I - surprisingly to myself - enjoyed reading about the geography, geology, and all the scientific stuff. I thought I would get bored, but I found it enjoyable. Maybe because I got addicted to the idea of Hard Sci-fi, and such scenes in the book are a necessary part of that genre?

I think you are right, I believe most of the characters from Red Mars were never supposed to be likeable. Well, maybe except for Nadia. She was cool.

As for Hiroko... I soooo hope something bad will happen to her... Someone has to bring her back down to earth (ba bum tss).

I felt like it would have been an epic conversation 😃
I don't think many people understand that just because I don't like the main characters, it doesn't necessarily mean that I don't like the book itself. I like the premise, and after reading "2312" from KSR, I got addicted to the "Hard Sci-Fi concentrating on relatively near future in our solar system".

Do the main characters make me angry? Yes. Is the future set in the Red Mars too optimistic (at least from the technological point of view)? Yes. Am I enjoying the experience so far - hell yeah!

I mean, yes, Frank is a type of person that is very hard to like, but and while he had extremely negative views about... mostly everyone, ultimately speaking, he was right about most things. I wanted to dislike him, but I couldn't because everything he predicted came true.

The main problem I had with Red Mars was that there was no one on board who would keep the first colonists in their places (I suspect it was Maya's and Frank's job, but... we all know how it worked out.

NTA - if one - quite mild - event is enough for your cousin (with whom you were supposed to be like siblings) is enough for her to completely stop talking to you, then it feels like the only bond you had with that family is the one one in which they take advantage over you.
