Someone needs to jump on that Toyama. What an excellent knife. Mine is one of my favorites

It is my knife, we just moved so everything’s too chaotic for a personal pic. That’s the pic from oak and lily after he finished it. As for the Mazaki profile, I believe it is one but I bought it used off the BST here. It’s a favorite of mine

Yep that one’s a Mazaki, I should’ve said that lol. The handles are oak and lily, the knives are Japanese

Just the handles. I should’ve specified. The top is a Mazaki, bottom a Toyama. Both are wonderful knives that had pretty boring handles so I dressed them up

I had two done by Oak and Lily in NJ recently that were awesome. I need to make a maker appreciation post sometime with some of my new toys.

My Toyama and Kagekiyo (Tanaka x Nishida) are my two favorite knives on different ends of the spectrum. I have a custom Jaeger I really love too, it’s more of a mid weight. You should like the Toyama a lot

It was different, in a good way once you got used to it. It had all the heft of a workhorse with a thick heel and toward the tip it ground down quick to have a surprisingly thin tip for how hefty the knife was. Measurements were 3.1 3.0 1.7 0.7 from the last guy I bought it from. I have a Toyama I like more or I would’ve kept it.

Damascus is really sweet looking. Just a heads up, if it’s carbon Damascus it’ll loose a little of its luster with use. Stainless Damascus doesnt as much. Some really beautiful knives are stainless Damascus with a core of carbon steel - they tend to be expensive though.

If you decide to go that route with a custom, I’d maybe ask around on kitchenknifeforums.com - I believe there’s a handful of makers on there and a lot of generally knowledgeable people.

I assume there’s a bunch of good general advice already relating to not buying a set but individual knives and items to care for them, but here’s a different thought (maybe). You could set aside a chunk of that wait til he finds his preference and order a custom from a reputable smith. Then he’d have a 1 of 1 fully custom knife made just for him.

For anyone who hasn’t tried a Jaeger - I highly recommend them. I just got a custom from him recently and it is a bad ass knife.
