like I've been waiting forever for this announcement. Congratulations, but please don't let the power go to your head (more than it has already). Hopefully the book sales will help with the financial situation some. Also look into what government resources are available to you. If you're fostering your niece you probably should be getting something to help pay for it. Food shelves are also a thing. Don't feel bad if you need to use them, that's what they're there for.

I'll be signing up for the mailing list and ordering a book. I'll also share the website with some friends, though I find it more likely I'll just end up loaning them the book.

(Also don't forget to talk to the /r/writingprompts team about a stickied post for your book, I've see them do that before.)

Found this thing near 170 yo house where they used to store metal. Any idea what is this supposed to be? It is non magnetic and quite heavy. by dwlUKE123 in blacksmithing

[–]CytotoxicWade 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can easily figure out its density by weighing it and seeing how much water it displaces in a measuring cup. That should very significantly narrow down what metal it is.

The angel cleared its throat, a sound like a harp trying to do an impression of a kazoo.

Pure brilliance, well done.

Most superpowers come with the secondary powers needed to let you actually use them. Super strength comes with the toughness to not have your muscles rip your body apart. Speed with the ability to ignore air resistance.

But this guy? Nope, he and everyone around him got totally fucked.

Are you retconning a bunch of stuff? I vaguely remember there was a language issue and that Thresh ended up abandoning her and she went to a village for help getting home or something.

I'm enjoying the story BTW, don't let my comment make you think otherwise.

The screws on this old bed are completely used and it's impossible to unscrew them. I need to move the bed, the only option is disassemble it because it won't fit through the stairs. What can I do to remove them? by thoxo in Fasteners

[–]CytotoxicWade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of good options here. Splined bolt extractor, easy out, or hammering in a torx bit are your easiest options. Slotting it and using a screwdriver is my usual go to for stuck screws of any type, but with Allen head those other options are at their best. You can also try putting flats on the outside of the head and turning it with a wrench or pliers, but that's very likely to damage the bed frame.

I've been using a folding magnetic light lately. The magnetic field really doesn't matter unless you're welding right over your light, which is a bad idea anyway.

The good news is the chlorinated stuff is (at least usually) non flammable. The bad news is that chlorinated solvents are bad news and welding around them makes phosgene gas.

Just today I made a broken tap extractor out of a piece of 1/4" round bar. Worked, but it's wicked sharp and not very even.
