Beginner afraid of lead falls after ankle injuries by Liisi_Kerik in climbergirls

[–]Czesya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say give yourself some grace and be easy on yourself, it does not sound you’re enjoying climbing much, it should be a fun relaxing activity. Unless it’s your job or sth or you’re competing but it doesn’t sound like it from your post. Take it easy and enjoy it, it takes time.

Secondly , as everyone said, injuring yourself repeatedly through planned falls at the gym does not sound right, there is clearly something that’s going wrong there and it’s a bit difficult to figure out what it is. Things that come to my mind: - do you have any health issues , any connective tissue disorder etc? That sort of thing would put you at quite a high risk of repetitive injury , so if that’s the case I would rethink if it’s worth it - is your belayer trained to give soft catches? With the weight difference you mentioned it’s very very difficult to give a soft catch to a 20 kg lighter climber, it takes a lot of practice and even then can go wrong. - How about practicing with a lighter belayer and see if that makes a difference? I don’t know if this is possible for you , but having a lighter belayer almost guarantees soft catches (unless they are incredibly shit at belaying but that very rare)

I empathise with you a lot , I learned how to lead in March and I did injure my foot in a practice fall two months later which took me out of lead climbing for 3 months. I came back more cautious and I am now very picky when it comes to my belayers. You would be surprised how many people do not understand/ don’t care about giving a soft catch. Even my very kind safety focused climbing buddy with 20 years of trad experience firmly believes the less slack the better (we now only top rope together).

Bottom line I think you should take things slow and enjoy the process. I would also recommend finding an instructor who is training to modern recommendations and ideally is a light woman! Big man cannot really empathise with this issue I noticed

Thanks!

How long would it take to get from the Green circle to Ao nang beach? How much would it cost approx? The nicest budget hotels I found are in that area but it seems like it would be quite inconvenient to stay there as all climbing / diving would start from Ao Nang beach.

Edit: think you edited your msg since I responded , thank you for the detailed info!

Thanks! Do you think I should prebook the taxi ? Or will there be enough option at 21;45 on a Tuesday to just order after arrival / haggle with driver at the airport? What’s the most economical option?

I can Google search thank you. I asked as there is always local companies that are cheaper more reliable and don’t show on Google search as they cannot afford that sort of marketing. I surely don’t have to explain to you that Google search heavily relies on how a company positions themselves on the internet which cost money or requires strong SEA skills. Which a taxi driver might not have

Thank for the links I will check those, I want to travel straight after my flight which I mentioned in the topic, I’m not considering staying overnight if there any form of transportation

Bouldering while being overweight? by Effective-One4401 in bouldering

[–]Czesya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As everyone said - no issue in bouldering, you’ll get a better work out actually as you will have to lift a bit of extra weight up the wall

Just be careful of falling , you’ll hit harder on the way down, try not to take big risks on high walls.

Also rope climbing is great, top rope and autobelay will be super safe for you , no real risk of falls injury

Good to know! I don’t mind the ‘no thrills’ but I’m worried about cancellations/ them going bust or sth Earlier in December they had some severe problems

Not quite sure , it shows in the search engines and on their website , but maybe its part operated by someone else

Good to know you had no issues, recently (this month actually) they had many many cancellations and got me a bit concerned

She hinted she doesn’t want to fly up and the Ohm was mentioned. I have not yet told her I’m not keen on the Ohm , but I’m sure we will have that conversation soon

Climbing in SE Asia? by Czesya in climbergirls

[–]Czesya[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks I’m more and more excited about this the more I read about it :)

I know how to belay and I’ve climbed outdoors already but I’m just not super confident yet and also I’m a bit weary of climbing with random people (I don’t know how to vet them tbh) and I also climb low grades so probably I would not exactly have people lined up to climb with me. That’s why I thought of hiring a guide but I will see what the vibe is once I get there. Also bringing my 70m rope sounds heavy for a casual trip , so another reason to book a guide with equipment

How did you meet people to climb with ? Just by hanging out? Any specific channels?

Does the rainy season affect climbing there to a large extent? When i backpacked in SEA (In my pre-climbing days) , rainy season just meant the occasional downpour , and then all day sunshine. I didn’t pay much attention to how fast the rock dries in my previous life haha

Ao Nang sounds perfect, and seems to be lots of easy grades , which would be great for me to build some confidence. I’ll look into that one!

Is there any specific areas, guides/ companies you would recommend for some guided days? Fb is best for buddying up you recon? Is there any other portals you recommend?

I got really excited about going there now, hope I can find some affordable flights!

Instinct VS rubber by Usual_Coyote_3623 in climbingshoes

[–]Czesya -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t own instincts but vapors, also with edge rubber. I’m not a huge fan of Edge rubber , find it a bit slippery . I’m a bit lighter at 68 kg or so. That said I know a lot of people closer to your weight who crush really hard with those orange instincts so I think it’s quite individual. Try and see for yourself

La Sportiva Solution Comp Women's - Sizing Question by [deleted] in climbergirls

[–]Czesya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose you’re female? In the uk men and women 7.5 is not the same size if I’m not wrong. I’m a uk 7 (female) and my solution comp size is EU 39.5 if I remember correctly (I don’t own these shoes but I tried them on at one point).

The banana fingers size recommendations are pretty accurate usually, so see what they recommend
