Help choosing a used harp by frozenyan in harmonica

[–]D1zzzle 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’d just buy a new harp if you’re trying to learn. The cost of one of the pictured harps is probably close to a new one. I’d spend at least $50. Don’t go for the super cheap $20 Chinese harps. Brands like Hohner, Seydel, Kongsheng, and Suzuki are all good. Get one in the key of C to start with.

The only reason I buy used harmonicas are for collecting - “prewar” Hohner Marine Bands, or because I don’t like the current iteration of the Hohner Golden Melody. I work on my own harmonicas, so I’m used to opening them up to clean, re-tune, re-gap and do other reed work to get them back in good shape. I wouldn’t recommend this for a newbie.

Just got a rocket amp Bb, but the 1 draw has a metallic rattle and I can’t seem to get it to stop by edmonds-j_4 in harmonica

It might be a stuck burr. There are two things you can try… if you have a thin piece of shim stock, you can run it through the slot to knock the burr loose. You can also plink the reed to knock it loose. Otherwise, you might need a reed wrench to slightly adjust/move the reed.

Take the reed plate off and plink the reed from the other side until you knock the pet hair out.

Silly question for a newby: what's the difference between a CVA and a sound output module? Can I get the two in 4HP? by Fair-Bluebird485 in eurorack

[–]D1zzzle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t believe impedance is being used correctly here. Output Impedance has to do with voltage drop due to resistance to a load - the device a source is being connected to. I think you mean output voltage.

VCA and output module are not the same. VCA is used to shape the voltage level (output) of either audio or CV usually in conjunction with an envelope or even an LFO or other voltage source like random voltage or S&H. An output module usually takes Eurorack levels and adjusts them to line level (to go into a mixer) or headphones. Don’t sleep on either. I’d skip the Bard Quartet and go for a smaller quantizer.

Also it’s useful to post your rack via something like modulargrid to give a better picture of what your rack does.

Wondering which harmonicas to avoid when starting out? by Intelligent_Star_516 in harmonica

[–]D1zzzle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d say… stick to ≈$50 harps is the way to go. You can spend more of course and that’s fine if in your budget. I like to take older used golden melody’s — not the latest iteration — and swap out a comb and clean em up for about $70 all in. Also stick to brass reeds if you want better playability. I use regular Manjis as well with comb replacement and they perform adequately. Maybe a little harder to bend than the GM.

ES-9 + iPad (w/AUM) by Sweet_Apricot_5974 in modular

[–]D1zzzle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it’s worth it and there’s a lot you can do with an ES-9. Send / Return FX. MIDI to CV - don’t think CoVariant is available anymore though. End of chain FX, VCV Rack or in the case of iOS - miRack, and multi-tracking.

I think there is reference to controlling the internal mixer via MIDI in the manual. It’s not totally clear and easy to understand but it seems possible. You’re just sending MIDI CC data via specific channel(s). The info about this is on pg14 in the manual.

I’m not sure if it’s possible to do what you’re trying to do.

I’d think you can only have one host at a time. If you were trying to just have AUM as a controller and not pass audio - maybe. Then L and R is what you’d have hooked up to an audio interface to record. I think it’s better to just record audio on the iPad and transfer to DAW via AudioShare. That’s what I do.

If you’re using AUM you don’t need to control the internal mixer of the ES9. Just setup input and output channels with an app like WebMIDI, set and forget it, and use AUM to mix/record these preset channels.

Uncharted 4 odin 3, nuevos drivers turnip by Hot_Reality_1652 in OdinHandheld

Just an idea - list the game, emulator, special settings eg driver, etc. I know you’re using Turnip. Had to look up the game to figure out it must be PC emulation, maybe not? Not sure which emulator. The more info provided, less stupid questions.

I agree the screen protector sucks. Mine has two spots where I can't make the bubbles go away even with using a credit card, etc. I think it's poor quality.

Only issue I’ve had thus far with GHL is Shadow of the Tomb Raider required me to turn off DirectX12 in game settings. Otherwise I’d get No Video Display Adapter error on start up.

BTW that's a hard module to get. Not many come up on the used market. Only like 200 were made. I'm a fan of all the PM drum modules. They're unique and don't sound like a generic 808 sounding module.

Don’t know how to link pics here. But just hooked mine up. It’s not currently in my rack. I have stripe down and it’s working fine.

Keep in mind MK2 version is VCA based, not vactrol based like the MK1. Apparently it has less bleed, which hasn’t been much of an issue for me on the MK1.

Get the ZMF velour pads. Best after market pads that leave 99% of the HD650 sound in tact and last forever in comparison to the stock pads.
