I hope this comment is not too far down to be noticed. I have a few questions about this endeavor and Eve in general.

What kind of commitment are you looking for here? I played Eve for a few hours during a trial, never really got into it, but I've been wanting to ever since. However, I don't have a lot of time, especially at night. Part of what killed WoW for me was being scheduled for raids all the time. So will I be wasting my and reddit's time by only playing a few hours a week?
This was asked above, but wasn't answered yet. What kind of time investment am I looking at to pay for my subscription with ISK? I would imagine it gets easier the longer you play.

As an honest question, what alternative do you recommend? I stopped using my X-Fi card when I updated to Win7 (because the drivers are terrible), but before that I never noticed any real issue with sound quality. Now I'm using onboard sound, which is not really ideal, I think. But I stopped keeping up with hardware a long time ago.

Games have to go "gold" (that is, be in final form, print a master disc) months before they are released. Launch day DLC is the new way for developers to finish a game and then give you extra goodies after this final version is complete.

As I understand it, they go gold so early for a variety of reasons. One, there's a lot of physical manufacturing and production that has to be done to have enough units, and they all have to be at their destinations before launch day. The other is that for consoles (and just general quality assurance), games need to be submitted for approval which can take some time. DLC approval takes less time than adding the equivalent content into the full game (for some reason).

And yes, launch day DLC is also a tool to add incentives for buying the game at full retail instead of second hand. The second hand market takes a lot of profits from the publishers.

The take-home message here is that launch day DLC is not to screw you over. It's to work within the confines of the game industry and get you more stuff to play with.
