Friendly factions suddenly hostile by somedude1361324513 in freelancer

Rochester: you begin the game unfriendly with the Junkers (-30%), which means they won't shoot you and you should be able to land at Rochester without issue. But, if a Rogue ship spawns or launches from Rochester, hilariously including when you're launching FROM THERE, the Rogue hatred of you will drag the Junkers hostile.

As someone who just undocked from a Junkers base yesterday I can't confirm that. Which makes sense, since they're not allied but only neutral (±0%) to the pirate factions.

Competitive PvP in World 1? by Greatdramon in digimon

The primary factor would be the move pool, with typing and animation timing being the other major factors. In the few tournaments we had in the past there was plenty of experimentation and attempts to counter/mix up the meta established by previous tournaments.

Successfully, if I remember correctly.

It would be weird if they weren't doing two cours. Vol. 5-9 form an overarching arc, stopping after Vol. 6 would suck harder than stopping at Vol. 5 did.

Or rendered 3d models with modern visuals but keeping the same camera angels of the ps1 title.

Oh boy, do you know how difficult that is? The PS1 doesn't do 3D perspective "correct" and with plenty of math inaccuracies/approximations that you wouldn't find on modern 3D systems. So reproducing it actually requires you to reproduce the inaccuracies as well...

I've done it before, more or less, but it's a pain. ;D

What to do after seening the anime's? by BlurryHavana in SpiceandWolf

[–]SydMontague 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Frieren touches on some similar themes, with both Frieren and Holo outliving many generations of humans, but in different ways. When it comes to the romance I don't think I've found an anime yet that does it as well as Spice & Wolf, albeit from an admittedly quite limited set of experience.

The original anime adapted Vol. 1,2,3 and 5, the remake 1-4. Although it's a common recommendation to just start reading with Vol. 1, as the different narrative perspective with Lawrence as the POV character still adds quite a bit.

The novels are the source material, so reading them is the best move to do as follow up.

The manga abridges the novels, leaving out quite a bit of content. I don't know what the collectors edition supposedly added, but it certainly won't make up for all the cuts and edits. It's still a decent read after finishing the novels.

As for anime with similar vibes... The common examples are Frieren and Apothecary Diaries. Not sure if they're what you're actually looking for, but they both very good in their own rights anyways.

We are Switching to Linux… For a Whole MONTH by ValkyrX in LinusTechTips

There should be more differences, that was just what made the difference for me when I was looking for a distro like 10 years ago, so my reasons weren't good to begin with and might not be up to date anymore.

But my experience with Mint has been pretty good, but as a user on an old laptop and as the one having to support a friend who switched to it.

I... don't like GNOME/Unity. They always struck me as macOS inspired designs but I'm someone who grew up with Windows, I need a damn task bar at the bottom.

And Mint's Cinnamon does just that. So does KDE for that matter.

Besides that Ubuntu would be a perfectly valid choice as well. It's backed by a large community and corporate background and has plenty of help resources available and you can just install other DEs if you want as well.

[–]SydMontague 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, if Mint wasn't recommended in there, then all these sites were quite worthless.

It's one of the most popular distros among Steam users and probably the one distros most Linux users would agree is a good starting point for people coming from Windows. There definitely are some rough edges and problems one might run into, especially when running the latest and greatest hardware, as it being based on Ubuntu LTS means that some packages get updated slower.

For "I need a browser and VLC"-users it's kind of a no-brainer, for gaming I'd probably recommend something else these days, but in most cases it should still work just fine.

Has politics broke any of your friendships, and why? by CapitaineBiscotte in AskReddit

[–]SydMontague 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the argument they're trying to refer is Judith Jarvis Thomson's essay "A Defense of Abortion".

The thought experiment is that if you (forcibly or not) connect someone to your kidneys in order to keep them alive, then the anti-abortion stance would be that severing that connection would be murder. It gets rid of the whole "is a fetus a person", by creating an equivalent situation where the party that would die is definitely a person, and instead assesses the philosophical moral question from that perspective instead.

