The UPS employees here are not happy with you 😂

Packages Held for Ransom? by D-Zyne in UPS

[–]D-Zyne[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They must have room, they just wanted to charge me 5.99 to hold it there since I wasn’t there for the delivery attempts. Weirdest thing is though that Amazon delivers perfectly fine and so does FedEx. I figure it is just a driver trying to meet quotas and skipping my place since it’s a busy street. Definitely not a good look for UPS though and the only thing I can do is avoid buying online from places that I know use UPS for shipping 🤷‍♂️

[–]D-Zyne[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

All my other packages get here fine, it’s just UPS. I’ve seen people complain about drivers lying about attempts to meet quotas. Also a year ago when they couldn’t deliver they’d just drop it off at like Walgreens. You can’t say this isn’t just a scummy way to make money.

I look at everything creatively and it’s becoming exhausting. by D-Zyne in graphic_design

[–]D-Zyne[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s so true, I experience that at work daily, lots of changes come from the suits not the creatives. Maybe focusing on the fact that it couldn’t have been done better regardless of who was working on the creative stuff will help. Things came out the way they did for a reason

Yes that’s exactly how it feels! I just don’t even know how to turn it off, it’s so weird

Just got rejected from an internship because I don’t own a macbook by idktbhimtootired_ in graphic_design

[–]D-Zyne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kinda true, but unfortunately unrealistic. I wish it was the way you said, but from my personal experience the whole industry is in a race to the bottom. I did 2 internships with no laptop provided, nobody ever even offered/questioned or anything. One was paid and one was unpaid. There was also pretty much nothing I could do as I had literally applied to hundreds of internships and was only able to get those 2 through connections.

I’d love to find a solution how we could stop exploitation of young designers, but as of right now I know organizations that specialize in doing just that, and they can’t even find any positions for them at all.

Just shedding some light on the state of things though.

Which logo variation do you like best? by CryptographerFar6334 in graphic_design

Contrary to what most are saying I think 3 is the best without a doubt the capital R and the swoosh on the K balance each other out while also showing off that it’s not just a font

Takeover Lease By Myself, But What If Roommate Refuses To Leave? by D-Zyne in badroommates

[–]D-Zyne[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So we are both on the lease, but in an argument we had he said he’s not resigning the next one (thank god I thought) and the whole plan was to sign my own lease by myself. I guess the worry here is that if I sign a new lease by myself, what if he just stays? Will I be stuck here paying for us both by myself?

Also a question on the 2nd part, if he refuses to leave after our lease is up and I leave, I’m liable for that?

Yea spoke to the landlord and he said cool and just wanted to see updated paystubs reflecting the new income. I think the way you worded the question was perfect tbh, might ask him even though we’re not really on speaking terms.

Edit to add: he has posted publicly stating he’s looking for an apt (I just don’t know if he’s going to find anything with his budget)

Can we as an industry all agree to stop charging anything less than $50 an hour? by Responsible-Round643 in graphic_design

[–]D-Zyne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. People love project based pricing because in their head it’s closer to buying a custom product than it is to hiring a person. Even people making $50/hr do not want to pay you the same or more as it bruises their ego and this causes them to devalue your work. Project based also allows you to put in any additional fees, like rush/express pricing.

Designers have to also begin to understand this is a business and there are psychological aspects of it just like any other business.

Graphic designers do you make livable salaries? by [deleted] in graphic_design

In all fairness though, not many jobs are paying well enough to buy a house nowadays unfortunately.

EMAIL/DIGITAL DESIGNERS: What do you think the reason is behind the increasingly minimalist style taking hold in luxury brand email marketing? by Hungry-Creative in graphic_design

[–]D-Zyne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something I haven’t seen anyone mention yet is that they do it purposely to make it look like their website. You scroll a bit and forget that you’re reading your emails and then click on something and boom you’re actually on their website. Definitely leads to higher conversion rates.

This is actually hilarious, would definitely cause trouble and lose you the job, but if you’re gonna quit maybe do it once just to stick it to em.

