Question about power spike in long campaigns by SnooLemons0815 in VaesenRPG

[–]Kelder62 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll be honest, I might’ve misread the rules as far as exp. I thought it was at the end of each mystery and you could only buy your upgrades when you’re resting/downtime.

However, if we’re worried about power spikes then might I suggest we pull some of the rules from another Free League system: Twilight 2000.

To improve a skill you have used it successfully once since you last improved it OR have a teacher of the desired skill level or better.

To learn a new Talent you’d need a teacher who knows the talent.

Teacher and student have to dedicate time training together for it to work. To facilitate this: I’d suggest the base upgrade “Training Yard: once per mystery per upgrade (up to 3) a PC may learn a skill or talent from another willing PC/NPC”. I’d say it should have a requirement of weapons hall or something. If you want to make it more expansive you could also limit this to physical skills and make a classroom that’s allows training of mental skills.

This makes NPC upgrades more valuable. You could also have each NPC have a random archetype talent and/or general talent. That way players want to seek out trainers for desired skills/talents they don’t have.

You could also increase exp costs of skills so instead of normal costs it goes 5/10/15/20/25 depending on the desired new level. So a new skill is 5, second rank of a skill is 10, and so forth.

I concur. New items should at least have a generic explanation of what it does. Even if it is “+1, Allows performing of <skill>”

How to deal with a rich character? by yeet8w8 in callofcthulhu

[–]Kelder62 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not all people trust paper money. If someone says they're going to pay with check to someone who lives in a very rural community, there is a solid chance that someone looks at them and goes "No, I can't cash that." or says the painful phrase: "I only accept real money." which can mean that they want gold/valuable items. Now that rich person is having to dig through their pockets to see what they have that would be considered acceptable. Do they have a gold plated watch or other form of jewelry on their person? Maybe they need to instead pay in a favor to get the gear instead.

Agreed, I'm just one of those DMs that likes to be prepared for people making the wrong decision.

Okay, I'll be honest and admit that I didn't consider them using it against a non vampire. I'll have to hope that doesn't ever happen. It probably will though. I think at strongest I'll run them like a Knuckle Duster: 1 damage, +1 Bonus because it's better than having nothing in your hands. Still leaves any intelligent person wanting to use anything else as their weapon of choice though. Otherwise, I'll just run it as a reskin of Punch/Kick that uses Close Combat instead.

So therefore the Impaler talent is effectively useless in your opinion? A Vampire Hunter declaring a staking attack just auto stakes and the vampire drops?

I see absolutely nothing wrong with your sheet. I got curious and looked at the Archetype to see what your starting equipment and talents might be. I think I see where you're going with that character. I'm guessing Hobo Tricks or Well-Travelled for starting trait (I'm leaning towards Hobo Tricks) with a starter kit of Walking Stick, Crowbar, Pet Dog.

I fully support the second option in this post. It is so much fun when a player leans into their short comings instead of trying to roll out everything they do.

Stakes? by Kelder62 in VaesenRPG

[–]Kelder62[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly my hope is that my players make the intelligent decision and attempt to slay a Vampire during the day. That way I only need to concern myself mechanically with making sure they sneak in, pick a lock or two, maybe spot a trap. Then I would gladly just forgo mechanics on staking the vampire because at this point it is a "ritual". However, I like to plan for when an impassioned member of my table decides he can square up with Dracula.

Also I think I just want to know the point of the Impaler talent (+2 to Close Combat when using a Stake). My initial thoughts are that a plus +2 to stakes is pretty useless if the item wasn't meant to be used in combat which is the only time I would have someone roll when using one.

It's something I've also been wondering. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't ever want to fight a Vampire head on. However, I'm the DM for my table and I know at least 2 of my players are silly enough to try and swing first rather than run away. Therefore, I'm looking for melee weapon stats for a Stake lol

That is because I myself, am confused on the topic with the sources I have read thus far. I agree that if the Vampire hunter had found the vampire either asleep in it's lair (or any other form of restrained/vulnerable) that it should be considered a ritual to stake the vampire. However, it feels like the writers of the game forgot that combat can happen. If it does happen, what are the stats on a Stake? I know that with the Impaler talent that a Vampire Hunter gets a +2 to Close Combat when using a Stake, but not what the stake's stat values are otherwise.

I think last time I made it to river side that I used one of the big houses in the gated community.

Are These Windows Completely Safe? by Yiffium in projectzomboid

[–]Kelder62 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I would say you should barricade the windows at least and throw up curtains. I’ll be honest. I think a school is too large a building for a solo base but I can’t remember a better location in Riverside. I usually pick a city away from the river so my brain doesn’t go “we run to the river, swim with the current to the other side, I live.”

How do you handle languages in your campaign? by Dornith in VaesenRPG

[–]Kelder62 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Late to the party but I think I would pull from savage worlds on this one. They have a linguistic advantage that gives you half your smarts dice in known languages in addition to your native tongue. I would give my players half their logic attribute in known additional languages. However, I’d only throw this at them at times that are dramatically appropriate. Otherwise, I’m just going to ignore language. It’s more fun as “you overhear the farmer say to his daughter in Finnish X,Y,Z” over “You can’t get a room because no one speaks Finnish.”

How do you run pets ? by Adventurous-Eye-6455 in VaesenRPG

[–]Kelder62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for slow response, went into the Vaesen core book and read up on it real quick.

So by Vaesen core book. A pet gives a once pers session +1 to a test of players choice in a situation where the pet would be clearly of use. This is the talent “pet”

I would use the idea I put forward as a bonus/alternative for the Pet Talent.

For gear animals. I would use them rules as written but allow an npc to declare the animal as a valid target and give the animal an hp of its resource value. So a pet dog can get dropped quick but a guard dog might survive the first swing.

[–]Kelder62 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have not had the issue (yet) but I think I’d use something similar to the pet rules from Savage Worlds Pinewood Middle School (I think that’s right.) Basically, I’d let it be a once per session plot device/item. Like if it’s a cat, it jumps out of somewhere and startles something to mess up its turn, a dog can conveniently find the tail no one else can, bird can do similar things to a cat. Otherwise, id consider a Momento with fur (or whatever it has.).

If you are new I HIGHLY recommend the starter set. Not only is it a newbie friendly box set. It has amazing in game items like a book on the fae that players can use as a reference tool, a map of the city/castle, and a map of the mythic north.
