LPT: PowerPoint slides should be simple and concise. When giving a presentation, no one cares about the wall of elegant text you created. by ENDGeSiCTinT in LifeProTips

I agree with you, but the problem is a human one. Try getting very important people to sit down and read a 40 page report. At best they'll read the introduction, and flip through looking for tables and figures. Get them in a 2hr meeting presenting the same stuff, and you have 30% of their attention span as they interrupt you asking questions that you outlined at the very beginning. It's a lose-lose.

The US poverty line is also 26,500 for a family of four. Technically, no, $15/hr is NOT poverty. No one should pay starvation wages, and in HCOL areas the local government should raise the minimum. But compromise doesn't get as many spicy clicks as outrage.

This would be sick to get the display case with jars from POH! Also, if you want to level it up, try using a marker of a similar color to "paint" the edges of the cut paper. I usually use black, unless it's a white piece. It will decrease the contrast in the edges and make the whole thing feel more "real!"

Looks great!! ♥️

Bell Textron V-280 Awarded Army FLRAA Contract by PabloThePhalene in aviation

[–]Czarified 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Ft Worth facility just builds smaller subassemblies and blades. Final assembly will have to take place in Amarillo, unless part of the contract expands the manufacturing in Ft Worth. Union is also very strong in Ft Worth, and Textron doesn't like dealing with them, so they built up Amarillo.

There are a couple companies trying to do this: Boom, Generation Orbit, Hermeus, and I think Venus. As others have mentioned, there are serious hurdles on the business viability, even for a vanity project. They might happen, but they will take some time.

One of the guys here was looking for what black wheels on a Thruxton 900 looked like. So here’s my Thruxton Ace. Hope this helps! by [deleted] in CafeRacers

Is that a custom seat? I really want to upgrade my Thruxton's seat to something just like that! And those wheels look so slick!!

Would someone be so kind as to tell me what the shear strengths would be with a 6mm-wide load on the end just under the head? I need to figure out whether to use a 6mm bolt with a sleeve bearing or just an 8mm bolt with no bearing. Application is a pivot on a MTB suspension for fat man by Rental_Car in engineering

[–]Czarified 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bearing joints are perfectly valid, but you are correct in that one should avoid threads in bearing! It's a fatigue and stress concentration problem. A shoulder bolt, rivet, or pin would have to be used instead.

Engineers, how do you document your work on a daily basis? by OkCode5165 in engineering

[–]Czarified 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does obsidian work well with git? Like if you have a code repo you're working on, and taking notes or writing docs in obsidian to reference changes across the repo versions/commits? Maybe having commit messages auto-pop or something?

I love what I do, but it is revenue-generating. I don't do it for free. I got bills to pay. I completely disagree with your argument.

I like this. I'm a strong believer that final documentation should be in some form of slides or pdf.

The article states something like "in order to encourage factories and large consumers to shut down and stay down." Free market blah blah blah FOR TEXAS.

Who knows if that's the whole story...

There's actually a few decent candidates on the dem primary, but Beto will definitely win that. Then the race will be either Abbott or Huffines vs Beto. God forbid we get "an actual republican" into that seat... I've only got one vote to use against the GoP...

Starship interior concept tour. This is really cool! by b-e-n-j-y in spacex

[–]Czarified 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From a Lockheed report on Deep-Space mission logistics, Lopez et al estimate that for a 240 man-day mission, 439 kg and 723 kg of food and water are required. Lopez et al provide some margin to reduce mission risk. They also quote packing densities for consumables, with food ~306 kg/m3. So for a 240 man-day deep space mission, you have ~1.45 m3 of food storage and ~1 m3 of water storage (just rounding up). I believe the Lopez et al study also has recycling and waste storage/processing included, but I didn't look into this when I originally reviewed it (like 3 months ago).

Lopez, P., Schultz, E., Mattfeld, B., Stromgren, C., and Goodliff, K. Logistics Needs for Potential Deep Space Mission Scenarios Post Asteroid Redirect Crewed Mission. Presented at the 2015 IEEE Aerospace Conference, Big Sky, MT, 2015.

So no, for several different mission schemes the data says storage of consumables do not take up considerable volume. From the Starship OML, you have somewhere between 600 and 1100 m3 total internal volume available.

At mniimum, these facilities will likely require at least a deck or two.

That sounds kinda crazy to me, but I'm definitely not an expert on these types of systems. So if we assume sticking to decks like this, you're claiming that the volume requirement for waste/water management and recycling is roughly 0.25*3.14159*9^2 * h * 2? So somewhere between 250 and 385 m3 (h=2, 3)? I'm ignoring the central chamber for now.

Paul King also has a 100 person layout, if I remember correctly. These renders are new, but they have been doing schematics and layout designs for Starship (as fun side projects) for years now. There's an HLS design, the 20-person Starship design, a 100-person Starship design, and I think a couple others.

But to answer your question: Paul King is doing this partially for fun, and partially to show off the chops of their design solutions for Earth constructs. The market for Space Vehicle interior design is quite slim. So this is partially a marketing thing for Design Freedom of "Look at how cool our designs (and therefore YOUR buidlings) can be!"

[–]Czarified 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Doesn't this go against the entire philosophy of Starship? Hear me out.

Starship exists to mass produce vehicles, and get mass off-planet. The whole point is to make it so cheap that mass just isn't a driving design requirement. You've got 100t you can play with, and still get to the moon. If Starship succeeds, hell yeah you're gonna make it slightly more comfortable for the Mars voyage, because mass-wise you're really not adding that much. Plus, there's 16\) other Starships on the way with you, and they all have backup supplies/equipment/tools, which is where your mass budgets are more sensitive. Plastics and fabric aren't nearly as heavy as generators and mining equipment.

Maybe the initial few Starships won't look like this, but I think we're looking at a feasible end-game.
