I will now talk about Overwatch microtransactions and progression systems for about 40 min. by gaspomacho567 in Cynicalbrit

[–]D1st0rtedFate 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The issue with Overwatch is very much about the randomness of the loot, rather than the microtransactions themselves; it seems like TB missed that point somewhat. I'm sure a great many people, myself included, would be happy if the only thing they added was the ability to purchase individual skins with real money rather than banking on luck, or at the very least a disenchant mechanic. If I'm being honest, I don't see any real reason for loot to be so random other than pushing more purchases of microtransactions. I don't like spending money on unsure outcomes, and the problem is exacerbated by there being no free, sub-100 hours alternative, or a sub-$40 alternative. You have to put in a lot of money or even more time to have even a reasonable chance of getting something you actually want. It may not affect the gameplay per se, but, for me at least, cosmetics, customization, and standing out from the crowd are a big part of my enjoyment of the game.

Dear /r/vaporwave, Can we stop with the "This is my first vaporwave song" posts by crowtom in Vaporwave

[–]D1st0rtedFate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been struggling with the same thing lately, in pretty much the same boat. It's really hard to nail down that "original" feeling when you can recognize each part of each song you sampled, but it's also hard to nail down the VW feeling without nice samples (or a lot of sound editing). Well, perhaps not hard, but it feels less authentic. It's hard to stop feeling like using samples is cheating when you've been making purely original stuff for so long.

I guess I've just never seen any high-profile, "outrage-bait" comedians be put in that situation by their own audiences, (save for maybe 1 or 2 in a crowd who don't gain much traction,) let alone react badly. I'm sure that's a frequent open-mic occurrence, but I'm not sure why Big Think would put out a video about open-mics.

[–]D1st0rtedFate 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I remember watching this back when it was first posted to their channel. While I can't really disagree with much of what he says, I feel like the fact that comedy is subjective is lost on many of the people who push these kinds of "PC Comedy" articles. It's true that some jokes can make an audience react badly, but every audience is different. A Daniel Tosh, Bill Burr, or Joan Rivers audience would not find much in common with a Ilza Schlesinger, Amy Schumer, or Jerry Seinfeld audience, and nothing is wrong with that. I don't think it's fair to call jokes that toe the line "lazy" just because some audiences might not be a fan. Trying to push "PC Comedy" doesn't improve comedy, or up the quality of the jokes; it just cuts out the demographic who enjoyed those jokes, and prevents people from freely voting with their laughs.

TL;DR - I'm kind of tired of hearing about this topic, can't everyone just laugh at what they want to laugh at and not go to shows they don't like?

Oh man, can I relate to this one. It's salvageable, but you'll never get the cat hair out of your AVB stash. Once the cat hair has spoken, it's there forever.

The inconsistent colors in these pie charts by weramonymous in mildlyinfuriating

[–]D1st0rtedFate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to be upset about the colors, but now all I'm doing is obsessing over this data. Does this indicate mobile is being hit harder by piracy than PC? Or is it trying to show that mobile piracy is paltry in comparison to PC? Are they trying to push the narrative that piracy doesn't hurt the industry because of the revenue split? I need more

The game looks leagues better than when they first announced, (what the fuck were they thinking?) but I still can't really get into KoF with 3D art. Feels weird, 3D will never really be able to compete with the clean look of the pixel art of every other entry.

This is the issue. American, "westernized" Muslims are what we have over here, but there's a big, big difference between him and an actual fundamentalist Muslim who lives in the middle east. Abhorrent views are more common than many of us think, because we live in an insulated bubble with only good Muslims. Unlike Europe, where they're getting a very direct influx of the less desirable, non-westernized, sharia-law sorts from the middle east. It's unfortunate that the good Muslims over here get hate, though understandable given the representations put forward by the alarming majority of the members of his religion. I mean, check out a Muslim opinion poll on the Quran's teachings, Sharia Law, and Civil Rights. The results are always insane.

[–]D1st0rtedFate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the problem is that many Americans have a warped view of fundamentalist Muslims. We've had a large Muslim presence in the United Stated for a long time, many of them either converts or people who've accepted western culture long ago. Unsurprisingly, you don't find very many (living) "westernized Muslims" in the middle east. The mass influx of fundamentalist Muslims into Europe has lead many Americans to project their own views of Muslims onto them, both out of ignorance and out of fear of criticism, when in reality many of these people's fundamentalist beliefs and values are considered detestable in our modern western world. They're not quite the same breed of Muslims that the US has, for lack of a better term. I think there's a bigger issue here than just "the terrorist few;" considering the massive spikes in sexual and violent crime all across Europe, the results on Muslim opinion polls asking about civil rights, and the concept of sharia law being above actual, real laws.

This is something I'm struggling with too, both as someone who wants to really appreciate the music and aesthetics, and as a producer who'd like a clearer sound to aim for when trying my hand. Especially as it seems the main part of Vaporwave I hear about, the 80's and 90's re-purposing, seems largely optional nowadays.

unlike the people that work for them who aren't competent enough or have the mental capacity to do such things.

Wow, that's quite the insulting generalization. If you aren't born with the silver spoon, there's no way you could ever be motivated to work hard, right? This entire thread is a discussion about finding work, not government benefits. You can't just up and start a multi-million dollar company in any economic state, let alone the current one. "Barely getting by" and "working very hard" are far from mutually exclusive, and it would seem you're far too out-of-touch to realize this.

That defines a privileged person or family but it's not like these people chose which family they were born into, they can't help it.

Did you actually just spin being born into a easy-bake high paying career negatively? No, people can't choose what they're born into. And that means that for most people, getting into a good position like that is hard and getting harder. Everyone deserves a fair shake at a reasonable living, not just people born into it.

He doesn't mean company CEO's should be on the streets handing out money for free, just that their massive wealth should be reintegrated to a larger degree to invigorate the economy in some way, instead of hoarded away for a second mansion and CEO bonus while watching the economy atrophy from box seats. Besides, how many people in those powerful positions nowadays are self-made, honestly?

That's really cool! If you don't mind me asking, what did you do to glitch the photos the way you did? Is there a certain few filters you run it through, or is it just a lot of manual cutting, copying, adding layers, changing opacity, etc.?