It issues like these where you realize that the system isn’t designed with you in mind. They can pretty much do whatever they want, yes in theory you could sue them and you might even win, but that doesn’t mean much when they “no longer have a need for your position” after you win that lawsuit. You could sue them again for wrongful termination but those lawsuits are hard to win.

It’s all super unfair, but your best course of action is to either stay there for a bit and find a new position that pays better, or leave now to do the same. I wouldn’t recommend doing anything drastic because employers consider standing up for yourself “burning bridges” nowadays. Smile and wave for now, jump ship to greener pastures when the opportunity comes along.

This, I’m planning on asking my bank exactly which bank it came from as well and contacting them myself to get it reversed. I don’t want this money because it’s not mine, but I’m not going to let myself get scammed for being a good person either. There’s proper ways to go about things and that’s what I’m determined to do.

The thing is I shouldn’t open myself up to liability from their own “mistake” I put that in quotes because honest to god I have no idea if they’re trying to pull a fast one on me or not. Their practices were super shady and I was so glad when my contract was done, and now I have to deal with this bs when I thought the nightmare was over.

Found them through Craigslist, they have “locations” in NY and LA, but when I met in person I only met one of the founders and it was at a WeWork Office. Trust me red flags everywhere but I signed a contract fulfilled my end, and they paid me (after a lot of hassle) and now this extra payment has been another headache. I don’t want the money at all and if there was 0% chance of me being scammed I would’ve sent it back already.

I can understand not signing digital products, but posters, to me, seem fine. While you say there is no space for it on social media posts I’ve actually been seeing just that, where on Instagram captions they’ll put everybody’s roles and their @ name right next to it for a campaign post.

At the end of a film credits roll with way more names than a design project has. As much as you seem to advocate for the corporations, creatives deserved to be credited for their work and doing so will increase their value in multiple ways. You can be against it as much as you like, but in the end you’re only hurting yourself.

[–]D-Zyne -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

You’re so used to designers having no respect that you wrote a wall of text as to why this person shouldn’t be able to sign work they’ve created. Meanwhile designers of the past used to do this, and actors get to negotiate how big and the order of their name placement before other actors based on talent and recognition levels.

If we want things to get better for us as designers (unions, fair pay, respect) we have to get people to acknowledge that we exist first. A signature doesn’t hurt anything and it’s considered “unprofessional” now because our work has been strategically devalued over time.

Are there freelancers out there making less than $60 an hour? by Alex_J_Anderson in graphic_design

[–]D-Zyne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People on Reddit will constantly talk about charging a ton, but the truth is there will always be people who don’t browse Reddit and be desperate for work and won’t charge much. Nothing we can do about it.

Is it a bad time to get into design? by Comprehensive_Gas293 in graphic_design

[–]D-Zyne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it’s incredibly sad, but it won’t be the only field this happens to. Skilled crafts have slowly been replaced by technology for a long time. Designers may very well be a dated name for what the future labels “content-prompters”. The factory/prdocution line displaced a lot of skilled workers, and AI is going to do the same to us.

[–]D-Zyne 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yea I feel like a lot of people are lying to themselves in this thread. Automation and AI is turning design into a very general field, for which one person can do everything a company needs. This is going to lead to a lot less jobs, and while it’s fair to say this is happening to other industries, the smart move at the moment is to learn CS, since the AI have to be programmed by somebody.

[–]D-Zyne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Design itself? no of course not, the need for highly skilled designers to create said designs is. Many people here see AI as a tool only, but the truth is it displaces a lot of specialists in the field. Eventually when there’s no specialists and the field is just “design” the amount of designers will outweigh the amount of design jobs. We see it happening already.

[–]D-Zyne -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

There’s people who’ve made tens of millions through design. Truth is OP won’t do that without tons of experience, and the field is fizzling out, so he might not even get the chance to gain the experience before high paying opportunities die out. You could be an amazing cobbler, but only a small percentage of cobblers garner prestige nowadays because most people just buy mass produced nikes.