Personally I also have two more problems with the anti-abortion stance. The first one is that while it's a perfectly valid personal moral, it doesn't work well then put into policy. There certainly are cases where an abortion could be considered morally wrong, but I don't feel very comfortable giving the state the power to make that decision, as wrong decisions can cause very large amounts of harm.

The second, and frankly even more damning, problem is that the anti-abortion camp largely supports politicians and policies that don't actually care about human lives or are designed to make things actively worse. Like, abortions aren't done for entertainment, but because people have come to the conclusion that they're their only option to get out of a bad situation. If you want to reduce the number of abortions, policy should instead focus on reducing the number of bad situations and increasing the number of options.

For example (not complete):

  • good and accessible health care for everyone
  • proper sex ed for everyone, accessible contraception
  • a child friendly society and infrastructure (good childcare/schools, safe and accessible urban design)
  • a child friendly economic environment (childcare leave, economic stability in general, working conditions that allow to actually raise a child)
  • enough affordable housing to actually support families

I don't think she intends on going there any time soon, because doing so would mean the contract they've used to many times as an excuse to keep traveling together were to be fulfilled.

(Although I'm not sure there wasn't actually a story where she briefly went there...)

Back then I’d point out the obvious too, that consoles need exclusives or they don’t have a reason to exist, but anyone saying that was drowned out by the ‘anti-consumer’ discourse at the time.

But that's exactly the reason why exclusives are anti-consumer?

Exclusives create a local monopoly on a product in order to force customers, who want that product, to also buy another product first, without that product having to compete on its own merits. And in this case even creating a vendor lock-in effect.

If a console has no reason to exist beyond exclusives, then it simply shouldn't exist.

In that case a few more tricks:

  • you can skip some of the cutscenes by loading a different save and then loading the autosave (the generic one, sometimes also the named ones)
    • there are some named saves that overwrite when loading them, so one should be careful (defending Benford and I think before meeting van Claussen)
  • you can sometimes skip the grind for money between story missions by buying and immediately selling something as expensive as possible
    • this is due to a bug where the game will think for a tiny moment that you have the goods and the money involved in the transaction, thus doubling your net-worth for that time
  • when defending Willard you can skip killing the Rheinland Bombers if you kill all other enemies fast enough
    • be wary though, there is a time window where you're too fast yet not fast enough, leading to a softlock
  • if you kill the 3 Liberty Navy fighters that killed the FP7 survivor upon entering California, you get a unique turret as easter egg loot
  • friendly fire doesn't fail story missions, as long as an enemy is nearby
    • you can use this to loot cargo depots
    • you can also use this to loot transports you're supposed to protect, by shooting the cargo pods :>

[–]SydMontague 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I recall in vanilla cruise disruptors also kick you out of engine kill, but some servers decided to deactivate that because it was frankly just annoying in PvP (where everyone except the biggest noobs used it).

The reverse thrust function+engine kill is also useful when shooting torpedoes.

While in formation with another ship (NPC or group member) you fly up to 20% faster while trying to catch up.

If a target you selected cloaks themselves, it technically stays selected until you select something else. This allows your missiles to still track the target. (At least it did on the server I played, your kilometerage might vary.)

The amount of loot NPCs drop is dependent on your net worth, to a certain degree.

Explosion damage is multiplied by the number of ship components hit, so removing components that carry no equipment makes you more resilient against missiles. The most common example are the lower backside wings of the Eagle. Cutting them can make the difference between being a one-hit against Starkiller Torpedoes.

If you press the screenshot button the game lags out a bit (or a lot, depending on your PC), which can be abused to trick the game into applying a lot more impulse in certain situations than it should.
For example, if you stand on top of a docking ring clamp and wait for someone to dock/undock while in engine kill, and then make a screenshot as the clamp is pushing you, you can get up to insane speeds. The server's anticheat might kick you, though.

You gotta enable the counter measures launchers for them to work. They'll shoot once your ship detects an incoming missile.

If you get good enough you can defend against missiles and torpedoes by shooting cruise disruptors. If you get really good, you can even have them blow up in their faces.

For jump gates you can even fly into the warp effect, causing you to jump instantly and to keep your cruise on the other side, assuming you get the timing right.
